Title: Serena vs. Venus

Federer-Williams - April 15, 2007 12:19 PM (GMT)
I just wanted to see how other people compare their games. I think it is key to remember that they have very different games as sometimes they are grouped as a pair.

H2H is tied at 7-7 though it is important to remember Serena leads 5-1 in Grandslam finals.

My interpretation is that Serena generally has more of the 'killer instinct', finishing off points earlier but being prepared to try different strategies when required. Venus has more of a flowing game that is penetrating but often patient.

Serena I think shows her fight all the time whilst Venus shows her emotions less and less seemingly.

Currently:

Forehand - Serena is seemingly more secure technically here. This may be because of Venus's height and arm length but S forehand doesn't break down.

Backhand - Venus may have an edge here but not much. Both have brilliant backhands though.

Serve - Serena's motion is much more secure whilst Venus is struggling with her second serve and DF's. Serena's serve is more varied.

Volleys - Venus has superb volleys and of course reach though recently Serena has improved hers.

Movement - Venus has better movement at the moment and even when they were at their peak probably had the edge in this department.

Mentally - Serena shows her emotions much more whilst Venus stay's calm but sometimes Venus's passiveness doesn't show enough fight.

I think Venus is struggling with consistency at the moment on serve and groundstrokes compared to her prime years. Her forehand didn't break so much. I'm not criticising her, she has had a relatively good comeback so far but whilst Serena is showing glimpses of her 02 form Venus isn't looking quite where she was from 00-02.

i think your analysis of the two players in terms of their respective games is spot on. One thing i have noticed when they've played each other is Serena's tendency to go for winners and finish points off far more than Venus. It's almost as if Venus plays cautiously against her sister-i mean that in relative terms, win or lose Serena is the one who dictates more, and Venus cautiously stays in the rally.
i think the major difference is the serve. As you say Serena's is far more straightforward and reliable, much more fluid. Venus's height and length of limb seem to make her serve look clumsy, at her best Serena is the best female server ever. i'ld say Davernport was more consistent, for the span of her career, but with serena the pace and capacity to exert it well in given situations is much better.

Yeah Id say I agree with all of this - although I wouldn't say their games were very different though. They're certainly not a Navratilova/Evert Graf/Seles difference in styles.
