Well, England played really well up front, and the backs tried their damnedest to mess their feast of possession, but all came through ok in the end.
France weren't so good really. Pale shadows of the side that beat Ireland, for example.
Don't know the maths for next weekend. But it looks like the 3 strongest teams on 6 points each, and all playing the 3 other sides, so in theory all ought to win. If they do, then would the title be split??
Mind you, I don't think that any of the matches will be cut and dried, but can't see just one of the top three winning.. will be at least 2 of them sharing the title, methinks.
Flame - March 11, 2007 11:35 PM (GMT)
if the top 3 win next week it'll come down to points difference. france are 4 ahead of ireland in points difference now i believe. england are way back.
so it's basically a two horse race if the top 3 win.
can't see scotland doing us any favours in paris mind you.
anyway, we live in hope. :)
i thought the english youngsters played really well today, btw.
petalp - March 11, 2007 11:45 PM (GMT)
Well, if points difference is the factor then it should go down to the wire between Ireland and France. And re: Scotland/ Italy, who knows?? Can't see either team rolling over that much, and Scotland beat France last year (I think..)
Re: England performance, it was the first time that I've seen England actually play exciting rugby for a very long time.. at least 3 years anyway. makes a nice change :ok:

next week will be tough for England. Wales will be trying their damndest to stuff us and will either play a total blinder (if that's possible for them this year) or will just play a spoiling game and go for England giving away penalties.
Ireland have perhaps the easiest draw, although the Italians are on a high at the moment and could keep the points difference down
France have a tricky task too, the Scots have played well and won't be a push over by any means.
I think Ireland will win the championship abd have a sneaking suspicion that France will be second with England third with either a draw or defeat against Wales.
So hope I'm wrong

France are the hot favourites for the championship - Scotland fought hard against Ireland but to be honest I think the match told you more that Ireland aren't as good as many think. France should take out Scotland by around 20 points i'd have thought, while i'm not entirely convinced England OR Ireland will win their last matches. I think Italy will expose Ireland up front to be honest!
Performance of the weekend goes jointly to England and Itlay for me! The Welsh can moan all they like about that late refereeing blunder, but at the end of the day they were stupid and disrespectful going in the corner in the first place, and i'm convinced the Italians would have held them off their line.
As for England - well I'd been saying all this week to my mates that the French never play very well at Twickenham, I was not at all surprised that England won, the two best all-round pack in the championship were probably on show yesterday!
Awesome_Agassi - March 12, 2007 05:13 PM (GMT)
France should thrash Scotland and win the championship to be honest. Sure at Murrayfield the Scots can sometimes be a tough nut to crack, but away from home they are absolutely awful.
Ireland I think will edge past Italy to finish 2nd. They were pretty poor on Saturday but they will still win in Rome. Ireland should prove a different kettle of fish for Italy than very poor Scotland and Wales sides.
I'm not sure about England's final match. Wales will be absolutely desperate to avoid the wooden spoon and they always get fired up playing against England so they could cause a surprise like Scotland did in their final match in 2000.

what is a triple crown btw?

Ireland won the triple crown this year because they beat England, Scotland and Wales.
i.e. only applies to a British Isles team if they beat all of the other British Isles teams.
Tenez - March 12, 2007 10:23 PM (GMT)
I did not know that. I thought it was winning three other teams. France has (or will soon ;)) beat 3 British isles teams but it is not quite the same I agree. The triple crown is a family business it seems.
We have won the Single crown! that is whoever beats the other latin team...only for those who play the 6 nations AND have Mediterrraneen beaches!.

The triple crown dates back to when the championship was the Four/"home" nations a long time ago - A mythical title for the team that won all their matches (although now I think there's a trophy/plate for it, which rather spoils it.).
When France were admitted to the championship in 1910 it obviously became the five nations and the new title of 'grand slam' was born, and recently Italy have made it six of course.
In all honesty I am not quite too sure why Ireland are getting that excited about their triple crowns - The cycle of the tournament means that really they should have won a grand slam once, if not twice in the last few years!
I say that because this year, and two years ago, Ireland have had a highly competetive team, and have their two (usually) toughest opponents, France and England, at home. Both times they've choked against the French, and obviously two years ago they lost to Wales who were on their amazing glory run.

BIGGEST SICKENER EVER!! :( :( :o :o
Flame - March 17, 2007 05:39 PM (GMT)
to have the championship handed to france by an irish television official awarding a controversial extra time try. on patrick's day. unbelievable. the cruel irony of it.
we were seconds from the grand slam, seconds from the 6 nations title and france have stuck it to us twice.
think i'll go stick my head in an oven.
Tenez - March 17, 2007 06:48 PM (GMT)
Relax, Ireland's turn will come. It is not like France was not worthy of the title. They only lost once away but all in all they were the better team. Tgis fall will be the real deal rugby wise.
