Title: Federer vs Almagro

chetanpv - May 8, 2007 11:28 AM (GMT)
Does anyone else feel that Federer is the underdog on this one? It wont be surprising if the Spaniard wins the match.

You must like Federer, you regularly start his live scoring threads. :)

No. I feel like Federer is the favorite, and yet Almagro is very good on clay, so I would say it would be only mildly surprising if the Spaniard wins.

:D

On a serious note, I'm looking forward to this match up...I think it'll be a tough-ish one, as Almagro is pretty impressive on clay, but I am still going for a Fed victory.

BTW, I have just updated the Live Scores link above so that it points to the current week's scoreboard. :)

trisco - May 8, 2007 01:23 PM (GMT)
players are on court now...
I wouldn't be surprised if Fed lost this but if he is playing his A-B game he should win ok.

Tenez - May 8, 2007 01:34 PM (GMT)
There was a very clear case of the innacuracy of hawkeye. The ball on the floor showed 10mm out while HE showed it touched.

I knew it was not reliable.

Nick Havoc - May 8, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
Maybe just wishful thinking on our part, chet, thinking Fed would be the underdog. He's not playing as such so far. Fed takes the first set 6-3 and opens the second set by breaking Almagro for a 1-0 lead.

Tennisveritas - May 8, 2007 02:20 PM (GMT)

3-2 in the second..Let's hope he will close in two..Simply to demo to all trolls and related   that the No#2 on clay is Mr. FED and no other ones :D ...

When as a No#1 we have the Monster (i.e. in term of Tennis greatness Mr. Rafa)...Full stop.. :D :D

barrystar - May 8, 2007 02:42 PM (GMT)
Fed wins 6-3, 6-4

Another disappointing result for the arrogant swiss roflmao

Mathemagician - May 8, 2007 02:42 PM (GMT)
Well that straight sets victory for Federer came as no surprise....

:P :P Done in straight sets..ans now as usual we expect to see the usual boring comments:

A. Almagro was injured :( ...No one noticed but the trolls yes..
B. FED had a lot of chances..Concerning what we do not know given that he had to save only one break point in the entire match. :( ..
C. Almagro choked and Papi and papa...Blabli blabla......

A+ B + C just boring :( ....Anyway some are happy with that. :( ...

On my side:  :yahoo: Congrat FED   to keep your nerves even if the pressure was very high (I guess) and let's move on to the next match..YESSS..I want the final against Rafa... :ok: :ok: .

TV I am always impressed by your tennis knowledge but you do let yourself get wound up by the non-Fed fans!

Celebrate Feds victory and ignore the negative Fed comments and you will feel much better dude!

....and of course.... Well done Fed! That was a relatively tough first round opponent considering his morale on clay at the moment after having been beaten by Nadal twice recently (albeit one being the battle of the surface exhibition....)

TV replies are always worth reading. They are part of the fun. I actually enjoy reading Chet and co negative comments/humour on Fed too as long as they stay in homeopathic doses on this board.

Agree with you Gav but..this time I need a " Rant over. " type of posts. B) ..I am a little bit nervous lately because I really do not see the point of talking about FED as being in the downside of his career when since the beginning of the year he had already won a slam :) and it is 18 - 3 (3 loss against two players)..And he has still the chance to win a GS. :P .

Come on...I am just tired on that..But now, rant over and let's wait for the next match.  .

Gav - May 8, 2007 03:19 PM (GMT)
Fair enough TV. We all need to rant sometimes!

And yes Tenez, I agree Chet and Co's comments are very funny indeed in the doses seen on this board.

yorkshire - May 8, 2007 03:30 PM (GMT)
A double bagel for the Fedster :D

petalp - May 8, 2007 05:44 PM (GMT)
Good win for Fed.. serving a chilling warning to the rest of the field, perhaps?

Amalgro is a very good clay court player and gave Fed a tough match on clay last year, so he had to be on his guard for this one.

A Rafa-Fed final again please.. oh, and yes, a 5-setter too please.. B)

Frankly, on this surface I would be happier with a one-sided 3 sets to love win for Fed. Kind of making the FO final a bit more hopeful.

ok then Tenez.. straight set win for Fed it is..

If not straight sets then a win for Fed in 5 would be great.. well, a first win for fed against Rafa on clay would be :yahoo: any which way it came!

Nick Havoc - May 8, 2007 06:54 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I'd like to see Fed win one against Nadal on clay, too. He should have done it last year in Rome.

I was trying to think, for the sake of the ubiquitous Fed v. Sampras debate, if there was any kind of equivalent rivalry to Sampras, but I guess not. First, there was really no clay court master equivalent to Nadal at that time, and second, Sampras never consistently made it deep enough into the clay tournaments to meet the top players. There were a number of good clay courters, like Bruguera, Muster, Courier . . . , but none that owned the surface the way Nadal does.

Tenez - May 8, 2007 10:32 PM (GMT)
Pete had a tough challenge when Chang came along. He lead Sampras 5/0 in their H2H before Sampras eventually caught up.

Yeah, but they didn't meet much on clay.

Even if I will be the first to appreciate a five sets final at Rome it will just be impossible ..The final will be a best of three..So let's hope something like the semi in Shanghai...It was difficult but FED was able to handle Rafa..For me this will be already a great result for sure...

BTW: we are still far away from that result...FED is likely to meet Gasquet...And Richard :P is a very good player who seems finally playing at his best on clay at the moment..

And Rafa from the other side he can meet Dijoko  and Canas (hopefully) and Canas is Canas, i.e. I do not give you a penny for free roflmao ..

I have rarely seen someone that unlucky.

I don't think a young gun has met Federer as often as Gasquet. Poor guy. Last sunday, he lost 7 set points (it is partly his fault but surely also bad luck!) and now has Fed in his draw.
