Title: Petrova for Wimbledon
liam_valid - March 28, 2007 08:35 PM (GMT)
Many questions have been asked about whether Petrova can win a GS title. I believe and hope she can. Watching her game this season, i even think she is going to be a force at Wimbledon this year with her aggresive style. She even serve volleyed a full couple of games against Momo recently :P Whats more evident however, is her increased mental aproach. Against Justine last night she was a different player. Yeah she lost in 2 tight sets, but Henin would have won much more easily against the Petrova of old. She even smiled a few times when she missed easy balls rather than her negative attitutde we are used too. Go Nadia :yahoo:
vivahate - March 28, 2007 09:49 PM (GMT)
she clearly has the talent, she just needs to put it together in her head and know that she can win. that would be nice to see...with added confidence can come a more loose and relaxed style of play. things will start to make sense for petrova.
jack.hl.ng - March 28, 2007 10:05 PM (GMT)
i think Petrova definately has talent but whether enough to a GS im not sure... i think on the tour right now, there are just so many players who are in the same league as her, and some alot better than her...
the new serena williams we are seeing, has raised her game so much, i dont think even serena believes how well she is playing...
it would be very hard for petrova to fight off players like serena, clijsters and henin, and take a GS.. personally i cant see it happening... i can only see Henin, Williams, Sharapova and maybe Clijsters (just because its her final year) to take the GS' this year.... :(
having said that though... ive never had much interest in Petrova as a player, and think she is a *bit* too highly rated for me...

ive always been the same, but this year her attitude and attacking play has really impressed me, im really starting to warm towards her :)
Awesome_Agassi - March 29, 2007 09:07 AM (GMT)
The French Open represents her best and possibly only chance of grand slam success. Last year she racked up the titles on clay, and had an impressive victory over Henin in the final at Berlin, before she picked up an injury at Rome that hampered her chances at the French. I believe she has reached 2 semi-finals at Roland Garros in the past. Henin of course is the top dog on clay but if she faulters then Petrova has as much chance as anyone else of capitalising.

Agree with OBLIVION......She is mentaly weak and is a top 10 pretender...Though I enjoy when she plays Henin coz she gives her a hard time!
barrystar - March 30, 2007 03:01 PM (GMT)
I prefer slam winners to have that certain something about them to make them a bit interesting (whether on or off the Court, and I don't have to like them either) - IMHO Petrova is seriously lacking in any such qualities.
She's clearly a very good player, but to me she's good for making up the numbers in the top 10 or providing cannon fodder in the QF or SF (no mean feat, I accept) but not a slam winner, please......

well put
Yeah Petrova, lacks something... she is a "great top ten pretender"
I can see her out of it very soon...
doing some figures, she has 2135 points. she has 3 tournaments coming up as defending champion: Amelia Island, Charleston and Berlin.
According to WTA, she is playing Amelia Island, and not for Charleston (Berlin nothing released yet)
By not playing Charleston, she risks 300 ranking points. Meaning she will have 1835 points, down to a current rank 8.
She has to defend 195 at Amelia Island, and 300 at Berlin. To be honest, i can only see her going to the QF's or is she is *very lucky* SF, meaning she will lose more ranking points.
I can see her having about 1600 and under points after Berlin, putting her at about rank 12ish...
After scores have been calculated from the Miami tournament, we shall have about no 10. 1700 points to rank 18 (Li Na) 1500.
This means doing well in *any* tournament from there on, any one can climb huge ranking places.
Top Ten, i can really see Li Na (not just because she is my faourite, but because she is a decent player), Shahar Peer, Anna Chakvetadze and Serena Williams back in.
I can see Schnyder, Safina, Dementieva, Petrova, making up the rest of the Top 15/20.
GS2 - March 30, 2007 03:45 PM (GMT)
Petrova has a lot to defend in the clay season that's true but remember she went out first round of RG with injury didn't play on grass & barely won a match over the US Hardcourt season so even if she does fall out of the top 10 in the next month or so she will have a long stretch where she can only gain points and should make it back in.
jack.hl.ng - March 30, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
yeah... :(
she didnt play from like early june till aug. so yeah can make up alot of points then :(
well hopefully some new players will get a taste of top ten, before petrova reenters :P
vivahate - March 31, 2007 09:29 AM (GMT)
maybe nadia needs a mauresmo-type renaissance where she sheds the shackles of under-achiever/choker and breaks through. if not this year, then when??
SerenaW19 - March 31, 2007 11:53 AM (GMT)
I do like Nadia, quite like game as well. She will be in the top ten for a while :D
laurie - March 31, 2007 12:29 PM (GMT)
I have the opposing feeling. Traditionally (and in modern times) shotmakers and instinctive players win Wimbledon - That's true in both mens and womens events. Nadia is not a shotmaker which is why she has her best results on clay. There she has more time to set up her shots. I view her as a deliberate player not an inspirational player who can come up with magical volleys or winners from anywhere on the court when her opponent is not expecting them.
Since 2000 Venus, Serena, Maria Sharapova and Amelie have won Wimbledon - all shotmakers. Amelie is not as strong as the others off the ground but makes up for that with incredible athletic ability and fantastic volleying - a modern Jana Novotna with a topspin backhand.
Nadia doesn't fall into any of those categories. French open is her best chance but even in Paris there will be dangerous shotmakers lurking like Vaidisova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anna Ivanovic, Venus and Serena, Dementieva if she's fit and even players like Jankovic and Amelie, Justine will be favourite. Plus Nadia has never beaten Anna Chakvetadze, a kind of female Santoro.
It will be very tough for Nadia.

Yes i agree, but Nadia has recently become one of the few women that can serve volley under pressure and win games with it. Add that to her prowess at the back, and with a little confidence boost, i think she will make her slam breakthrough

Sorry to disagree Liam, but i cant say Nadia is the example of serve-volleying under pressure. I cant even recall seeing Nadia serve-volley

Thats what i mean, its only a recent thing, she must have been working on it during the off season. It was especially prominent when she won Paris this year, using it to great effect against Momo in the semi. She only seems to play it when feeling confident though, which happens about 2 tournies a year  I feel if she gets herself together in that department, and i feel she is making great progress there, she has the game to win a slam
Russiafan - May 7, 2007 09:50 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure if Nadia can win Wimbledon but her game suggests she can go further than she has in the past. She has a big serve, is a good volleyer and solid groundstrokes.
liam_valid - May 7, 2007 10:46 PM (GMT)
mark my words, the confidence she gets from winning RG will take her to the wimbledon title :)
vivahate - May 7, 2007 10:58 PM (GMT)
liam, aren't you kind of cheating with nadia while mary's away?? :P
clearly nadia has the talent. she needs to go into RG with some but not a lot of expectation. maybe then she can relax a little and play her game. i'm not suggesting half-assed efforts at berlin or rome. but she clearly has a problem living up to expectation.

I don't think Petrova will win a grand slam to be honest, unless the draw collapses in front of her. There are players on the tour better than her at what she does.
