Title: Tim's last year

WimbledonAce - May 7, 2007 08:04 PM (GMT)
Not sure what everyone else thinks on this but I'm becoming increasingly convinced that this will be Tim's last year on the tour. With another baby on the way and his tennis results lacking I really feel he is biding his time for the big farewell at Wimbledon. I for one will not be surprised if he says his goodbyes to the crowd this year - I just really hope he does not go out with a whimper in round one. Anyone else have the same thoughts? :(

I agree :( You never know though, if he has some good results at the remaining slams he might give it another go next year. At least nobody can question HIS dedication to the sport that made him

Certainly not he has been a fantastic ambassador for the sport, you could not fault his work ethic, effort, loyalty or dedication. I just feel it's time to call it a day, sad as I am. I shall have tissues on standby for Wimbers just in case.

I agree WA - I cant help but feel he might say his final goodbyes come this Wimbers - its got to be playing on his mind constantly as he struggles at these tourneys. Not sure how he would view DC though - having just come back, but he might do the next one and call it all quits.

I will be gutted to see him go. He's worked so hard, put up with so much crap in the newspapers and from the two week tennis fans who know it all come Wimbledon time... he deserves a big fanfare and to go out on a high - when he does decide to do it, I hope thats exactly what he gets.

I think he'll go out at this years Wimbledon, and I think it will be the perfect stage for his finale.

I hope he has a good run at SW19, he certainly deserves it. As you say, the stick he's had to put up with from media half wits and "fans" who believe Wimbledon is the only tennis tournament played is incredible. I got a huge amount of abuse on another board for saying he was an incredibly high achiever and that Murray had some way to go before emulating his successes!

He'll be missed, it's a shame that his serve never matched up 100% to that sublime volley, as I think he'd have had a couple of Wimbledon cups to show for it.

Agreed. I think Henman will get the reception he deserves when he calls it a day - the British media have got Murray to build up then knock down now, so there shouldn't be too much vitriol. No doubt there'll be the odd piece of garbage about his failure to win Wimbledon, but his record there is up there with some of the greatest players of all time. And if he's fully fit (questionable, sadly), I still don't see too many players being able to prevent the Tiger having a pretty satisfactory swansong down London way this year :)

About time we agreed on something today ;) Murray has the makings of a good player, but 6 Grand Slam finals is a formidable target. Sadly some of his critics may only realise just how good Henman was when his supposed successor struggles to emulate his achievements.

Hands up who thinks he will ask Murray to partner him in the doubles?

that's the problem WA, the brits never realise how good their own folks are, the media is too busy slagging them off.

Heaven forbid when Lewis Hamilton* finishes outside the top 3 - he'll be a has been before he's finished his first season!

*Lewis Hamilton is in his first season in Formula 1. He is the first ever rookie to have finished on the podium in his first 3 F1 races and is being hailed as a world champion in waiting...

he's given a lot to tennis, but i think it's time for tim to call it a day.

I think possibly for singles, but I'm sure Tim has a lot to give to the doubles game

Only Tim will know when it is time for him to retire and it saddens me to see so much of the media and people who were once for him now demanding he retire because he is not winning like he used to.

I personally believe Tim still has a couple/three years left in him imo. He still has the potential to beat world class players and I think Tim is a world class player myself, even if his ranking doesn't reflect it now. For ten years, Henman has carried the weight of British expectations, put up with crap from the media and people and still produces sublime tennis.
I don't understand people when they say he's failed. How has he failed?
He has been a world of good for British tennis and British sport in general and has produced some amazing results in the Grand Slams.

Yes he may have yet to win a Slam but I really think he may do it in his final years. And I think that would mean more to him. So you go Tim!!
