Title: Where will Serena's winning streak end?
SerenaW19 - April 4, 2007 05:00 PM (GMT)
Now, Serena has had surprise defeats on clay even when she was number one, she lost to Amelie in Charleston in 2003, Patty  there in 2002; even losing to Justine in Berlin 2002 was a bit of a shock. That match made me  actually as she should've won it. So it's quite possible her winning streak could end at any of these events.
However, something feels different to previous years, I think Serena is more hungry to win now than ever, she hasn't really played properly on clay since 2004, so will be all the hungrier for that I feel. She is also aware that she needs to get a good seeding for the FO. Im sure she's also aware that she has only ever won 2 tournaments on clay, one of which was the French Open, so she will want to get some more good matches on it.
From my point of view, I think she'll win Charleston, perhaps pull out of Berlin and play Rome. If she only plays those, she won't have to face Justine in either (unless Justine decides to enter Rome), so won't have to face her again until the FO.
In terms of Serena beating Justine on clay; would it be better that she played her in one of the warm up tournies and lost, before taking a good crack at her at the FO? I don't know, but that odds are they won't meet until the Open anyway.
I don't know if she'll win it, but I think Serena should be the favourite for Charleston anyway :)
OOPS!!!
I forgot to add the option that she won't lose at all! Im not so sure about that though, if she is going to be beaten or suffer an upset, then it's going to be on clay.

why did you put french open to henin, rather than just french open?
that changes my mind now. see i don't think she'll play again until the french open, but i don't think she'll go out against henin at the french open.

If she continues her form i don't think she will loose for a while!
But if she was going to loose it will most likely be against Mauresmo or Henin! But in my opinion i think she will win everything including the French open!
And then Venus will win Wimbledon! :P

With Henin gone she's now the favourite for Charleston though it remains a tough draw and she's definitely more vulnerable on clay so i'd expect people like Peer to give her more problems then they could at Miami.
She is down to play Berlin and if she does appear then I reckon that's where the streak will end - Justine has a supreme record here (3 titles, 1 final, 1 semi & has only lost one complete match since she had to retire in the 2001 against Capriati) and she'll be fired up after letting things slip against Serena in Miami.

She won't play before the FO roflmao She's not stupid Obliv, she hasn't played the event since 2004 and she's not going to go into it with zero match practice and a seeding of 12
I put Justine at the FO as she is the only person entering it that is capable of beating Serena at Grand Slam level given her current form, and considering she always plays her best tennis at Grand Slams.
If Kim was in the draw then I would give her a shout, if Capriati was, obviously her also. But as it is Justine and Serena will be the only two French Open Champions in the draw, and at this early stage of the clay season, they would both have to be the two outstanding favourites for it.

I am certainly not worried about her streak ending.... I would preferrably want to see her playing equally well on clay.... it is certainly a more demanding surface... It doesn't really matter who she loses to ...Justin Petrova kuznetsova.....
Her style of play is not really suited for the red surface.....Heck kim clijsters will probably beat her simply by choosing to run around more and do more splits whiles she's at it.. I just want her to edge up the rankings table.
But, on clay....shot making sense is quite important..and since that aspect of her game has improved... I will be watching to see how she executes this on the clay surface......
Does anyone agree with me that she is looking increasingly fit.... or am I deluding myself.....
SerenaW19 - April 5, 2007 10:18 AM (GMT)
She is looking increasingly fit, yes. Her shot making is as brilliant as ever and her movement seems to be improving all the time.
I look forward to seeing her sliding on clay :D At peak capacity she's the best mover on the surface along with Venus and Justine :)

To be frank, I was sick of Serena fans yapping all the time, I am quite happy she lost. No one wants women tennis to get as sickening as men, there is not much skill there already then imagine the competitive part getting lost.

Ah the irony of being a prophetic avatar, ones words are out there in cyberspace.
I tend to agree on the whole, Serena does look very hungry now, whether the injury was to avoid her sister or not, i reckon it's merely a glitch in what will be world domination this year. Serena has that look in the eyes again, actually it's the same look a cereal killer has before their victim meets his maker...so i'm told.
