Title: Valentine's Cakes

Nick Havoc - February 12, 2007 03:12 AM (GMT)
I mentioned to a couple of you that we do a Valentine's Banquet at my church each year. It's put on by the men of the church in honour of the ladies. One of the traditions is a cake auction of cakes baked by the men. The money collected always goes to some sort of mission project. I promised to reveal my cake on here, so here it is:

And the description:

QUOTE
ADAM’S SWEET REVENGE

Eve tempted Adam with the forbidden fruit.

Now it’s the men’s turn to tempt the women.

The cake is an Apple Spice Cake, baked fresh from scratch this morning, with Granny Smith apples and chopped pecans.  It is frosted with homemade Cream Cheese Frosting.

The tree atop the cake is all edible.  The trunk and branches are made from modeling chocolate (semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted and mixed with a little corn syrup to make it moldable).  To give a little more strength to the trunk, the chocolate is molded around a section of Tootsie Roll.  The leaves and apples are formed from marzipan.

Another of my favourites was this cake, depicting Moses parting the Red Sea.

I have to admit, though, that as my cake sat out a while and warmed up to room temperature, the chocolate softened a bit and my tree lost a couple branches. :(

Oh no! Must say I liked the tree - very artistic. :( Where did you learn to make cakes like that?

Hmmm. I could probably do that. I'm sure I'll have a couple months to work with . . .

Good stuff! Gotta say yours is the best Nick. When you say, yu bought the carousel, do you mean to say that when you take the cake you then have to sell it? So Mrs Havoc won't have the chance to be tempted by your apple tree?? I'd have taken it home if I was you after all the work that has gone into that!

Nick Havoc - February 12, 2007 04:15 PM (GMT)
Yep. My apple tree went home with someone else. It was looking a bit more ragged by that time, with some of its branches having fallen, but at church the next day, the lady who bought it at the auction said she was able to reattach them with some toothpicks and it looked good as new. (I asked her how the cake tasted, but she said she hadn't cut into it yet.)

Maybe I'll bake another one for Mrs. Havoc, but I'm not sure about building another one of those trees. I do have some leftover marzipan, though, so I could make a few more apples. B)

Well, at that point it looked a bit more like a post-Katrina tree . . .

One of the other cakes, which is not pictured, was called the "Road Home" cake. There's a big program going on now, called the "Louisiana Road Home" program to issue grants to those people trying to rebuild in the New Orleans area. It's been the subject of a lot of criticism because of the slow progress and red tape involved. The "Road Home" cake was decorated with a bunch of little toy cars on top, merging into a big traffic jam.

If you've ever been to the US, the major limited-access highways are called the "Interstate" system and are usually referred to as I-## (whatever the number of the highway is). The two that run through the Baton Rouge area are I-10 and I-12. There were several tongue-in-cheek road signs made up on the cake. My favourite was a sign with various directional arrows, showing the ways to "I-10", "I-12" and "I-Give Up".

Hey, Mobes! Long time no post . . . ;) I was hoping you'd get a look at this thread. As you can see, I went with another Biblical theme this year. One of my alternate ideas was to do a "Moses parting the waters" cake, but someone else did that, so I'm glad I went a different way. Not sure what to do for next year, but I've got plenty of time to come up with a new inspiration . . .
