Okay, I'll take first bite... looks like Murray's going to have to earn his ranking points the hard way. Unless I've read it wrong, to reach the final he'll probably have to beat Hewitt, Roddick and Nadal

chetanpv - March 20, 2007 12:26 AM (GMT)
Igor Andreev first round. He is a dangerous player on a slow surface. Of course we all know him as the last player to beat Nadal.
Fed better lookout for this one.
He also has Almagro, Gasquet and Tommy before the SF.

Nadal again has Youzhny and Blake till QF :(

Manzikert - March 20, 2007 06:46 AM (GMT)
Projected R16 match-ups:

===
Federer v Gasquet (I bet that makes Gasquet 'sad')
Haas v Robredo / Verdasco
-
Davydenko / Acasuso v Chela / Berdych
Nalbandian v Ljubicic (not unlike W/O for Ljubicic at this point)
--
Gonzalez / Melzer v Murray / Hewitt
Ferrer / Tursunov v Roddick
-
Blake / Safin v Djokovic
Youzhny / Baghdatis v Nadal
===

Based on recent performance, the Blake v Safin match-up is impossible to handicap. It could go either way, and probably to the one who is the least frail mentally. And either one is potentially easy pickings for a Djokovic coming off his strong IW run, without having broken a sweat and riding high in confidence (or hubris).

We know Nadal generally can handle Baghdatis, but I don't think someone else will take care of Youzhny for him this time round. Which is a great opportunity to finally put paid to one of his nemeses. Unlike with Blake or Berdych, I don't think Youzhny's recent successes over the Spaniard have come strictly because of how their game matches up, but rather as a matter of form with the Russian in the ascendant, and Nadal in a relative slump--in fact Nadal has beaten him twice on hard court (once in a Slam), both in early 2005 during the Russian's first Top 20 incarnation. (In contrast, he has never managed to beat either Berdych or Blake on hard court, losing three times to each on the surface.) Of course, that very same Blake may well finally string some wins together and be waiting for him in the quarters, and if the American is playing well enough to do that then he'd be a much trickier proposition.

Murray should by rights reach a QF against Roddick. Gonzalez is much more vulnerable these days, as is the perpetually-ailing Hewitt, and we know Murray has notched victories against both. And since Murray and Roddick seem to be genuine rivals trading off victories against one another, I'd like to think it's Murray's turn to come out on top this time for another semi placing (against Nadal ideally). Interestingly, the victor in each of their five encounters has always won in straight sets.

So the QFs I'd like to see? Murray v Roddick, Blake v Nadal, Berdych v Ljubicic, Gasquet v Haas (I know we'll get Federer v Haas instead, but just think of the potential battle of the backhands!).

chetanpv - March 20, 2007 11:25 AM (GMT)
Just saw the wild card who plays against Andreev and its the american Sam Querry. The youngster has a big serve and huge groundstrokes.
I think he'll easily get past Andreev.
Federer v Querry is anybody's game.

There may be a slight chance that Wise Analyst and myself will have to bake another pie this saturday ;)

SaraLess - March 20, 2007 11:42 AM (GMT)
No chance, Chet - the only pie baked will be by myself, a large slice of Federer celebration cake all round :D

I'm still wondering what to make of Rafa's draw-I'd like to think Blake and Youzhny...I think he'll be fine if he continues in this formidable form. So good to see him coming into the net more and more. His confidence is in ascendence at the moment, so this can only be a good thing.

Nalbandian v Ljubicic again?!?!

QF for me...

Murray v Roddick,

Safin v Nadal,

Berdych v Nalbandian (though I have a feeling it could be Davydenko vs Ljubicic)

Federer v Haas

chairman - March 20, 2007 12:30 PM (GMT)
This draw is with intent to kill Nadal. All his nemesis loaded in one sector.

drakey01 - March 20, 2007 05:20 PM (GMT)
Well it makes up for his last one when he never faced anyone who stood a chance I suppose.

Fully agree chet. Quickfire Querrey Quashes Quaking Federer will be the headlines later this week.

With all this time in the kitchen, I'm starting to feel like a professional chef...

Sara, all these pies can't be too good for your figure?! I recommend a diet :P

Wait ... are you saying that Federer *will* lose on Saturday? Or are you saying he *might* lose?

In the first case, you should be prepared to eat some humble pie yourself if you are proved wrong ... do you have the stature for it? Also, I think you still owe us running across Centre Court naked with a sign "Federer is the GOAT", I think :P :P :P

If, on the other hand, you think Federer will *probably* win --- then we're of the same opinion :ok:

For the record, while I was worried before the match against Canas, I don't really think Querrey will give him problems

liam_valid - March 20, 2007 10:41 PM (GMT)
Karlovic just beat Dancevic in qualifiers. Dancevic was looking really good against Gonzo last week but lost here in 3 sets

Manzikert - March 21, 2007 04:27 AM (GMT)
A couple of interesting notes regarding the qualifiers, who have now been placed in the draw:

* Last week's surprise victor against Federer, Caņas, will be facing none other than Henman in the first round. It bodes not well for the Englishman, who is still struggling to get back into form.

