Liam.. You must be an excretor!

Here's something that came up in conversation at Father's Day dinner when several of us ordered asparagus. Asparagus causes some people's urine to smell. Did you know that? Did you want to know that?

Researchers Allison and McWhirter found that about 40% of the people in their study produced no odor even after eating as much as a pound of asparagus. If you said "my pee doesn't eat after eating asparagus" you could be in that group, dubbed "non-excretors."

On the other hand, it's also possible you're an excretor (your pee stinks after munching asparagus), but you can't smell it. It appears that some people are incapable of smelling the chemicals involved. How do we know this? Researchers collected urine samples and asked subjects to smell the samples. The subjects reported asparagus stink pee even in people who swore their pee didn't stink.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions. I noticed that most scientists are reluctant to ascribe the ability to make and then smell the odor to genetics (but what else could explain it?). There's also confusion as to the exact chemical that causes the smell. Early studies fingered methyl mercaptan, but newer studies say it got a bum rap.

Gas chromatography of the urine has shown that the odour could be caused by S-methyl-thioacrylate and S-methyl-3- (methylthio)thiopropionate,7 while a combination of methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulphide, and small amounts of sulphur-oxidised compounds could also be responsible.8 The source of these metabolites is unknown, but the last paper postulates asparagusic acid, which is specific to asparagus and, when given to humans, causes the same characteristic smell in the urine.
Bonus! - Asparagus stink pee rockin' fun zone:

The smell isn't found in the plant itself. The plant has sulfur-containing chemicals that are converted in the body to malodorous compounds.
The ability to detect the smell diminishes with age starting at about age 35.
Younger asparagus has more of the foundation chemicals than older asparagus.
In nature, the foundation chemicals are believed to protect the plant against fungus.

Liam.. You must be an excretor!

Isn't everybody an excretor ???

QUOTE (trisco @ Feb 26 2007, 10:39 PM)

Researchers collected urine samples and asked subjects to smell the samples. The subjects reported asparagus stink pee even in people who swore their pee didn't stink.

I'm quite curious to know how those researchers found subjects to do this. Wonder what the ad in their local newspaper looked like ? "If you're an experienced wine-taster, this could be the perfect job for you !!" ??

Yeah, I forgot to add though "who has no sense of smell"

Sadly not Serena! Seems it's ok for them to chuck stones at my property and those on it mind! You know how it is these days, you get shit from people, you stand up to them and defend yourself and you end up arrested while they get of Scott free!

Thanks for that! :D I LOVE beetroot me, shame you can't get more of it fresh when it's in season. I grew some but it was crap, as was the asparagus - I blame global warming cos it got infested by hto weather pests. roflmao

I think I am gonna be growing again this year, broccolli, leeks etc. I didn't do anything last year and the garden has gone to pot.. :s

No, I haven't - I don't eat much asparagus so don't know. And after reading this thread, I doubt I'll ever eat it again. "What's my pee going to smell like after this?" is not the most appetising thought when you're trying to eat.

Mine too, the heatwave has ruined a lot fo plants - they arent; growing back for spring! I had an allotment a couple of years back but fighting weeds was a losing battle, then the heatwave produced a load of pest s and the potatoes shot to seed.
