Title: Unnecessary Pressure - Time to deliver!
Description: Federer v Canas

Q. Suppose next time you're going to meet again him in a match, thinking now that he has the positive score, so to speak, 2 and 1 against you, is it going to be different for you in a match, or just like any other match?
ROGER FEDERER: No. It's a normal situation. I know I can lose to him. I know I can beat him. Yeah, I know it's going to be a tough match. I played him years ago in Toronto. It was really hot, and I was the favorite, too, ended up losing against him, and he ended up winning the tournament.
And then I played him here, you know, and I think if I would have played him in the third or fourth round, I would have beaten him, you know. But just not today in the first round, he was too tough.

I am sure many of you read Roger's interview after his IW defeat. This simple bold -in every sense - line about playing and beating Canas in the later stage might play up in Fed and Canas's mind tonight. This is certainly going to spice up the encounter where Canas might get even more motivated and Federer will have the extra pressure to live by his words.

I won't miss it. I still think Fed will win though but if it goes wrong for him early in the match, a shock could happen again.

I think Gasquet went too often for the impossible shots, Roger has to be more patient, unlike yesterday!
His first serve and slice (block) backhand will do the trick tonight.
To me this is a good opportunity for Fed for a turnaround, just like last year at IW against Gasquet where he finally got his groove back.

Gasquet went for too much mostly at break points which was a bit stupid. He needs to be more patient as you say but for that he needs to be fitter (pointed by Wise yesterday).

It looks like Canas is boring Federer to death with his game.

Canas is cooked. no more energy left in him. Too much running.

Though I expected Fed to win, my original post was clearly pointing out the unnecessary and now wrong statement by Fed at the end of his previous loss to Canas.

Why was it obviously wrong? He said he could've beaten him in the third round in IW. So there's no way to know whether this is true or false

IMO Canas's performance in Miami was much improved over IW :yikes:

So was Fed's, but that extra spark he had last year seemed to be missing.

I think we can expect Canas to climb back to the top pretty quickly on this form. (See him lose to Robredo now :yikes:)

Good spot. I don't particularly care about comments to the press, but this is a clear example of Federer's arrogance backfiring in his face.

If he'd just kept his mouth shut, he'd have been the only one fired up for today. However, this kind of nonsense is bound to have made Canas extra determined to defeat him again. Not to mention the pressure he put on himself, which I'm still not convinced he's good at dealing with.

Let me guess Roger, you'd have won if it had been the final, eh?

The losses of transitional no1 and no 3 in Miami yet again exposes the bogus status enjoyed by these two ,purely on the basis of beating chokers. The ATP should ensure justice by
1. Only ruling nonchoke losses as official and countable.
2. reject results/losses ,where the superior opponent choked.
3. Consider 64-64-64 as a triple bagel.

This is necssary to ensure th integrity of a game in a absymal;ly weak era where chokes and transitional champions are denying justice.

I found this hilarious.....
