Nick Havoc - April 25, 2007 06:20 PM (GMT)
Well, the Americans bow out today, with Chela beating Spadea and Ferrer edging out Goldstein . . .
Manzikert - April 25, 2007 08:32 PM (GMT)
Yes, the Ferrer v Goldstein match looks like a few points having gone the other way could have turned it all around for the American. B)
The Ferrero retirement is disappointing considering the good form he demonstrated in Monte Carlo, although it does pave the way for Caņas (who can actually be considered a favourite against the unconvincing-of-late Davydenko). A very nice result for Johansson, who overcame his dangerous compatriot Soderling in two comfortable tiebreakers; perhaps the latter is still being haunted by his collapse against Berdych last week, but the former AO champion (who at 32 is quite the veteran) looks to be recording some encouraging wins again in the closing phase of his career, such as the notable win against Nalbandian in Davis Cup.
Of course he faces Nadal next, so his Barcelona run is almost certain to end shortly. Then it is yet another Chela encounter which is looming for the Spaniard, who dispatched Vliegen in nearly the same manner as he did last week. Again, I'd like to see a Nadal v Nalbandian SF for a first-time meeting, but the Argentine is again likely not to keep his end of the bargain especially with in-form home favourite and former champion Moya up next for him, and the formidable Ferrer next if he does manage to get past.

Perhaps you're being sarcastic here, but his last tournament involved wins against Gasquet, Federer, Robredo and Ljubicic to reach the MIami final. In what way was that an 'easy ride'?
Not to mention that on current form he was well capable of making Davydenko his what, sixth or seventh Top 10 win this year? The Russian struggled to edge a qualifier in three sets this week, and it seems now that an injury had been nagging him.
