Title: Outrage
liam_valid - May 7, 2007 04:53 PM (GMT)
Clijsters said this in an interview:
| QUOTE |
"Time to marry," she told her website. "Time for children? Time for cooking and playing with my dogs. And particularly a lot of time with my friends and family.
"No more travelling. No more stepping in and out of planes. No more having to read gossip or lies in the papers."
|
Now Mary Pierce knows she is past her best, she knows it will be an uphill struggle to get back into the top 20 IF, she can get herself fit enough to even return, which she has committed herself to doing even though she too has a fiance and possible marriage, because she loves the sport and the fans that have made her life so successful. Kim Clijsters, the tour is better off without you. Good Riddance

You mean..... you don't like Kim? :o
In all seriousness though, fair play to her. There are certainly more things to life than tennis and it's her decision. Yes other players are more dedicated to the sport for sure. She just wants other things in life.

i actually used to like her, but she has oppotunities in life that most people in the world can only dream of, and it incenses me that she isnt taking them. Its not like her biological clock is ticking just yet

This is real outrage from Peter Bodo.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?...530&name=tennisClijsters calls it quits ... finally!

It was a great weekend it was for the warrior athletes. Pete Sampras played an authentic, prize-money tournament for the first time since he won the U.S. Open of 2002 (thereby establishing a new Grand Slam singles title record of 14), and he looked a lot like the Pistol Pete of yore. Roger Clemens, at age 44, decided to give it another go, the Yankee re-incarnate.
And then there was the buzz kill: 23-year-old One-Slam Wonder Kim Clijsters called it quits. And not a moment too soon, if you ask me. Clijsters announcement -- delivered to her legions of Kool-Aid slurping fans via her Web site -- is reason for rejoicing. Let the news ring out across the land, we are free of Kimmy at last!
Just think: no more having to watch Kimmy gag away big matches, or Get Small on occasions when a quality player is supposed to Go Big. No more of that anodyne, one-speed baseline game (she should have been sponsored by John Deere; watching her play was about as jump-to-your feet exciting as a tractor pull). No more Kimmy, bashing tennis and moaning about how tough it is to be a lavishly compensated, globe-trotting pro tennis star. And last but not least, no more of her endless prattle about that danged wedding.
Note No. 1 to Kimmy: Women like Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Chris Evert wanted to have children (and did) and experience "regular" life every bit as much as you do. They had the grace, tact and humility to take care of their tennis business and then move on, although Cawley liked the game so much she came back and won Wimbledon as a mom.
Here's what I don't get. Everyone talks about how "nice" this girl is, but who cares about nice in a chronic underachiever and whiner? Her recent pronouncements have alternated between childish and haughty, with a soupcon of bitter thrown in. Excerpt, from her online diary: "Time to marry. Time for children? Time for cooking and playing with my dogs. And particularly a lot of time with my friends and family … No more travelling. No more stepping in and out of planes. No more having to read gossip or lies in the papers."
Note No. 2 to Kimmy: See the bit about Cawley in Note No. 1. Also, your parents were all over the tour for a while there, and Ivan Lendl raised and bred German shepherds while he was happily getting to eight U.S. Open finals -- in a row. And speaking of family and gossip, wasn't it your own father, legendary Belgian soccer star Leo Clijsters, who rocked the tennis world by suggesting to Belgian reporters that Justine Henin was juiced out of her gourd that year she hammered you for the U.S. Open title?
The really weird thing is, I always thought it was supposed to be fun getting married. Bye, Kimmy, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Is dl's first name Peter by any chance? roflmao
Im only joking ;)
I happen to think that is a disgraceful article myself, what a bitch the author is  , why doesn't he just go to one of Elton's parties if he wants to have such a rant, but don't subject the loyal customers of ESPN to such judgemental drivel!

Im sorry, but i think the atricle is spot on. You have the likes od Dementieva and Venus who love the sport and are battling injury and confidence issues to get back into the top ten, which is occupied by someone who cant wait to get out of it. Her fall from the top 100 cant come quick enough for me, and i think she deserves every bitchy article she gets

maybe, but his points are quite correct, and if Kim doesnt like reading gossip, she probably wont this anyway

She doesn't owe us anything, good luck to her.
Was there all this hassle when Hingis originally "retired"?
Gav - May 7, 2007 06:20 PM (GMT)
Liam, do you have the same issue with Borg?
What about McEnroe who took a hiatus from the game and then came back but was never as good?

Well I don't think anyone deserves to be spoken of like that, after all they've done for a sport. And Kim has had more injuries than most, Venus and Serena have had more, true. But the article moans about how she's a chronic underachiever (- yeah cos that's not an exaggeration or anything) and whiner, which is simply factually untrue (one of many flaws in the article) and good riddance etc. Well she's retiring now because her heart obviously isn't in it anymore, which has been made obvious by her recent underachieving and "gagging" (eloquently put) away matches. So what's there to moan about now? Is this person moaning because they're happy she's leaving or because he wants her to stay when she blatantly doesn't want it anymore?
All in all seems a pretty pointless piece or journalism and in essence little more than a childish rant imo.

No because we dont really give a crap about her.

i wasnt a fan when they retired so know little about the circumstances. I dont feel any of Kims injuries are as bad as Hingis' ankle either, she seems pretty fit to me when playing. So i can only deduct that she just cant be bothered with the tour anymore. She could always have taken time out for the wedding, or waited til the off season, and then announced her retirement when she fell pregnant. All i can deduce is that she cant be arsed anymore, and i find that quite irritating,

Fair enough, but the way I see it is that she wants to concentrate on her marriage without having to fly off for tournaments here and there. Then she wants concentrate on babies and her private life, again without flying off here and there playing tournaments. I don't think it is about being arsed, but more of a case of what is now important to her now. And to be honest, who can blame her for wanting normal things in life without having to have them revolve around tennis. Just because she has great skills at a sport doesn't mean she has to fit the rest of her life around it.
That's my way of seeing it anyway and I do respect you see it differently Liam.
BIG-TODGER - May 7, 2007 08:15 PM (GMT)
The article was bitchy and derogatory towards Kim-and why? because she has the audacity to quite a sport while quite young.
For gods sake, she's leaving the sport, not planning to join a death cult.
Part of me thinks yeah she could have achieved a lot more in the sport, and it's sad she wont be around to fulfil her potential (oh and i think she should have left a while back, as her heart wasn't in it) But if you're heart isn't in something, and you have a choice you leave!

that article was garbage. just let kim retire already. but i am glad we don't have to endure her swansong anymore. nobody likes a prolonged good-bye.
