What have you had your tooth filled with, MN?
If it's amalgam then that is considered by dentists as the best chance for saving a tooth.
If it's resin/ white filling then that might not be doing its job.
If it's gold then you're obviously well off and are going for the bling/ gangsta/ pimp look! that is meant to be pretty good too.
The question is how big is the filling?
You seem too young to have to have a tooth out. If:
a. It's not that big a filling
b. It's a silver/ amalgam one
Then I would suggest getting it redone as it may have not been done properly. There may be some problem with the root, might need cleaning up. Hopefully not root canal treatment though.
As Pebs mentioned, SB knows a lot about this.. but I would say that you should return to your dentist and ask for it to be redone.
I had a proble with a filling 2 years ago, and had it redone 3 times with different types of filling. It's fine now (touch wood!)

MN, definitely get yourself to your dentist.
The dentist's priority will be saving the tooth. The fact that you've had toothache doesn't necessarily mean that it will have to come out..

Had a similar problem a couple of years ago where they filled it and it kept giving my real bad pains. In the end I asked them to just take it out (it was right at the back and at the bottom, one of the molars).
They took it out, I felt nothing after the injection. Apprently they got the top half of the tooth and not the roots as they were stuck, but they said that wouldn't matter, and have had no problems since.
Pulling a tooth out doesn't hurt, it takes no time and then you are pain free. Until then best advice I can give is get some ibuprofen in you. That worked for me.

Gav - May 8, 2007 08:22 AM (GMT)
Yup, I agree with Lex.
As you say MN, you seem to be suffering with a very similar problem as me from a few years back. The pain will come and go, the only way I got rid of it was to have the thing pulled out. Having a tooth pulled out sounds painful, but it isn't. It's quick, painless and your done and out of there with a smile on your face....well on one side of your face....the other side will be a bit numb from the injection (which again is painless)...

Poor MN. :( Toothache is a killer. Sorry I wasnt; here to help, I would have been your expert. I had tooth problems for over a year because no bugger woudl treat me as I was nervous and allergic to lignacaine. To cut the long story short, I was referred to an NHS specialist, waited over a year by which time my teeth got so bad that I needed loads of work. I had root canal treatmetn x 4, noen fo which worked and it is so painful. In the end I had them out cos I had had enough. Then by the tiem that was through all the simple fillings I needed turned otu to eb mor ecomplicated and I lost them. They coudl nto work on me fast enough and things got worse. In the end I had eleven teeth out over 3 months, inc a wisdom tooth. :yikes: Tbh it was a relief. They discovered I had an underlying problem with my jaw joint and that may have made things worse in terms of pain but it's too late now. Luckily I have nto lost any frotn teeth so you can't tell. I was gonna ahave implants but with my jaw joint they said nto a good idea so that is that. I still get pain even though my teeth are fine, it's all the treatments - fillings, wrenching extractions (one took nearly two hours) and drilling. Hat dentists, but I am no longer phobic! roflmao

So far (touch wood) I have been undeservedly lucky with my teeth. I went to the dentist when I was at school aged 17. The next time I went was last summer when I was 36. The dentist told me I could wait another 20 years before coming back!
Apparently a big part of the reason for my luck is that my teeth are spread out with large gaps between them (including the front two) so nasty stuff doesn't hang around in my mouth caught between my teeth and give them trouble (I have never flossed my teeth).
I will have a battle with mrs. star if the starlet has similar gaps between his teeth, because she will want to 'fix' them and I will want them left alone....

Lucky you, hope it continues :)
You are right, the gaps mean that food doesnt; get in there and decay is easier to spot and remove. Mine were quite close together and I couldn't even tell if there was decay in some until the x-rays were done. Interestign that you have hardly seen a dentist and are OK. Me and my bessie mate have both had a lot done form a young age, and I dont; think that helped us. When we were kids they seemed to fill everything. Then the filling needs replacing, it gets bigger, you end up with root fillings and crowns. Once they go wrong you end up without teeth. Of the ones I had out, 2 had been root filled and crowned and coudl tno be replaced once the crown broke down. One was just a crown, and it never respeonded to root filling and had to go. The rest already had huge fillings in them, some were root filled to save them but it never worked and others were just too awkward to refill. I tried bu they never settled down. Best nto touch your teeth unless you have to I say. :ok:

Therein lies a truth about all things medical I'd say - although it is equally true (sadly) that there are plenty of things that go wrong which do need intervention.
It is an obvious, but nonetheless important, distinction that, in many instances, it's not the treatment that cures or heals you, but your own body aided by what the treatment can do.

Yep, I had a kneee op cos I had to, serious injury when I did the splits unwittingly! roflmao Thing is it solved one problem, but created another - my hamstring gets really tight and the other leg is looser, so it has cuased an imbalance. My rheumtolgist said he'd avoid surgery because it can't be corrected easily and the damage is done.
With teeth it's funny because you can't heal them once they are damaged. Every treatment you have involves removing more of the tooth, and it eventually weakens. Crowns can crack and leak and cause more decay without you knowing until it is too late, as I discovered. I only realised a problem when the gold stuff came off! :yikes:

Well that's true to an extent, but this is an area where generalisations often disprove themselves if you don't build in a careful qualification.
It is some people's mistaken trust in their own willpower, or phlegmatism, that results in small problems that require quick but minor intervention becoming big problems. Perhaps the classic example is moving (walking) in a way that compensates for some niggling back (or other) pain and before you know where you are you have worn out the part of your body that was doing the compensating.
EDIT: to digress, Bob Paisley, manager of Liverpool, was a trained physiotherapist and he was renown for spotting early signs of injury when one of his players was ever-so-slightly compensating or limping. That was reputed to be one of the reasons why he was so frequently able to play very few players over a season - injuries that started small were nipped in the bud early.

Fair enough, but even then you have to be careful. Some people don't like their struggle with illness to be described in moral tones, such as "courageous" as they feel it adds to the pressure and can create unwanted baggage.
