Title: Equal pay row

SW2003 - February 23, 2007 10:52 AM (GMT)
So now its not only the fans that are complaining, Tommy Haas has decided to say that women don't deserve it either!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/6388351.stm

I really am shocked, doesn't he realise that women put in the same effort and quite a few times, the same amount of court time as some of the mens matches... equal pay is highly deserved and people who critise it really need to come up with better excuses than "mens tennis has more depth" as womens tennis can have just as much depth if no more at times.

Gav - February 23, 2007 11:03 AM (GMT)
Yeah, "greater depth" is a poor argument.

We have a thread here:-

http://z3.invisionfree.com/Centre_Court/in...?showtopic=2552

.....where there are better arguments both ways.

I don't think it is as cut and dry as it seems, and people are allowed there different opinions on whether this is right or wrong.

I agree. Haas is entitled to his opinion but was rather stupid to say that in this day and age. his depth argument is not very good anyway. Just because there is alledgedly more depth in the men's game doesnt; mean they always work harder. There are still plenty of straight sets whitewashes to be had.

whatever i may think of the pay row, i don't think Haas is exactly an equal opportunities man - what was his quote at the US Open

If he has said that then he is stupid to comment on the equal pay situation. Who will bother taking into account what he says when he doesn't seem to grasp basic facts about modern society.

Gav is right, he ha shardly expressed his opinion well. If he wants to back it up with reasoned argument then i will respect it but acting like a sexist pig and doing it is not helping.

T01 - February 23, 2007 01:18 PM (GMT)
Let us see if Haas can ever reach a final of GS! pratt..

For the 5 set argument: If Federer wins the tournament withouht dropping a set and say Amelie wins with 3 set matches all the way, then what will these people say?

Talig about depth? Well, sometime WTA has it too. Sharapova nearly went out in 1R at AusOpen this year, and JHH went out in 1R in 2005 Wimbledon. Capriati lost in the 1R of AusOpen in 2003.. We don't see top men lose out like this.

Depends on whether you think they should be paid for winning or losing sets. If you only get paid for winning, then Fed would have won 21 sets to Amelie's 14. :P

No, if Fed wins all his in straights, and Amelie is taken to 3 in every round, they will both have played 21 sets. I commented yesterday if number of sets comes into effect, then should Fed have been given a bonus prize at AO for not dropping one? Or should they have reduced his prize money because he didnt play enough? This whole issue seems to be matter of opinion, i dont think any facts will ever resolve it :)

yorkshire - February 23, 2007 02:22 PM (GMT)
Why don't they at the end of Wimbledon work out how many hours they spent on court and award the money based on that :D

T01 - February 23, 2007 02:23 PM (GMT)
It is about playing the number of sets!

Nick Havoc - February 23, 2007 02:23 PM (GMT)
I know. I was just taking a swipe at the concept that women could play just as many sets at a slam as men. True, but only by losing a third of them. It's the sets you win that really count.

(BTW, for the record, I'm not really against the move for equal pay. I just like to push people into making better arguments.)

well, will this include rain delays?? well, Tim Henman, Lindsay Davenport and the likes should be richer that they are now!! haha..

GS2 - February 23, 2007 02:35 PM (GMT)
All this speculating about how many sets people may have to play is ultimately pointless for one very good reason.

Wimbledon has never wanted the women to play 5 sets - their scheduling problems are bad enough as it is!

The offer has been made by the WTA and it was turned down.

If Wimbledon had said to the women play 5 sets and we'll give you equal money then those that keep banging on about the 3/5 sets might have a point but Wimbledon have never said it so for them to use it as an argument for not paying the women equal money was always hypocritical.

Errr.....and penalise someone for winning in straight sets?

Can just see Federer dropping two sets midway through a match to take it to five so he gets more cash..... Can't really see that one working!!! :P2

SW2003 - February 23, 2007 04:47 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure about the pay by how long you stay on court... that would mean that top players would just let it go to a three setter or five depending on what sex it was. Wimbledon would be bankrupt with Roger Federer making sure that it lasted 6-7 7-6 6-7 7-6 20-18 in the 1st Round!!!

Then again there is an argument for that as if an unexpected player wins the tournament, top players would probably still win more as the unexpected player would nnot have been watched until maybe around the Quarter-Finals...

A set amount it shall be I think! :D

Probably Marat if he could perfect doing it when the umpire's head was turned. Perhaps a quick "Nescafe" hand gesture (for those who don't know what that is it's a clench fisted wrist action signal) as he is unpacking his racket to start with...

I dont know, I think Marat is too volatile to be discreet - he would get spotted all the time.

I think Fed or Henman - they are considered such gents that no-one would suspect them and they would be able to do it at will...
