Title: HIV Cure Claim??!
Description: From the BBC

How morons like this get in power is beyond me...
Why make claims as bizarre as this when you are given millions of people throughout the world such false hope??!!
Grrrr ... Mkaes me angry.

A claim by Gambian President Yahya Jammeh that he can cure Aids in three days has been lambasted by a leading South African HIV/Aids specialist.
"I'm astonished. The danger of a president standing up [to say this] is shocking," Jerry Coovadia told the BBC.

Mr Jammeh said last month he had begun treating 10 patients on Thursdays with secret medicinal herb ingredients.
His health minister backs his claims, saying in trials so far patients had gained weight and physically improved.

"A response within three to 10 days and a three-day course is almost inconceivable for a disease like HIV/Aids," said Prof Coovadia, who heads the HIV research team at the University of KwaZulu Natal and is a member of South Africa's Treatment Action Campaign.
He said that science was many years away from finding a cure "so the fact that someone announces a cure like this is exceedingly difficult to accept".

President Jammeh, who says he can also cure asthma, made his announcement to a gather of foreign diplomats last month.
"I can treat asthma and HIV/Aids... Within three days the person should be tested again and I can tell you that he/she will be negative," he said in a statement.
"I am not a witch doctor and in fact you cannot have a witch doctor. You are either a witch or a doctor."
Gambian Health Minister Tamsir Mbow says the herbal medicines are taken orally and applied to the body.

"We cannot actually tell you the type of herbs we are using presently, it will be known to the whole world later on," Dr Mbow told the BBC.
One of the patients currently undergoing the treatment is Gambian university lecturer Ousman Sowe.
"I've noticed I've increased weight substantially over the last 10 days. I am no longer suffering from constipation, but we have yet to receive result of the tests," he told the BBC.
"I have 100% confidence in the president and I'm taking the medication with all confidence.

But Mr Coovadia said it was tragic that The Gambia had a "political environment that allows a minister of health and a president to violate every foundation of science and public health."
"The entire exercise is circumscribed by secrecy - that's not how science works," he said.
It would be impossible to measure the negative impact of Mr Jammeh's claims, but it could lead to risky sexual behaviour, instead of following preventative advice, he said.
The World Health Organisation told the BBC it did not wish to comment on the issue at this stage.
Last year, South Africa's health minister came in for severe criticism for promoting a diet of garlic and beetroot to those with HIV, while not rolling out the anti-retroviral drugs which are the only recognised treatment.
South Africa has now reversed its controversial advice.

Indeed quite sick, but then there are a lot of twisted african leaders still unfortunately, most notably the despicable Robert Mugabe, who, in many ways IMO, has been extremely fortunate there are wars in other places, otherwise I have a feeling The British/ Americans/whoever would have gone itno the country by now and got him out of there by brute force!

You are right Africa is such a beautiful continent unfortunately for the last 700 years has been ruled by people who are for them selves only. Thier leaders use the countries resources to try and quench thier greed, they bring thier kids to uni's here while they destroy thier country with war and famine. Then now there is this ridiculous claim.

Can you imagine Tony Blair making such a claim?

No-one say yes to the last question by the way, love or loathe Tony Blain! roflmao

The leaders don't 'lead' their countries at all either, as you say they just scrounge every bit of money out of their position.

I know a lot of people have strong views over Tony Blair, but he deserves a kings ransom for the job he has on his hands! I can never ever understand why Newspaper/media/people in general moan about him having swish holidays, nice houses etc. - he's the prime minister, he deserves it, it's one of the hardest jobs going!

Especially when you see what Premiership footballers get

lol.
Wouldn't surprise me if he did on his way out just to wind people up. I think Blair has been hard done by in some ways in his time in power, Britain to me today seems a much more comfortable place to live in I feel. (Bar the obvious terrorism thing and I don't think we can solely point the finger at Blair for that)

Where's Dark? He could give us an insight into at least South Africa's stance on an issue like this as I think he lives there.

I'm glad there is someone else in the world who actually sympathises with Tony Blair - IMO one of Britains best prime ministers :)

Yes making claims like this is very irresponsible indeed. It offers false hope to sufferers and coudl encourage people to be less careful with sex if they think they can be cured with a few herbs in 3 days :o

I agree on Mugabe, but does he have any oil or stuff that the US woudl like to get their hands on? ? The big powers in the West only seem to back a humanitarian war if they can get anythign out of it!

I know. These nations who pretend about their motives for wars make me sick. Pretending that you are fighting for some noble cause when all you really want to do is further your own gain is terrible. Humanitarian effort may ass! Bunch of damned evil liars and hypocrites more like.
