Title: New Game
liam_valid - April 25, 2007 04:42 PM (GMT)
Seeing as all is quiet on the tennis front this week, lets start a new game.
I will start by asking a tennis question. The first person to get it right then asks 2 questions. The poster to correctly answer those then asks 3 etc. By the time we get to 10, one of the Williams might be playing a tourny somewhere
OK my question......
When, and where, did Navratilova first beat Evert in a GS singles final?
SerenaW19 - April 25, 2007 05:24 PM (GMT)
It was in 1978 Wimbledon Final. Martina's first Grand Slam :)

 well done, you ask 2 qs now SW....
SerenaW19 - April 25, 2007 05:36 PM (GMT)
Ok :D btw I didn't look that up. So if others try to do these without looking them up
Who did Serena beat in the Indian Wells Final in 1999?
and
What unusual event occurred in Mixed Doubles in 1998?
liam_valid - April 25, 2007 05:50 PM (GMT)
I know Serena beat Graf in that final, and im pretty sure it was the only time Steffi made the final at Indian Wells, and never actually won the title. Havent a clue on the second one though. Was it a brother/sister final?
SerenaW19 - April 25, 2007 05:54 PM (GMT)
Ok I'll give you a hint. The answer involves both Venus and Serena :D

they both won a GS with the same partner?
SerenaW19 - April 25, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
Nope, one final clue, both Serena and Venus won all their MD Grand Slams in 1998....

with american partners? so all winners were american? roflmao
SerenaW19 - April 25, 2007 06:04 PM (GMT)
Interesting ideas Liam, but you're going down the wrong route
Venus won the FO and AO with Gimbelstof and Serena won Wimbledon and USO with Myrni.
They did the MD Sister Slam :D

roflmao good question :D
heres a good one...
What is unusual about Mary Pierce coming from Canada?
SerenaW19 - April 25, 2007 06:11 PM (GMT)
The fact that she's French? roflmao

Well yeah roflmao but most sources claim she is Canadian by birth, and she was born there, but her pregnant mum was only there on a trip when she unexpectedly gave birth. So in my eyes, you can hardly say she is Canadian by any stretch of the imagination
SerenaW19 - April 25, 2007 06:24 PM (GMT)
Yeah that has been some controversy over Mary's nationality over the years hasn't there?
Ok I'll ask a couple more, then you can ask 3 if you like :D
Who did Mary Pierce lose to in the first Grand Slam Final she got to?
Apart from 3 FO Finals, what is the only other Grand Slam Final Chris Evert beat Navratilova on?
liam_valid - April 25, 2007 06:30 PM (GMT)

lol that was my hero ASV at RG '94  i remember that so well because Mary stuffed Steffi in the semis, and because i was never a fan of Steffi, i instantly became a fan of Mary with such a convincing win  the other, i would guess at USO
SerenaW19 - April 25, 2007 06:45 PM (GMT)
What about the second one? :)
It's funny how we all have our heroes in tennis :D
liam_valid - April 26, 2007 05:52 PM (GMT)
Heres some more then as im bored at work :P
1. When did Fred Perry turn pro?
2. When did Annabel Croft become Junior Wimbledon champ?
3. Who coached Mary Pierce when she split from her father in 1993?
SerenaW19 - April 26, 2007 06:08 PM (GMT)
I don't know any of them roflmao

SerenaW19 - April 26, 2007 06:32 PM (GMT)
It's AO, you were close though so I'll let you have it. Funnily enough they never played that many USO Finals.
Ok I'll guess
1929 for Fred Perry
1993 For Annabel Croft
Bolletiri for Mary Pierce

Correct :) Annabel was junior wimbledon champion in 1984. Still too early with Fred though, he turned pro in 1937, despite spending the previous 3 years at number 1 as an amatuer. your turn, as i dont think anyone else is gonna play  roflmao

O crap I see with Fred now, I was thinking of turning pro in terms of players today i.e. like at 16. I wasn't thinking about turning pro after already having a career as an amateur
Anyway here's my four, I am off to do some revision now so will tell you if you got them right later :D

SerenaW19 - April 26, 2007 07:58 PM (GMT)
Correct for Justine, Fed lost in the 1st round French Open 2003 :P
Actually Id forgotten about Lenglen, she won 5 FO's in a row. Chris won four and had a winning streak of 28 matches there. Chris definitely owns the open era record though. I will try and find out about Lenglen to see if her streak is longer :ok:

Lenglen won 5 in a row but her winning streak isn't as good at only 22 matches.
The draws were smaller in those days and players had 1st round byes until the 80's so no great surprise her streak is smaller.
She served about 12 double bagels in those 22 matches though roflmao

1. How many times did ASV beat Steffi in a GS singles final?
2. Who was the youngest player to compete in, and win, a fed cup match?
3. Recently discovered Asteroid 128036 is named after which male tennis player?
4. Where was Connors first and last GS singles titles?
5. Why did Agassi boycott Wimbledon 1988-1990?
Nick Havoc - April 27, 2007 04:32 PM (GMT)
5. Because he was a temperamental teenager and didn't like the thrashing he had taken in 1987. (But he blamed it on the dress code.)

correct :D what about the others?
Nick Havoc - April 27, 2007 06:41 PM (GMT)
I don't know the others, but something tells me the asteroid might be named after the player in your sig . . .?
Was No. 2 Capriati?
And I'm pretty sure Connors' last GS title was at the USO. Not sure about the first, though (except that it was definitely not RG ;) ).

Yes, Nadal has had an asteroid named after him  (beat that Fed :P )
Connors final GS was at USO (his first at AO)

Capriati wasn't a bad guess, though, as she competed in 1990 at the age of 14 and not only won all of her matches that year, but the US won the Fed Cup title, as well.

But according to the Fed Cup site, this young Greek girl was the youngest to compete, and she won her first match.
In fact, looking at Anna's record, I think she was a few months older when she first played Fed Cup than Capriati was, as well . . .
