Dark_Necrofear - April 20, 2007 12:48 PM (GMT)
About to begin and they have the toss going...

Dark_Necrofear - April 20, 2007 12:49 PM (GMT)
Carlos Bernadez is the umpire here...Ferrero pulling that long hair look...in other news Berdych beat Soderling and the mouth watering prospect of a Nadal Berdych match is tickling my tastebuds!

Dark_Necrofear - April 20, 2007 12:51 PM (GMT)
Well Ferrero has had quite an easy path through and he dismantled Henman 7-5 6-2 and then the other 2 in straights as well!

Dark_Necrofear - April 20, 2007 12:54 PM (GMT)
Gasquet has seemingly hadd a tougher week.2 three set humdingers..He is toast for sure!

Wise_Analyst - April 20, 2007 12:55 PM (GMT)
Sorry Dark, didn't notice you'd already started this one. Should be a good match, but Federer will certainly be cheering for the Spaniard.

Dark_Necrofear - April 20, 2007 12:57 PM (GMT)
Its cool Wise...but be it known that I do the live scoring the best ;)

Yep! Could be a chance for Nadal to even out that head-to-head a little bit. Kohlschreiber is not bad on clay, but I certainly don't expect him to upset Nadal here.

Manzikert - April 20, 2007 01:02 PM (GMT)
A break from leading 40-15. Not the best start for Gasquet.

Ferrero serving at 1-0.

Dark_Necrofear - April 20, 2007 01:03 PM (GMT)
I seem to be well ahead of you Manzikert....

Tenez - April 20, 2007 01:13 PM (GMT)
Gasquet is tired. He is trying to shorten rallies a bit too much.

Poor gasquet, he looks like me after 6 pints and a couple of puffs.

Dark_Necrofear - April 20, 2007 01:19 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately guys,my coverage ends.We have switched to the cricket world Cup now!

Wise_Analyst - April 20, 2007 01:20 PM (GMT)
Gasquet breaks back B)2

chairman - April 20, 2007 01:20 PM (GMT)
Well gasquet has just broken back so 3 - 3 on serve

Manzikert - April 20, 2007 01:21 PM (GMT)
Gasquet is starting to find some rhythm on his shots now, and it serves him in good stead to break to 30. Back on serve 3-all.

Manzikert - April 20, 2007 01:23 PM (GMT)
A confident hold to love for 4-3, and there is some spring in Gasquet's step now.

Tenez - April 20, 2007 01:24 PM (GMT)
If Gasquet had a bigger serve (maybe he will get one), he woudl be without a doubt a top 5 player.

Wise_Analyst - April 20, 2007 01:24 PM (GMT)
Gasquet enjoying a little purple patch here, as he saunters to hold serve and leads 4-3.

He did look a bit tired earlier though, I'd suggest he needs to win this one in straight sets. Unfortunately given his progress so far this tournament, that seems unlikely.

chairman - April 20, 2007 01:30 PM (GMT)
Is it me or is there a 9 year old line man behind Gasquet?

Manzikert - April 20, 2007 01:31 PM (GMT)
Gutsy hold from Ferrero, fending off a break point and then closing it out with the help of some missed shots from Gasquet. 4-all.

Wise_Analyst - April 20, 2007 01:35 PM (GMT)
One thing I've noticed about Gasquet this tournament is, he seems to be able to hold serve with few problems after a game where he's had chances to break serve but failed. Especially at the business end of the set. He does so again and leads 5-4.

Mo aka Mz O'Hara - April 20, 2007 01:35 PM (GMT)
'Gasquet battling' Nope sorry that does not compute  AndI am a fan of his :)

mightyjeditribble - April 20, 2007 01:45 PM (GMT)

Gasquet takes the set.

vivahate - April 20, 2007 01:45 PM (GMT)

sorry ferrero, but i'd prefer the frenchman to pull this one out.

Manzikert - April 20, 2007 01:47 PM (GMT)
Gasquet does well to avoid the tiebreaker (he's certainly played some poor ones of late) and steps up his return game at the right time, pulling the set out from under Ferrero 7-5 with a break to 30.

Let's see if he manages to close it out in straights, as he should have done against Ljubicic yesterday. He's swinging confidently now.

Manzikert - April 20, 2007 01:51 PM (GMT)
What a crafty forehand round-the-post winner into the corner! His backhand is firing well also, and with another winner into the corner now from that wing, Gasquet digs out of 15-30 to start the second set 1-0.

Manzikert - April 20, 2007 01:55 PM (GMT)
Sigh. This is why there should be Hawkeye on clay courts. Checking the mark is such an inexact science, and on inspection the umpire calls a ball good when replay shows it to have gone wide. It would have been 15-30 for Gasquet, and the Frenchman even temperamentally rubs out the mark with his foot, but he manages to force deuce anyway.

Manzikert - April 20, 2007 02:02 PM (GMT)
Gasquet has another skirmish with the umpire, this time on a Ferrero ace he feels should have been called a let. He seems to go off the rails momentarily, finding himself rapidly at 0-30 on his own serve, but he steadies the ship and holds for 2-1, fending off a break point in the process.

Unfortunately he has called for the trainer at the change of ends. Probably a recurrence of the shoulder issue he had earlier in the week in the Hrbaty match.

mightyjeditribble - April 20, 2007 02:09 PM (GMT)
 Gasquet breaks!

Tennisveritas - April 20, 2007 02:11 PM (GMT)
:yikes: 3-1 Gasquet in the second.. :yikes:

I was not expecting that to be honest...But Richard has the game   Congrat to him if he will be able to close from now on

Manzikert - April 20, 2007 02:11 PM (GMT)
I wasn't paying attention, but Gasquet doesn't seem to have actually received treatment, just having a terse discussion with the trainer. There is also a shot of Federer of all people in the stands, apparently doing some scouting for himself in place of Roche. Even more intriguing is that he is shown in animated conversation with a non-Mirka blonde at the time.

At any rate his play doesn't seem imperilled when the players step back on court, and with some pressure applied with his steady backhand, Gasquet breaks to 30 to lead 3-1 in the second. The finish line is in sight, perhaps, but it's still far from assured
