Title: The Championships

Dark_Necrofear - March 5, 2007 03:22 PM (GMT)
Does anyone else agree with me when I say that Wimbledon 2007 has a Williams sister name on it provided they both turn up?

chairman - March 6, 2007 12:49 PM (GMT)
No I dont agree. Until, I see serena on a tennis court consistently. There's always the chance with Venus.

SerenaW19 - March 6, 2007 01:19 PM (GMT)
Hmm, well they're clearly the best grass courters of this generation by a long stretch, so if they play well and turn up injury free then they're obviously the clear favourites. It's not set in stone by any means though.

I do think though that both Williams will be motivated to win it this year, Wimbledon in the favourite tournament for both of them, they have so many good memories and see it as the most important tournament to win as well; so hopefully they'll both put in the effort :)

barrystar - March 6, 2007 01:22 PM (GMT)
If they both turn up fit, I would expect one of them to get it, especially after the Aus Open.

I don't know the WTA rules about how many tournaments you have to enter, but if we have a situation where the Williams' turn up when it suits them to win the big tournaments they cannot be happy with that.

I do think that even though it's good for tennis to have all its players playing well, that it can't be good to have a part timer as the best player on tour; and it makes a mockery of the whole system. I don't think it's very "sporting" not to be fully committed either. But Serena has only pulled out of two tournaments so far, and is down for Miami, Charleston and probably Rome, so here's hoping she plays a full schedule leading upto Wimbledon to give herself the best chance

I honestly would love Venus to win it.And she has said in an interview that she likes the other slams but she LOVES being Wimbledon champion. And it was her first slam so it holds more weight than the others.

If these girls show some form of motivation and get the match play bfeore then,1 of them will walk away with that title.Im convinced of it!

barrystar - March 6, 2007 02:19 PM (GMT)
If one of them is to get it, I'd rather see Serena do it because I did not like Venus' reaction after beating Davenport in 2005.

Most of all, I'd like to see JHH get it third time lucky. I love her style and the fact that as a relatively small person she is (by and large) able to duke it out against the big hitters.

Off the track, I know, but I'd also like to see Mauresmo win RG in front of her home crowd.

Dark_Necrofear - March 6, 2007 02:32 PM (GMT)
No way barry, how could you say that.No one deserved to lose that match and Lindsay is to be credited so much for trying and almost winning it after having held match point!

I dont think Venus's reaction was against Lindsay but rather it was against her critics and after having proving them wrong she had that outburst.I would love for her to lift that trophy!

barrystar - March 6, 2007 02:44 PM (GMT)
I don't think Venus' reaction was against Davenport at all - there is no doubt in my mind that it was all about Venus - but that was exactly why it was so self-absorbed and disrespectful IMHO.

Minutes before she had been slugging it out in a terrific match against a great rival who came so close. Once she had won she behaved as if the final had only ever been about her trials and tribulations and whether she would win or not. It was as if Davenport had only ever been there to provide a backdrop to a chapter in Venus' life story. I was pleased for Venus, sure, and she was a worthy champion (especially after the way she dealt with Sharapova in the Semis) but I wanted to see her have the grace to acknowledge Lindsay as a great opponent on the day and a great champion. I thought it unfortunate that such a simple courtesy was beyond Venus and instead we heard (amongst other things) how God had been instrumental in the outcome of a tennis match..... purleeeese....!

Ivanisevic is just one example of someone who won in v. highly charged circumstances but was able to acknowledge the part played by a great opponent.

Having said that, theres no love lost between Lindsay and the Williams girls and the same holds true for Jenny. So Venus or Serena wouldnt go overboard in praising either of the 2.But I hear you and maybe she should have shown more humility. She did deserve that title though and I think that if she wins it this year then the decade would almost be deemed as Williams Wimbledon Show... ;)

To be fair to Venus, she calmed down a bit in the interviews later on, and I could overstate my case, but her reaction on Court did make me cringe.

You're right about the Williams decade - 5 out of 7 so far since 2000.....

Richard Williams' remark about his daughters is one of the biggest ever "I told you so's" in sports. They are entitled to enjoy that

She did seem to be over overing on court when she won.But having been written off and she pulls that rabbit out of the bag,Im sure I would have done the same.I was really happy though with the way she destroyed Masha, the final was just the cherry on the top!

Richard is a controversial joke, but he knows his girls and tennis!

chairman - March 6, 2007 05:02 PM (GMT)
So what "exactly" did Venus do again? And I mean exactly please.

barrystar - March 6, 2007 06:32 PM (GMT)
She did not really 'do' anything as such, she merely failed to acknowledge her opponent in her on-court speech, talked about herself and how God had helped her (as if he gives a damn about a tennis match), skipped around like a small child with the trophy, and generally behaved as though she had entirely forgotten the existence (or feelings) of Lindsay Davenport, whom she had just beaten in a hard-fought match.

I am not against being thrilled at winning, I was pleased for her as the worthy winner of Wimbledon 05, and I was amazed at her come-back from injury etc., but her performance was graceless.

Wimbledon is William's territory, and Venus wants the title back. When venus sets her mind to something, i cant see anyone stopping her.......

However, Wimbledon is a bit away yet, so i'm not predicting anything yet

Well dl, after your stunningly accurate prediction all of 2-3 months before the AO, you're hedging your bets this time?! :yikes:

ok then.. maybe you'll feel more inspired closer to the tournay, say 6 weeks before or something ;)

I do agree that in the past both Willliams sisters have been guilty of not showing grace either in victory or in defeat.

Also, SW I think that the fact that there might be some needle between Venus and Lindsay does not excuse not giving your opponent credit where it's due.

It is the biggest issue that I have with both of them tbh. However, I recall Serena being more charitable towards Sharapova after the AO, so maybe as they are getting older they are able to acknowledge the achievements of their peers a little more.

Sorry but I am only catching up but, what needle does venus and Davenport have?

What comment exactly is this in reference to petalp? I find it an odd statement if you were indeed talking to me given that this is the first post I've made on the matter

Also I don't what all this nonense about Serena and Venus having problems with Lindsay is about. They all get on well as far as I know, they have their moments on the court but as far as I know it stays there. I read a comment from Serena once that said that if it wasn't her or Venus playing they'd always cheer on Lindsay, I think this might've been after Lindsay's AO 2005 disappointment actually so Im not sure how you can call Serena an ungracious winner. She's a bit arrogant when she loses but she's very gracious when she wins. And Venus wasn't that bad in her acceptance speech, was she? I was a little surprised as the lack of mention of Lindsay but it's not like she said I am the best I always have been. She said what a battle it had been and how pleased she was to come through it.

I don't think any of them get on well with JCap, but then again she rubs up all her fellow top americans the wrong way, including BJK and Chris Evert I believe roflmao