* Karlovic (who apparently is fit again despite retiring from a Challenger event last week) will be facing Garcia-Lopez. The Spaniard bested Baghdatis last week, but should Karlovic get past him he'll be facing Olivier Rochus in the latest instalment of their David v Goliath encounters.

* If Feliciano Lopez (who has become a dangerous floater since his slump in the rankings) defeats Massu, which is well within his ability, he will become an intriguing opening-round opponent for Safin.

mightyjeditribble - March 21, 2007 12:13 PM (GMT)
Not a bad draw for Federer, I would say.

First two rounds should be OK, I think, if he's got his focus together. Third match will be Gasquet (unless Canas or Henman make a splash, which isn't completely inconceivable). Gasquet has come close a few times in three-setters against Roger recently, but I don't think he will prove to be a stumbling block here. QF will probably be Haas or Robredo.

SaraLess - March 21, 2007 12:30 PM (GMT)
Firstly, not a great draw for Henman-I anticipate some problems for him with Canas.

Safin and Lopez could really be an interesting one-I look forward to this match up.

Second...Fully agree chet. Quickfire Querrey Quashes Quaking Federer will be the headlines later this week.

With all this time in the kitchen, I'm starting to feel like a professional chef...

Sara, all these pies can't be too good for your figure?! I recommend a diet

That's still a lot less than the amount of your own words you've had to consume, Wise!
So, as MJT says-are you conclusively saying Federer WILL lose, MAY lose or is LIKELY to lose. Just so there can be no "Querilous Querrey has serious Qualms....and chokes" excuses! roflmao

Seriously, I anticipate no problems for Federer to march through-he's got a pretty routine draw. Nadal has the greater problem. :(
However, it really of great importance for Federer to win this going into cc season. If Nadal wins here, no one will come close to him on clay.

Easiest thing to do is to click on "quote" next to the post. (If you then press "preview", I think you will get the code for it as well.)

Overall: put
, but without the space at the end, to begin a quote. Then put
to end the quote. To add name, date etc. to the quote, write e.g.
for the beginning term. (Each without the space at the end.)

I awlays think the start to Miami can be a bit of an anti-climax because ti takes 2 days before the seeds start a d therefore youy can't really see any major upsets. However I think it's good for getting the lesser known players recognised because they can play on a show court etc....

(I know this is the atp section but i thought i'd just over-analyse some WTA matches too....)

I'll be interested to see how Querrey vs Andreev goes, one youngster battling up the rankings verses a player returning from injury battling up the rankings.

Also inteested to see how Venus does against Fedak, if she plays like she did against Peer......H2H 1-0 Venus

Henman has possibly the toughest qualifier out there, Canas will be a tough player to beat but if Tim is serving well and able to get to the net.....H2H 5-1 Canas

Radwasnka verses Perry could be inteesting-oth made their marks by reaching R16 in Wimbledon and both hae had a decent amount of success, but neither has made another impression at a major tournament...H2H 0-0

Also the return of Verkerk (a player some of you might remember from the deeper reaches of your memeory) as he plays Grosjean.

Would hope to see Dushevia make an impact, she has been qualifying a lot for tournaments recently before getting a tough draw. Pratt is definetely within her range. H2H 1-1

How will BAmmer do after her excellent run in IW...she will have a fair bit of pressure on her now.

And keep an eye out for Kateryna Bondarenko against Nakamura....H2H 0-0

Pretty good day for the US men. :ok:

Two qualifiers and one WC entry knocking out their direct-entry opponents . . .

QUOTE (vivahate @ Mar 23 2007, 02:34 PM)
what's the deal with verkerk these days??

He's outside the top 1000 and is just trying to get back up the rankings.....

However I think he would be better asking for WCs into challengers rather than Masters series.....

YAY-Querrey and Korolev won!!!!

Its saying on the schedule and the draw that Sluiter is playing Hewitt. Yet on the current scoreboard, its saying that its Kendrick vs Sluiter 2-2  The website has been playing up all week so is this another mistake, or has Hewitt been replaced by Kendrick?

Manzikert - March 23, 2007 05:01 PM (GMT)
The main draw has Kendrick listed as a lucky loser in for Hewitt, who is out with a bad back. (He really has a host of various fitness complaints these days, unfortunately.) A shame, as I was looking forward to a rematch of last year's San Jose final that put Murray on the map.

Meanwhile, Kendrick can't be too happy about it, given he's lost to Murray twice in the past year, one of those a double bagel. B)

Blake is a break down in the 3rd set. Lucky Loser Kendrick (who replaced injured Hewitt) through in straights against Sluiter. And Mathieu just served a first set set bagel to Melzer

liam_valid - March 23, 2007 06:58 PM (GMT)
Blake is 5-2 down in the final set. Youzhny has been broken in the first set of his match

liam_valid - March 23, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
And Blake is out 6-7 6-2 3-6 to Serra

Wise_Analyst - March 23, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
Serra dumps Blake out

And Youzhny loses the first set 6-3 to the in-form Gabashvili - could the draw be opening up for Nadal again?
