The womens event hasn't really taken off as yet, overshadowed by the upsets in the mens.
Today we have the last 3rd round matches and after this things should get a lot more interesting as some of the 4th round match ups are very strong.
Today's match ups should go with seeding, I definitely can't see Kuznetsova, Petrova & Vaidisova having many problems. Safina should also be too strong for Bartoli. Ivanovic v Molik is probably the pick of the round - It would be nice to see Molik continue her run but she's still not the player she was and I think Ivanovic will come through this one.
Golovin v Stosur is also worth watching as there is no clear favourite to win this match. They've only played once before, back in Sydney 2005 when Stosur won but Golovin has probably had the better year so far overall so I think she'll probably come out on top.
The minor matches are
Bammer v Peng (Peng is probably the stronger player but Bammer is more consistent and has been playing very well this year so far and is bound to be confident)
Sugiyama v Garbin - Another one that could go either way but Sugiyama is more experienced in these big tournaments and should come out on top especially as she leads their H2H 3-0.

Oi what's wrong with Tati - ok she can choke at the drop of the hat but I like her - she's a bit of a nutcase.
I saw in Australia this year against Peer and she had the most ridiculously strong tan in the world!
I loved her response in Ace Magazine this month when asked if she liked her wine like the other French players she said 'well actually i'm more of a beer person'

She was brought up there though wasn't she?
In fact i'm sure she spent much more of her time in France than Mary Pierce.
Oh well - I like her anyway, with Mary not around I need a flaky almost French diva to support!

She's got a good shot at the final here, if she can get past Petrova, although I reckon Nicole will be the finalist from the bottom...

Great day of tennis today on the womens side with the entire 4th round being played.
Sharapova v Zvonareva will be interesting to see if Vera can capitalise on Maria's poor play so far this tournament. As much as I'd like to see her get a big win i've got a feeling Maria will squeeze through.
Hingis v Hantuchova - Hopefully Martina won't have another meltdown against Daniella and comes through this. Nothing against Hantuchova but Hingis will make the later stages more interesting.
Kuznetsova v Sugiyama - Sugiyama can be a difficult opponent sometimes but really Svetlana should take this in straight sets.
Li Na v Jankovic - Obviously both players have done very well in the last year but Jelena is the better & more consistent players and should take this though it could be close.
Golovin v Petrova - Well Golovin seems to be on good form after her demolition of Stosur while Petrova struggled initially against Granville so this should be a tight match as most of their previous ones have been. Given that she leads their H2H 3-1 I think Golovin can take this one.
Peer v Chakvetadze - Possibly the match up of the round between two players looking to really step up consistently into top 10 territory. Both are great movers and strikers of the ball but I think Anna has the better tactical sense and should come out on top.
Vaidisova v Bartoli - Considering how out of shape she looks i'm not sure how Bartoli beat Safina but I can't see her repeating that feat against Nicole who should win in straight sets.
Bammer v Ivanovic - Bammer certainly seems to be one of those players who comes into their game with age and she looked pretty comfortable against Peng but Ivanovic also looked very good against Molik. Really Ana should win this but she is still too inconsistent and Bammer is the kind of player likely to cause her problems. Could go either way.
SerenaW19 - March 13, 2007 01:09 PM (GMT)
fully agree :ok: ... the first reallly exciting day of the women's game really :D

I knew Sharapova would lose. It was pretty obvious, given her crap form, but I'm sure she blame it on some 'injury' The annoying thing is though I said Zvonereva in three sets, and I bloody put Sharapova in the predictions, coz I'm a mug :yikes:
Jankovic losing was a suprise too :yikes:
That gives Hingis a great chance now of making the final. If she beats Hantuchova, I think she'll face either Chakvetadze/Peer in the qtrs, then obviously either Vera or Li in the semis. I'm going for Hingis to win this. Come on :ok:

Manzikert - March 14, 2007 04:26 AM (GMT)
Well, we have our quarterfinalists:
Zvonareva v Li
Peer v Hantuchova
-
Golovin v Bammer
Kuznetsova v Vaidisova
After all the round of 16 dust settled, Kuznetsova and Vaidisova are both the only Top 10 players left standing, as well as the only players not to lose to lower-ranked opponents--and yet they now face each other in what may well be the de facto final.
Looks like whatever upset virus was going around on the men's side has now reached the women, although the scoreline for the Ivanovic loss certainly isn't pretty: 6-7(6), 6-0, 6-3. That match was also the most drastic upset in terms of ranking; all the other women are Top 20 players who can be expected to take down higher-ranked players on their day, whilst Bammer has never cracked the Top 40 (though she is certainly on a hot streak of late).
I'd be happy to see any of the women in the top half of the draw reach the final, and each could use the valuable points on offer to more securely ensconce themselves within the Top 20. (Peer could set herself on the threshold of the Top 10 with the title, in fact.) It's difficult to say who could do it, though. Zvonareva certainly profited from a shaky Sharapova's largesse, but as a dangerous player I'm sure she made the most of the openings presented her. The segments I saw of the Li match suggest she was at the top of her game against Jankovic (kind of like the first set and a half against Hingis at the AO, before she lost the plot). Peer is the highest ranked of the group and due for an official breakthrough into the top echelon, whereas Hantuchova (who came out swinging smartly and just had her way with Hingis) seems to be riding high in confidence with her good results of late--which include reaching another Tier I final recently in Zurich, taking a set off Sharapova--and bolstered by her status not only as a former champion of the tournament, but the only one still alive in the draw.
I think I'm leaning towards whoever emerges from the Peer v Hantuchova match as the finalist from the top half. And the Kuznetsova v Vaidisova winner from the bottom half almost certainly, despite the tendency of each to abruptly go off the rails without warning.
GS2 - March 14, 2007 10:13 AM (GMT)
So much for my predictions! Got the bottom half of the draw pretty much right but none of the top!
Great win for Vera who I thought would push Maria but then choke and let her off the hook - really wasn't expecting the opposite to happen!
Sad to see Jankovic lose but Li Na is a very dangerous player when she's on (but liable to be dreadful when she's not!). Maybe this will make Jelena reconsider playing every tournament under the sun especially with a injury!
Peer wasn't a huge surprise as that match could always have gone either way but Hantuchova defeating Hingis so easily was. a worrying sign for Martina especially since after looking so good in Tokyo.
I really feel Kuznetsova could take the title now - she's playing well and Vaidisova hasn't looked especially convincing. That match has the feel of the final but considering the number of upsets we've had this year anything could still happen.
And yay Golovin got through even if it was only through Petrova retiring (though I reckon Tati could have won that anyway) and should make the semi's unless Bammer pulls off another upset - not impossible. It's always nice to see one of the older, unhyped players having their day in the sun especially since the tour is so full of teenage prospects at the moment.
Interesting that this tournament is now dominated with the second tier of top 20 players (ie not the ones that have made their top 10 debut in the last 9 months - Safina, Vaidisova, Chakvetadze & Jankovic) but the ones coming up just behind them - Peer, Li Na, Golovin, Zvonareva & Hantuchova's success should spice up the top 20 and increase the competition for top 10 places which can only be good for the game.
And Henin is back at number 1 where she belongs :yahoo:
