Title: AMS PacificLife Open

chetanpv - March 6, 2007 09:39 PM (GMT)
The men's singles draw is being announced today. Should be on the official site www.pacificlifeopen.com in a few hours.

Manzikert - March 6, 2007 10:42 PM (GMT)
And here it is:

A quick rundown on projected R16 match-ups:

Federer v Hewitt
Djokovic/Tursunov v Blake
-
Davydenko v Murray/Safin (sigh)
Gonzalez v Haas (AO semi rematch)
---
Ljubicic v Nalbandian (Ljubicic has won their last three encounters)
Gasquet v Roddick
-
Robredo v Baghdatis/Berdych
Nadal v Youzhny

Yes, Nadal landed in Berdych's and Youzhny's quarter. So much for his tourney.

liam_valid - March 6, 2007 10:48 PM (GMT)
Henmans playing Hernych first round, then he will play Calleri, then probably Davydenko. If both him and Murray make it, they are scheduled to meet in the quarter finals.

GOOOO TIIIIIMMMMMYYYYYYY :yahoo: :yahoo:

I'm sure you meant to include another possibility. ;)

When you feast your eyes on both sides of the draw, it really brings home what an astounding depth of talent there is at the moment. The draw has one of the fairest distributions of talent that I can remember in recent events.

Federer's only question mark is a possible meeting with Murray in the semi final (this assumes the Telegraph's assessment of Murray as the greatest player since McEnroe is accurate! I'm unconvinced but who am I to quibble with Robert Phelps). Everyone else is really going to have to battle. Poor old Nadal scheduled to meet Youzhny in his third match but then again, there are about eight other players in the draw who are similarly troublesome for him.

What a shame we can't watch video streaming in the UK (if I'd stayed in Hungary, I could watch it at my leisure .... rohadt életbe!)

Awesome_Agassi - March 6, 2007 11:39 PM (GMT)
Very tough draw for Murray. Safin in the 3rd round. Then possibly Davydenko in the 4th round, and either Gonzalez or Haas in the quarter finals. If he gets though all that, Federer awaits in the semis. This tournament will be a very good test for him.

Huh??? He will meet Tim in the quarters, not Haas or Gonzo ;) roflmao

Brutal draw for Nadal as well:
Clement, Verdasco, Youzhny, Berdych, Roddick, Federer

Did anyone else find the headline on the official site amusing?

"Federer and Hewitt on collision course" ..

Chet is forcasting FED in the final against Rafa... roflmao roflmao

So all your threds like "Hurricane Hajek 2 hammer Federer" -I am copy and paste from another board are just :bs: roflmao roflmao -

BTW: you made a mistake Chet there is no more Nasdaq 100 event in Miami but from this year on it is the Sony Ericsson Open ...

Anyway to go back to the draw...well I really do not see Rafa passing the obstacle Youzhny or (after) AROD...

In the other side FED should move more "quickly" but still Djoko is there in his side, Hewitt (why not he could generate some problems)...

But what I really hope is a semi against Murray (even if he has a very difficult draw, AA is right )...

That is a really appealing looking 16!! :o It's the sort of mix that I'd hope there will be at the slams.

I like the look of pretty much all of the matchups. Whoever does make it through to the semis/ final will have made it through with at least 2-3 tough matches.

It will be interesting to see if Safin, Haas, Gonzo and Youzhny continue their decent form. And indeed both Fed and Rafa have challenging draws ahead of them. More practice for Rafa against some players against which he's had a poor record. Well, Fed had several matchups such as these earlier on in his career (Nalby, Agassi, Henman) and best to look on the upside and say that at least it gives Rafa the opportunity to work on these issues..

And for the Brits, a good chance for Henman and Murray to show their mettle as well.

BTW; Petalp, is that Misa Krajicek (holding the Rosmalen cup) in your avatar?

Nick Cica - March 7, 2007 09:49 AM (GMT)
If Ivo Karlovic makes his way through qualifying, he could also put a cat or two among the pigeons, depending where he is drawn. I doubt if Federer or Nadal would choose him as a first round opponent.

Well said. Karlovic is the number 9 seed for qualifying, but is one of the highest ranked players there. But he has been injured (left knee) for a couple of weeks... fingers crossed.

[9] KARLOVIC, Ivo vs WITTEN, Jesse

then the winner of

FLEISHMAN, Zack vs GUCCIONE, Chris [15]:yikes:

Other interesting qualifying players who could cause upsets are Guillermo Canas
and, on his day, Rainer Schuettler. Also Alex Bogdanovic and Dusan Vemic have an easy-ish time in the Qualifiers.

I feel Nadal might suprise a few people and win this event i just feel he is saving his best for the big events. :)

I agree - it is an important tournament for him. I don't think it is going too far to say that it will be disappointing if he does not get at least to the 4th round. We will see how much he has taken from his 'heroic' defeat by Nadal and his win over Davydenko this year.

I don't know whether bye's are a mixed blessing - someone like Murray only has one game to play himself into the Tournament before facing a big player.

those who don't think federer will romp to the title please step forward...

I've just noticed Guillermo Canas is the lucky loser drawn against Jan Hajek. Should he defeat the Czech, it could propose a difficult task for Roger Federer in his first match. Canas can rally all day, just like Nadal, who's given Federer all kinds of difficulty in the past. An upset here certainly wouldn't surprise me.

chetanpv - March 10, 2007 10:11 PM (GMT)
Canas absolutely cruched the Czech 6-1 6-1 and will play Federer next. You know if you ever wondered when Federer may lose in the first round, this may be it.

Canas can run like Nadal all day. Federer better not take this one lightly.

Wise_Analyst - March 10, 2007 10:37 PM (GMT)
Now there's a chilling warning if ever I saw one. I've got a feeling Canas is going to produce the goods against Fed in that match-up. Looking forward to it.

greasepipe - March 11, 2007 10:13 AM (GMT)
Canas; dope abuser, h2H against Fed 1-1...
sounds like a perfect stimulus to kick off for Fed :)

Surprisingly, I kind of agree with chet here. Canas is a good player. Fed is often not at his best yet in the early rounds, and he shouldn't take Canas lightly.

On the other hand, Canas beat him once before (even though it was in 2002), and Roger always seems to try and make sure not to underestimate any opponent. So probably he's going to be fine ... I'm just slightly worried for some reason.

Go Roger!
