A couple notable results thus far.

V. Williams d. Fedak 7-5, 6-2. A characteristic slow start but a convincing finish sets Venus one win away from the much-anticipated showdown with Sharapova. She faces Kirilenko next.

Loit d. Bammer 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. Bammer looks like she just ran out of steam, both in the match and with her strong run of late. But Loit is a fellow form player, coming off a recent title of her own, so I wouldn't read too much into the loss. Those of you who didn't rush to transfer Bammer into your fantasy tennis squad will be glad you were cautious. B)

Vera Dushevina just took the first set off of Pratt....

A straightforward day for the tournament's seeds, apart from the two Scotsguy mentioned.

But Indian Wells champion Hantuchova had a surprisingly tough test in her first set against Portuguese wildcard Michelle Larcher de Brito, exchanging breaks twice and scoring a third to edge it 7-5 before rallying to completely shut out her young opponent 6-love in the second. Larcher de Brito merits more than a passing mention, since at 14 years and nearly two months of age she was the youngest player to win a first-round match at the tournament (stunning American veteran Shaughnessy) since Capriati did it a month shy of 14 herself back in 1990, and beyond that apparently the seventh youngest to ever win a main draw WTA match at all. She won't forget her time in Florida anytime soon, I suspect, and perhaps we'll be seeing her again in the not-so-near future.

Actually as a tournament I prefer indian Wells (And I know somebody's gonna say 'is that cos Maria got double bagelled there' and it's going to be very wiitty and blah blah blah) but actually I think it's a better tournament in terms of the area etc....and if Miami wasn't made compulsory due to stupid sponsership things with bloody sonyericson (who don't even make good phones) I think Indian Wells would be a lot more successful than Miami
