Title: Murray vs Roddick

liam_valid - March 28, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)
I would like to see either player progress, so not too bothered about the outcome, but i think Roddick will, although i also predict it will be their first match to go the distance

liam_valid - March 28, 2007 06:41 PM (GMT)
players will be on court any time now. Is it on sky? i cant find it in the listings

Pebs - March 28, 2007 06:42 PM (GMT)
c'mooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnn Murray!!!!

jack.hl.ng - March 28, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
yeah i think it will be their first 3 setter...
not minding who to win... but would like the person who wins this match to win Miami! :D

Wise_Analyst - March 28, 2007 07:02 PM (GMT)
Players out on court. Roddick won the toss and elected to serve first.

I'd give Murray the edge here; Miami's quite a slow hard court and negates Roddick's weapons somewhat. Could well be another case of Murray winning 'ugly', Brad Gilbert style. Definitely want him to win; I don't dislike Roddick but he's very limited and can never challenge consistently at the very top of the game.

liam_valid - March 28, 2007 07:08 PM (GMT)
first game to Murray, although Roddick should hopeful that Murray only managed 2 first serves in out of 5

liam_valid - March 28, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
Roddick survives a bp. 1-1

Wise_Analyst - March 28, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
Murray gets a break point at 30-40, which he should probably have won, but Roddick ended up saving it with a smart volley. He earns another break point, but Roddick thwarts him with some good serving. 1-1.

Dinky Jo - March 28, 2007 07:16 PM (GMT)
come on Murray

Manzikert - March 28, 2007 07:17 PM (GMT)
Both players have come out of the blocks looking very sharp indeed, which bodes well for the quality of at least the first set. Each also did well to dig themselves out of trouble on their service games with confident holds.

Murray leads 2-1 on serve in the first.

Gav - March 28, 2007 07:19 PM (GMT)
Yeah Come on Mr. Murray!!!!

Gav - March 28, 2007 07:20 PM (GMT)
2-2 at the mo.... no breaks

Manzikert - March 28, 2007 07:21 PM (GMT)
Murray is making some good shot selection but coming up slightly short in the execution, giving Roddick an easy hold to love.

Important hold coming up I think.

Wise_Analyst - March 28, 2007 07:24 PM (GMT)
Roddick holds very convincingly - will Murray regret not breaking him in the first game? Incidentally, apologies for claiming Roddick was serving first... they look kinda similar in all white with caps

Murray holds equally easily. Both players looking solid so far, looks like it could be a good match. 3-2 Murray.

Manzikert - March 28, 2007 07:25 PM (GMT)
Murray is definitely looking to be aggressive out there, and it seems to be paying off on his service games. A couple of nice winners from various parts of the court and he holds to go up 3-2.

Scotsguy - March 28, 2007 07:29 PM (GMT)
COME ON MURRAY!!!!!!

Hope I didn't hurt your ears there....

Nick Havoc - March 28, 2007 07:30 PM (GMT)
Go Andy!!!!

(Roddick) B)

Wise_Analyst - March 28, 2007 07:31 PM (GMT)
Roddick's getting into a nice service groove. He waltzes to 3-3 with a quickfire hold to love, courtesy of some big serves and forehands.

Murray's also serving well - his first serve percentage probably isn't quite as poor as it often is. That is, until he double faults at 30-15, but he holds to 30 nicely enough.

Roddick looking a bit uncomfortable all of a sudden, and is predicted to call the trainer on during this change of ends.

Manzikert - March 28, 2007 07:31 PM (GMT)
Roddick has been moving strangely for a few points and has summoned the trainer at the change of ends. Sigh. Just when the match was shaping up to be a good one.

SaraLess - March 28, 2007 07:34 PM (GMT)
Solid serve so far from both players, Murray usual counterpunch self finding angles mixing up with some nice backhand slices which Roddick finds difficult to hit his big heavy topspins with...

Both players trying to utlilise their net play nicely at any given opportunity.

C'mon Roddick, win this one!

Scotsguy - March 28, 2007 07:35 PM (GMT)
If Murray can't pull this one out the bag then I hope Roddick wins Miami-but for now my support is firmly with Andy M....

Scotsguy - March 28, 2007 07:36 PM (GMT)
Thans for keeping us folks without sky updated, tis much appreciated.. :D

Wise_Analyst - March 28, 2007 07:38 PM (GMT)
Roddick's got a problem with his left hamstring I think... definitely some kind of twinge / strain on his left leg. He's fine to continue, but it remains to be seen how much of an impact it has on him.

