BBC Report

Clay king Rafael Nadal won the Monte Carlo Masters title for the third straight year by beating top seed and big rival Roger Federer in the final.
The Spaniard won 6-4 6-4 to register his 67th straight victory on clay and make it five wins out of five against Federer on that surface.

Nadal, who broke once in each set, fended off three break points in the first set but faced none thereafter.

Federer has now lost in three events in a row for the first time since 2003.

It is 20-year-old Nadal's eighth Masters Series title and he has not been beaten on clay since April 2005.

He beat Federer last year in the Monte Carlo Masters, the Rome Masters and the French Open finals.

The left-handed Spaniard, who did not drop a set in the tournament, is the first man since Ilie Nastase (1971-1973) to win the Monte Carlo title for the third year in a row.

"It is an honour to be up against Federer here in Monte Carlo and to win for the third time," Nadal admitted after the win.

Federer made 38 unforced errors - half on his forehand - and Nadal won on his second match point when Federer sent a backhand long.

"Congratulations to Rafa," said the world number one. "What he has achieved is fantastic.

"I will try again to beat him in Rome, Hamburg and here in Monte Carlo next year."

Wasn't it his third match point? (Second on his own serve.) BBC reporting.

didnt it have the old 'so and so CRUSHED so and so' headline too? I thought I was going to read a Henman match report at first....

Agreed re: BBC reporting. I detest all that 'CRUSHED' baloney  The beeb had Jelena Jankovic beating the wrong Williams last week   Really don't think that any of the sports writers there are into tennis that much tbh.

Great pics Trisco!! :ok:

Both players look good, but I don't like Fed's shirt, I have to confess..

I saw the wrong Williams sister - utterly ridiculous!

Also, ditto the "crushing"...surely the Beeb can put a little more effort into these match reports!? I am sure there are several people - including myself - who would like such a role!!

Well done Rafa - I am pleased he won; but by no means think that Fed is going to roll over for the rest of the cc. Just Arnie...he'll be back (with a vengeance!)

:D

I think he's missed one tournament from this list..

Yeah. I noticed that. Maybe he's planning to skip RG.

Or perhaps he's confident he will win RG this year, and there'll be no "try" about it.

SaraLess - April 23, 2007 02:52 PM (GMT)
Maybe it's a superstition... like mentioning Macbeth if you're an actor...Fed clearly doesn't want to incur any bad luck by mentioning that GS

:D

From now on, just as Macbeth is referred to as 'the Scottish play', Fed will either not name RG or refer to it as 'the Slam without a name'
