Title: Federer's clay weakness with Nadal - the forehand?

Selesdavcaprisharaserenafan - May 1, 2007 08:47 AM (GMT)
A lot has been said about the fact that, on clay, Rafa kills Roger with corss-court forehands to Roger's backhand, which is the percieved weakness.

To be honest though, the wing that always seems to me to cause Fed the biggest problems is his forehand. Obviously the ball spinning up high on your forehand wing is not an easy shot, but to me he seems to have more problems being aggressive with his forehand than with the backhand. The errors come from the forehand largely it seems when you watch them play.

We know how good Roger's forehand is usually, and is a major contributor to how he poleaxes virtually everyone else on tour. But against Rafa it always looks wobbly, and may well be a big reason as to why he struggles to "get at" Rafa. He has broken the shackles off at times, such as the first set of last years FO, but generally I reckon there's a mental block going on. What does everyone else think?

I had never distinguished it as a problem apart from the recent Monte-Carlo final where it was admittedly 'off'.

To be honest Monte Carlo was not the first time it's happened - both times theyve met in the french open that problem has occured.

The backhand thing has been overplayed IMO