How was the pie Sara? I had to cook it solo last night, since chet was absent - hope it lived up to your standards. Still, as a Fed fan your standards obviously aren't too high... :P

drakey01 - March 28, 2007 07:40 PM (GMT)
Surely the top half of the draw would be far less dull if Fed were still in it though?

Anyway, another break point chance for Murray, and a second serve so a good chance...

Murray breaks!

Dinky Jo - March 28, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
:yahoo: Go Murray!!!! :yahoo:

Scotsguy - March 28, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
Murray wins by retirement

I was hoping for a good match.....

Manzikert - March 28, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
It's all over. Roddick and Murray just shook hands at the net. I suppose the American wants to avoid turning the injury into a serious one by playing a match with it.

Hugely disappointing, especially after such high quality in the first six games.

Dinky Jo - March 28, 2007 07:43 PM (GMT)
what, what, what, what????

those people watching, how injured did Roddick look? what had he injured????

Manzikert - March 28, 2007 07:44 PM (GMT)
Roddick pulled a hamstring in the midst of retrieving a ball, apparently. I suppose with a tough Davis Cup encounter with Spain looming he decided to play it safe.

His movement was a bit suspect at first, but with each point it was clearly affecting him more. I haven't felt this gobsmacked and disappointed by a retirement since Nalbandian pulled out of the RG semi against Federer. Heh.

oh well, at least Murray got through, even if it wasn't in the way I would have liked :(

I was hoping Roddick would finish this off. He's retired. Now we have to rely on Senor Nadal to make this tournament have a happy ending.

Pie was consumed, Wise...though, I am still optimistic enough to think that will be the last piece for the rest of the season!! :D And orders of words will be back on the menu with a vengeance.

Wise_Analyst - March 28, 2007 07:49 PM (GMT)
On a more positive note, Murray will be fully fit to take on Nadal (preferably), and going by their AO match, that should be a cracker :D

Roddick had something wrong with his left leg, at the top. I'm guessing a hamstring, or possibly hip or buttock strain given by how he pulled up after a fairly routine lunge for a volley. The commentators seemed to think it was definitely the right choice.

Oh and Sara - I'll cook smaller portions during the clay season. Don't want to be responsible for your weight ballooning!

drakey01 - March 28, 2007 07:51 PM (GMT)
Shame about the way it went, but great to see Murray in another masters semi final, hopefully he can go one step further this time, but I'd be surprised if he gets past Nadal or Djokovic. He put in a great performance against Nadal at the AO, and whilst best of 3 sets should help Murray's chances, Nadal seems a different player than the one Murray nearly beat in Australia.

Gav - March 28, 2007 07:54 PM (GMT)
Real shame it ended like that. Now I have to focus my attention on listening to England drawing with Andorra (yes the mighty Andorra) after 45 minutes!!

learn to cook vegetarian pie too Wise....... :P or i'll have to miss out on all of this pie eating

Manzikert - March 28, 2007 07:54 PM (GMT)
I was slightly favouring Murray for the win, so I suppose there's that to take away.

Roddick was in no danger when he called the trainer, with no service breaks as yet, so at least there's none of the usual unsavoury questions of gamesmanship or purposely ending the match to avoid a loss. (The service break only came because he just couldn't run down the ball in rallies anymore, which is why he headed straight for the net as the game concluded.) And Murray has defeated him a number of times already, including once this year, so there really shouldn't be any taint surrounding his semifinal placing as a result of Roddick's retirement.

Ah well. Bring on Nadal v Djokovic. Speaking of which, I wonder if Roddick will now claim that he was 'in control' of the match all along. ;)

Looks like I'll have to set up my own clay canteen, to cater for the inevitable demand for humble pie. Should Federer reach any finals against Nadal, I'll get some bagels and breadsticks ready too B)2

Replay of the Fed match last night if anyone's interested? A whole lot better than the abysmal tripe the England football team are currently producing.

jack.hl.ng - March 28, 2007 08:05 PM (GMT)
wow, really didnt expect a retirement from roddick...

it was probably the wiser decision, on the bright side, MURRAY!!!

Pebs - March 28, 2007 08:07 PM (GMT)
yaaay for Murray and, whilst on a downer currently about Roddick, shame for him, hope he recovers quick from what ails him.

SaraLess - March 28, 2007 08:19 PM (GMT)
appears England have just scored, though still a parlous effort.

Does anyone know what time Nadal is playing? I am relying on him to bring some cheer to this tournament. I anticipate a good season for Rafa.
