Title: Court, King, Evert and Navratilova.

Seles_fan - February 22, 2007 09:07 AM (GMT)
One tennis post before I go:

What was the order of the greatest to least greatest for these four players?

I think:
1. Court.
2. Navratilova, Evert joined.
3. King.

SerenaW19 - February 22, 2007 07:52 PM (GMT)
What about Graf?

T01 - February 23, 2007 01:56 PM (GMT)
where r u off to Selesfan?

Well, I think it is really hard to compare players when they have not played in the same era. Can't copmare court with Steffi..

On signles level, I think Steffi rules: winning all 4 GS at leaset 4 times each and also denfending them twice each minimum has not been done by the others!

Also people say when court won 11 Ausopen titles, she didn't really have much opposition!

GS2 - February 23, 2007 01:59 PM (GMT)
1-Navratilova
2-Graf
3-Evert
4-Court
5-King

Seles_fan - February 24, 2007 02:58 AM (GMT)
Graf is irrelavant to this discussion, because I only wanted to compare the four mentioned in the first post. But seeing that she's been brought up anyway, the only reason she won so many Slams was because of monica's stabbing.

And GS, how can you possibly put Margaret Court fourth?! She won more than the other three, and was still able to thrash Navratilova at Wimbledon when she was well past her best. She also had wins over Evert when she was past her best.

1 - Graf
2 - Navratilova
3 - Evert
4 - Court
5 - King

I don't really know enough about Helen Willis-Moody to include her. All that I really know is that she participated in 22 grand slams, winning 19 and finishing as runner-up in the other 3. Absolutely amazing definately, but we don't know factors such as how big the draw size at the grand slams was, whether any top players were banned etc.

Dark_Necrofear - March 5, 2007 03:26 PM (GMT)
I would have to say that the greatest is Navratilova....Considering her variety and expertise in singles and doubles it puts her margins ahead of everyone else!

BIG-TODGER - March 5, 2007 11:19 PM (GMT)
1 Navaratilova
2 Graf / Evert
3 Court
4 King

It's no fault of Grafs but you'ld have to say she would have won less if it were not for Monica's stabbing-that's partly why i didn't put her top, but it's very tough to choose between the top 4.
I think Evert suffers from having had a gentle persona off court but she was quite ruthless on court, and was very consistent for years-often able to blunt Navratilovas weapens.

Sorry in advance for churning out a load of boring stats, but I find it amazing that Graf is so high up on the list of virtually every type of record imaginable:
- 22 grand slam titles (2nd)
- 107 career titles (3rd)
- The only woman (or man) to have won each grand slam at least 4 times (on four different surfaces as well)
- 4 Australian Open titles (4th)
- 6 French Open titles (2nd)
- 7 Wimbledon titles (3rd)
- 5 US Open titles (4th)
- Achieved the calender grand slam in 1988, and non-calendar grand slam in 1993/94. She is the only woman to have held all 4 grand slams simultaneously, on two occasions.
- Achieved the French Open-Wimbledon double 4 times, more than any other woman (or man)
- The only woman (or man) to have successfully defended each of the grand slams at some point in her career (in fact she has successfully defended each grand slam twice)
- Spent 377 weeks as world no. 1 (1st)
- Had a run of 186 consecutive weeks as world no. 1 (1st)
- Finished 8 years as year end no. 1 (1st)
- 5 WTA Championship Titles (2nd)
- Her olympic gold medal makes her the only woman (or man) to have achieved the golden grand slam. She is the only woman to have achieved the career golden grand slam.
- Reached an unpredecented 13 consecutive grand slam finals from 1987-1990.

 What an amazing career

Apart from Court's overwhelming haul of slam titles, i'd still pick Graf anyway, for her Wimbledon wins and weeks at number 1 :D

Still, i think nav is the best ever though :)

SerenaW19 - March 6, 2007 09:07 PM (GMT)
I think Steffi's greatest achievement is definitely winning each Grand Slam AT LEAST four times! No one comes close except Margaret Court with 3 of each.

Im sorry but that's just unparalled

Thats why I think it would be so amazing if Serena won another FO as then she'd have two of each Slam, surpassed ONLY by Court and Graf. That said as I just mentioned on another thread, Id still prefer Serena won another Wimbledon to French Open as I regard that as the more important tournmament.

RT. - March 7, 2007 01:25 PM (GMT)
It's difficult to pick between Graf & Nav so I'll just say that Graf is the greatest singles player and Nav is the greatest overall player :)

liam_valid - March 7, 2007 01:50 PM (GMT)
Poor old selesfan didnt even want Graf included in this thread

I say Court, Navratilova, Evert then King, although if it is a bout who we like rather than who we think is best, then i pick Evert, Court, King then Navvy

Yes but it's pretty pointless having a thread discussing 4/5 of the greatest players of the last 50 years and then ignoring the 5th member of the group.

I think that's a very good way of deciding RT :D Im going with that verdict too :ok:
