Title: General Updates from Indian Wells

Manzikert - March 11, 2007 10:03 PM (GMT)
Li and Hantuchova toughed out wins over Bondarenko and Schiavone to keep their progress alive.

Peer and Safarova have swapped sets, the Israeli taking the first 6-3 and the Czech rebounding with an emphatic 6-1 in the second. This was the standout match-up of the second round and looks to be living up to that billing.

Pretty solid win for Daniela :)

Peer wins 64 in the third, good test for her, knew she'd come through though :D

Peer also did well to keep it together and ultimately hold off a fightback from Safarova after initially having led 5-1 in the decider. She'll need to be match tough for her next opponent, who is likely to be Chakvetadze.

Sharapova overcame a slow start to see off Dechy 7-5, 6-2.

Peer's a great fighter :)

Hmm...Chakvetadz/Peer a tough one to call

It's been difficult to focus on the women's matches given the seeded massacre which took place for the men today, but Zvonareva has gone through in a routine 3 and 3 win, booking her spot in one of the more intriguing R16 match-ups against Sharapova.

Meanwhile the defending champion still has the formidable Jankovic lying in wait as potential quarterfinal opponent, having got past Muller in 2 and 4.

And yes, Chakvedtadze v Peer would be tough to call, although the latter has yet to play her third round match. If the Russian doesovercome Peer, she will have made her Top 10 debut in the process (by unfortunately pushing out countrywoman Dementieva, who didn't even have a chance to defend her finalist points).

Well, Chakvetadze through as expected, and now Vaidisova and Ivanovic through as well. Hingis and Hantuchova are set to face off in a rematch of the 2002 IW final, made more intruiging by the latter's victory in their recent Dubai meeting.

Ninth seed Safina fell to Bartoli in straights 4 and 3, which is a trifle disappointing. Perhaps the Frenchwoman is rediscovering her late season form again, which has been notably absent the beginning of this one. I don't expect her to give Vaidisova as much trouble when they meet in their R16 match, though.

The Sybille Bammer Kuzzy match looks a good one..

In the first set Sybille has broken Sveta's serve twice, and Sveta has broken back twice.. Now on a tie break..

Sybille Bammer seems to be having a great run in this tourney :)

Justine and Vera seem to be playing a game of first-one-to-hold-serve-wins in the first set of their match. After three straight breaks of serve, Justine had a couple set points at 5-3. She hasn't been able to convert so far, though.
