Title: Greg Retires
WimbledonAce - April 7, 2007 03:06 PM (GMT)
After hitting the winning shot in the GB-Holland Davis Cup tie Greg Rusedski has just announced his retirement from the sport. A fitting way to finish I think, was good for him to go out on a high. Goodbye Greg we will miss you, thanks for all you have done for British tennis. :ok:

I cringed when i saw him announce it!
But ah well congrats to the guy for a long and prosperous career! :ok:

Agreed, it was a fitting way for him to go out - a volleyed winner to be precise. Rusedski's career was clearly on the wane, so it's nice that he'll now be remembered for bowing out as an integral part of the British Davis Cup team's victory, as opposed to losing to sme journeyman in a Satellite. Let's not forget that Rusedski's huge game enabled him to scale the ranking heights of world number 4 in the 90s during the Era of Lions. He also reached the US Open final in 1997, losing a tight 4 setter to Pat Rafter.
Let's hope the rest of his life is as successful as his tennis career  (hard to imagine otherwise, looking at his wife  )

as a henman fan, greg has always been a bogeyman for me, lurking in the background and threatening to overshadow tim.
as such, i've never been a big fan of his. tim is far and away the better tennis player imo.
but i have to give credit to greg. he was a good bogeyman. his accomplishments are many. he won more titles than tim and did something that henman has never done: he contested a grandslam final.
and although i never really warmed to him i have to say i was genuinely touched by the way he went out today. it really is the end of an era.
btw it would be nice if he could have waited until after the playoff match in september, lol.
oh well, best of luck greg, you had a really good career. all the best, mate.

It's good he goes out on with a win.
i think his best moment must be beating Sampras in the master's cup (or super 9 i think it was then) in paris, or his us open final of course.
A serve and volleyer but didn't have a pretty game, but it usually did the job.

I will second all this - Flame and I always shared similar views about grinning Greg!
And whilst I was never a fan, apart from when he played Tim, I did wish him well and I think its a very fitting end to his career - he wanted to go out on a winner and this was the time to do it.
Well done to him.

I didn't think anyone really cared about Rudseski anyway.
Anyway, have a good retirement, and it was a good way to go out indeed. best of luck for the future :ok:

Speak for yourself.
I used to think he was an interesting antidote to middle England Henman. Even though his achievements are greater than Henman, he was always fairly underrated/unmentioned in the British media (probably because he was not born in this country, even though he is half British).
At his best, his serve was a dangerous weapon against anyone.

cheers to greg on his retirement. it was due...traitor :P :P
Dark_Necrofear - April 10, 2007 08:20 AM (GMT)
He was clearly overdue....His serve and volley game that made tennis look like something else just wasnt pleasant on the eye. However it worked for him and he was great for Great Britain even though he was Canadian....
Lesson to be learnt here, emigrate to a country that lacks tennis stars and become their tennis number 1.Does wonders for the ego.... ;) roflmao
Good luck to Greg and the rest of his life...May it be just as prosperous as his Tennis career!

He'll probably be remembered for his infamous outburst at Wimbledon more than his tennis though.
