The underdog trounced the top seed in straight sets. Just wondering if it will be the same in the men's side.
LDF - January 27, 2007 04:15 AM (GMT)
Serena :yahoo:  :yahoo:
A simply outstanding performance to win Grand Slam no.8
28 winners to just 11 unforced errors...she was hitting the ball incredibly well and exposed Maria's poorer movement. She needed to serve at a high standard and she did exactly that, getting 67% of first serves in and she was invariably bossing play.
:D
The Dav - January 27, 2007 04:20 AM (GMT)
Serena!!!!! :yahoo: I'm so happy! What a demolition! She truly is the best of her generation, no question
I now don't feel so bad about Lindsay's loss in the '05 final
LDF - January 27, 2007 04:22 AM (GMT)
Poor Maria, she looked devastated afterwards; she did well not to burst into tears, because you could see her welling up.
But she still managed to give a wonderful speech :ok:
Serena's was great too, and it was very touching when she mentioned Yetunde.

I know, that was really touching when Serena mentioned Yetunde :( Now doubt Vee was going crazy :D
Maria's speech was nice, except for her dig about the roof

That absolutely frightened the life out of me. How can someone play like that who's only play 4 tournaments last year? :o :o
OMG! Everyone's gonna have to step up a gear ...... again :(

How do you think a 100% fit Justine would have done today against Serena?
Would she have been better than Sharapova? Would there have been a better match and would Serena have been able to play like that?
Queen Justine - January 27, 2007 04:49 AM (GMT)

She would have absolutely done better than Sharpie, Juju is a much smarter player, and she has back-up plans, that's what Maria needs to work on, Justine retrieves better and gets into position quicker, and she also had the net option, so I'm sure she would have frustrated Serena...
To be honest though, I still see Serena beating her in straight sets in that form, sorry QJ :) The serve is too good...

Yeh, it's that bloody serve
No one can touch a "Serena Serve".
As much as I dislike Serena, I cannot praise her tennis enough .... she truly is amazing!!
I wonder if the outcome would have been different though if Linds, JuJu, Mary, et al were all in the draw? Plus, if Kuzzy and Mauresmo would have still been in there. Would Serena have still won it?
Oh damn, what a stupid question, of course she would have

Mind you, I haven't seen this match she played against Dementieva in Fed Cup, that was apparently breath-taking :o
I think with her form today, against Jankovic, and maybe against Vaidisova, she would have been tough to beat, but in her other matches she was vulnerable, Shahar came so close :o So I think Linds, Juju et al could have sorted her out in that form...
I actually think this will motivate Justine seeing this, her and Serena (and Vee) are clearly the top players when playing their best, sorry Maria roflmao

I can send you a copy of the DVD of Justine's Fed Cup match against Demented. I've got it on my computer and I can put it on DVD for you if you want. It's not a good copy because it's from Belgium and someone DVD'd it and it's not so good, but I can do that for you if you want to see some absolutely amazing exhibition tennis.
I've never ever seen her play like that ........ it purely was a masterclass.
Anyway, let me know.

When I pick my jaw off the floor, perhaps I'll be able to post coherently. I had expected Sharapova to win, with a fight from Serena as she invariably gives. I didn;t expect a demolition of this sort.
Congratulations to Serena! Good Job!!!
Dark_Necrofear - January 27, 2007 06:52 AM (GMT)
CHAIRMAN,you should just shut it because of your rude and disgusting remarks you made about Serena.Myself and SW19were the only 2 that believed in her!
Wakeupandsmell - January 27, 2007 06:58 AM (GMT)
I really don't know what to say. I didn't watch the match because I thought Sharapova was just going to blow Serena off the court. I have had the good fortune of watching the highlights and Serena appears to have been 1)Incredibly hungry for this title. She had the "eye of the tiger" the whole night.
2) Even when Sharapova played a point into Serena's body, Serena didn't get upset at all - just gave her the "You are a bi-yatch and I'm gonna kick your behind" look. roflmao Her body language screamed aggression from start to finish.
3) The backhand winner at match point was quite nice to watch.
4) 11 UE from Serena. This must be one of the lowest for her ever!
Good job, Serena!! Great, great work! roflmao

Flaming heck dark, relax, its called reverse support :D . You see each time I support serena she loses, therefore, i did the opposite and it worked and I love to wind SW19 up roflmao . Truthfully, after the Nadia match I knew this was not impossible but I didnt believe it would happen after the demolishing of Kim.
But come on, I am a serena believer through and through. otherwise what the crack will i be doing up this late.

OMG GO SERENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely brilliant, what a scary peformance from Serena!!! :o she was even surpassing Fed in brillance tonight, absolutely outstanding. her returns were like :o :o and her movement was tremendous, taking all the angles away from Maria, the Russian just looked so below-par compared to Serena at this level, and who can blame her. Serena at her best, is probably up there with graf and Navratilova. She's that damn good :D
Her speech was funny and moving. Her comments about being a 'bad student ' roflmao Even Oracene had to show some emotion there
Bet Venus is still jumping up and down at home roflmao
Her words regarding Yetunde :( But also very dignified and moving.

I have no words, I was just so happy when she won, so emotional; and her speech as well nearly had me in tears. Ok she may not have worked as hard as it for everyone else in the draw; but she is so talented and has been written off so many times Im just so glad she told her detractors to stuff it and her talent is no longer being wasted :D
Those of us that kept the faith can now bask in Serena's glory and everyone else can  to the unquestionably best player of her generation.
