Title: 2007 Year End Top 10
GS2 - February 13, 2007 01:08 PM (GMT)
With all the upsets we've had this year I thought I'd see who people thought would be in the top 10 at the end of this year.
In the poll you can vote 10 times to cover everyone you think will be there at the end of the year but also feel free to post your 10 here.
Mine (in no particular order) is
Henin
Sharapova
Mauresmo
Kuznetsova
Serena
Petrova
Jankovic
Vaidisova
Chakvetadze
Hingis
I suppose the most obvious player missing is Clijsters but with her post Antwerp schedule looking like Miami, Warsaw, Eastbourne, Wimbledon & her playing coy whether she'll play at all after the wedding (which will be just after Wimbledon) I can see her falling out of the top 10 at some point.
9mmSuzi - February 13, 2007 02:52 PM (GMT)
hmm.. interesting list GS2..... but personally,, Tatiana G doesn't maintain her form in a manner befitting a top 10 player...she is too topsy turvy so I wouldn't consider her at all.
Kim ...you can never tell...at least she works really hard.... and does play well in the slams...so hopefully considering french and wimbers she might climb up high... if she doesn't wear herself out on her honeymoon  she should be back to finish hard...
Elena is another funny one....but who knows...
But I do feel good about Jelena and Vaidisova..they can give patty and elena a good challenge...
but injuries...personal misfortunes anything at all can happen.

For the list of options I basically just gave the entire 20 minus Groenefeld, Li Na & Hantuchova in order to include Venus & Myskina (for obvious reasons) & Safarova (to reflect her good form).
Golovin is top 20 (albeit at 20) so that's why she is there (argubly she's be higher if it weren't for her injury problems last year.
Perhaps I should have included Li Na instead but to be honest I forgot about her!
Patty is already out of the top 10 and I really can't see her getting back though she'll probably hang around the top 15 for the forseeable future.
Yes who knows about Elena but with Patty out of the top 10 I see her as the most vulnerable of the established players in the top 10.
Kim again could go either way but at the moment she seems to be saying she's not going to play Roland Garros which won't help her ranking & if she doesn't her seeding will be affected for Wimbledon which will make it harder to make the later stages.
SerenaW19 - February 13, 2007 04:36 PM (GMT)
I voted for, in no particular order:
Serena
Justine
Venus
Maria
Petrova
Amelie
Kuzzy
Vaidisova
Hingis
Safina
I think Nicole will be more permanent member by the end of the year, Hopefully Safina's form will pick up; I think she will be dipping in and out all year but she seemed a likely choice to end the year in the top ten. Can see Dementieva getting upset more this year and with people like Serena  gaining points, it seems likely that Dem could just drop out. Kuzzy will manage to stay in. But unless she gets a lot better then I can see her dropping to 8 or so. Hingis should stay where she is.
Kim I haven't included because with all this madness about her skipping the French and not even playing after Wimbledon, plus her performances against Martina and Maria at the AO, I just don't think she cares anymore; and will be off the radar by the end of the year :(
I've put Venus in there as I have to believe she can overcome her injures and get back to form somehow. She played very, very well in patches last year. If she can make a successful comeback, I see no reason why her ranking shouldn't rise.

nope I've got nothing against the sisters, just they're not going to play enough to make the top ten
and Hingis has loads of points to make up, so yes she can get that high

they're not good enough to make the top ten me thinks. Most are over-rated, ie, Ivanovic, Peer, Golovin.

Hingis might play direly all year...you never know  I would say your top ten was quite plausbile :ok: I just wish more people would give Serena the benefit of the doubt :(

sorry dude, but I just don't see Serena doing much all year. Considering she's just pulled out of that tournament as well, the omens don't look good, but if she's does lay a whole year, then yeah I think she'll be in the top ten, and make the yecs :ok:

Federer-Williams - February 13, 2007 09:47 PM (GMT)
Bliv I seriously can't understand why you didn't out Serena in??
Okay Venus has no points in the race so far so that is alittle more understandable.
But with a Grandslam already and surely you must beleive she will enter some more events this year. She could maybe have made the top 10 already!!
Note: I think Hingis will be top 10 btw.

Ok after 14 responses this is what the top 10 would look like.
The definites
Henin, Sharapova & Hingis (all with 14 votes)
Mauresmo (with 13)
The pretty certains
Serena & Petrova (with 11)
Clijsters & Vaidisova (with 10)
Jankovic & Kuznetsova (with 9)
The long shots
Venus, Chakvetadze, Safina, Dementieva (with 4)
Safarova (with 3)
The highly unlikelys
Myskina (with 2)
Ivanovic, Golovin, Peer (with 1)
The no chance
Schnyder (with 0 votes!)
So we seem to all have a pretty similar view of how the top 10 will look - with the top 10 players far ahead of the others.
We also seem to think the top 10 will pretty much stay at it is with the only change from the current top 10 is Serena coming in, replacing Dementieva.
SerenaW19 - February 14, 2007 02:11 PM (GMT)
Yep no surprises really, I think Jankovic will go higher as she has no points to defend until Wimbledon practically, but she has an awful lot to defend from the US hardcourt swing on, so Im not 100% certain she can stay in the top ten all year. Although if she managed to qualify for the YECs this year then that might help; we'll have to see.
Justine will be in the top five Im sure. But I hope she can find form, as she's got quite a lot of points to defend coming up. I suppose she could pick up points on the clay court swing though and even if she doesn't get to both the Wimbledon and US Finals this year then she has quite a lot of points she could pick up in the american hardcourt swing. All in all though, I think it will be very interesting to watch her ranking fluctuate back and forth this year.
Also Serena too. I wonder how far she can go. She should be back in the top ten by the clay :)

I reckon Serena would beat Sharapova or Justine if she met them earlier on. They haven't been in good form of late.

Henin's ranking is bound to look a little odd this year.
She can pick up points in Doha & Miami but will lose Indian Wells.
She could actually pick up points over the clay season but then I can't see her improving (and probably not even matching) the RG, Eastbourne, Wimbledon Final streak she had last year.
As you say she can pick up points in the pre US Open hardcourt tournaments and also in the pre YEC indoor season.
An added complication to working out rankings this year is that they have massively upped the points for each tournament. (A grand slam win is now worth 1000 rather than the 700 it was last year) Which means anyone that has a poor start to the season will suffer even more than they normally would in rankings terms in the short term anyway.
For instance Sharapova's lead over Henin should only be around 300 points if they kept with last years points levels but is instead around 600!
SerenaW19 - February 14, 2007 02:41 PM (GMT)
Yes I noticed that Grand Slams were worth so much more now. Should help Serena anyway
ObL!v!0N - February 14, 2007 02:43 PM (GMT)
yeah Serena has 1030 points in da race, so she got the 30 from the tasmania tournie
the point thing is annoying, I don't think it's fair that players should lose points, when they work so hard to gain them
