Title: Gasquet's Interview

Seemed like the interviewer was really taking it to him:
| QUOTE |
Q. On the matchpoints, couldn't you have taken more initiative? RICHARD GASQUET: I didn't miss. He was the one playing on the lines. He really can regret that game at 2 Love. It was good for me.
Q. When you see him playing one then two then three incredible shots, don't you start thinking you should take more risks? RICHARD GASQUET: I wasn't expecting him to play those forehands all over the place. Congratulations to him. I can try to be more aggressive, but what I did was to play deep shots and waiting for the short one to come. It was him who was playing well. As I said, I didn't expect such forehands. I really served very bad. It was a very bad match service wise. I had lost my rhythm, and on top of it he's a lefty so the zones are different. The only thing I can regret is my serve, not the rest.
Q. You often play long matches like against Youzhny and this one. RICHARD GASQUET: Yes. Five hours and three hours.
Q. Can't you take more initiatives, or do you prefer to play the same game as today with more security? RICHARD GASQUET: I try to play deep and to hit the ball early. But he has an exceptional forehand. It's very difficult to hit the ball high on the bounce.
Q. You have difficulties playing against injured players apparently. First Youzhny and now Verdasco, who had problems with his abdominals. RICHARD GASQUET: It's hell. They become euphoric and they come up with unbelievable shots. But I had no choice today. I had to fight back. He came up with exceptional shots. It was not easy. |

I think he was trying to say that Gasquet should take more initiative, but I'm not sure.

In fact I followed the match in the corner of my screen and I must say that Gasquet played those MPs pretty well. Recent;y I criticised him for rushing his break points as he did against Canas in IW. This time he played long and patiently trying to find a better opportunity to attack but Vedasco played out of his depth on some of those MPs so it was a bit unfortunate for Gasquet in my view.
Anyway, I undersood the humour/purpose of your post but just wanted to clarify one point here.

Actually, I didn't see any of the match, so the real purpose of my thread was to get some opinions from those who may have seen it on whether Gasquet really was playing overly defensive or if the interviewer was being a bit too hard on him.
So, thanks for your perspective. :ok:

Q. What do you want to work on in your game?
RICHARD GASQUET: I should hit the ball earlier and serve better. I have a lot of room for improvement. I can serve better, go more to the net, take more risks.
Exactly! It is good to see he is well aware of his weaknesses. He shoudl take more time serving. If you look at Lubo, Fed and other great servers they pause longly before loading and between serves as well. That also enables more recuperation.
Gasquet serves as if he was just throwing the ball in play and his serve is not that bad still.
