Has anyone ever seen this?I mean for Davenport to inflict such a punishment on Maria at the upcoming event in which she is defending champion must have been painful!
However,I cant understand how the hell this girl leads their H2H.
Can anyone explain this to me!

Explanation = Davenport was shit loads better than Maria on that day!!!! Can anyone expland on that?
Dark_Necrofear - March 9, 2007 11:58 AM (GMT)
So why is it that she only has that 1 win?Was she just below par 4 other times?I cant understand why she has such a poor record against that howler!

Well, its obvious you don't like Maria from our "debate" in the other thread, so why do you think it was? Do you think Davenport it just a better player and was rubbish in the other matches?
Personally I think Maria is the better player overall but with the double bagel (which I didn't see so catn really judge) either Maria didn't show up or Lyndsey was just out of this world.

All of their matches are quite tussles so Im going to boil it down to movement.Neither girl moves great but maybe Maria hits the ball jus a bit harder and Davenport cant seem to get there!
Lindsay is a more natural player and yes she is the better, but sometimes being the better player isnt good enough as with this H2H!

To be honest I don't think we read much into the head to head. The fact Lindsay's ONLY win, was a double bagel surely is a clue that this is a slightly bizarre head to head.
In terms of sets won/lost the head to head is 8-6 Maria I should imagine it would be quite close in terms of games won/lost also. Also all of the matches that Maria one were close and went to three sets, more than the standard of their games I think we can put down Maria winning to her stronger mentality and greater fighting spirit; the one areas of tennis I feel the has the definite superiority over Lindsay in.
I would say Lindsay is a better player than Maria, their games are fairly similar but Lindsay is a far purer striker of the ball. She should've won far more slams, she has been unlucky though playing when the Williames and Capriati were peaking and has injury at unfortunate times, i.e. during the Wimbledon 2005 Final and in 2004 just when she was finding her best form again after years as a perennial quarter finalist. So whatever amount of slams Maria ends her career with, in my eyes, as someone who has followed women's tennis closely since 2000, I will see Lindsay as at least as good a player. And I always see the head to head as slightly misleading, although Maria undoubtedly deserved all of her wins just as Lindsay deserved the bagel
One last thing, I feel it is worth noting that Maria's 2 wins post the double bagel, were close, plus at a time when Lindsay was returning from injury and perhaps not fully focused on tennis. Again Im not making excuses, just making an observation.

Pretty much agreed.

I agree - like I said, "Hunger"
There is some IHT article on the web about Davenport where she pretty much admits tennis was not her be-all and end-all.
Sharapova may be the less talented player (not qualified to comment), but whatever talent she has she extracts from herself, whereas the same cannot be said of Davenport IMHO - someone who could (should?) have won more slams than she did.

One thing I will add about Davenport is that I think she pretty much saved the reputation of the WTA Tour in 1999. Steffi Graf, in her twilight years and in a semi comeback after missing most of 1998 had beaten Hingis at RG and got to the final of Wimbledon in 1999. Had she won it at that stage of her career would have made the WTA tour look a bit silly considering she really wasn't the player she was. Davenport pretty much took her apart in two sets and showed there was still strength in the WTA. I was very glad when she did win. She as under pressure and was a true champ.
Don't get me wrong I loved Graf, but it was time to show that there was depth and a good futue in women's tennis.
SerenaW19 - March 9, 2007 01:05 PM (GMT)
I agree that was very good for women's tennis. Although I think Im right in saying that Steffi won more points than Lindsay in that final but that was one occasion where Lindsay won the big points, at the crucial times
Dark_Necrofear - March 9, 2007 01:22 PM (GMT)
It actually boiled down to 2 games and both had crucial rain delays and that is where the match was won.Lindsay was just better after the delays.I must say that I really wanted Steffi to win that match.
