Title: Gonzo v. Haas
barrystar - January 26, 2007 09:32 AM (GMT)
An on-fire Gonzo is leading Haas 6-1 2-0 in what sounds like a Federer-esque performance.
Looks like he will get through and, if he keeps up form like he has shown this tournament the final may be competitive, even not the foregone conclusion that everyone is suggesting.
I would like Fed to win, but let's hope that whoever wins has to sweat for it on Sunday.
barrystar - January 26, 2007 09:46 AM (GMT)
Gonzo serving at 4-2 in the second set, already a set up (6-1).
It is symptomatic of Fed's domination of the male game that, unlike yesterday, there is hardly anyone on the forum, and those that are seem uninterested in this game - seemingly because we all think it is close to an irrelevance given the overwhelming expectation that Fed will carry all before him on Sunday.
Nick Cica - January 26, 2007 09:54 AM (GMT)
When you watch Gonzalez, it doesn't seem at all unreasonable to think he could give Federer a great fight and even cause an upset. Then you look at the statistics (9-0 H2H, winning only 2 sets, in both of which Federer served for the set!), remember Madrid (7-5, 6-1, 6-0) and Basel (6-3, 6-2, 7-6), and think well, it's a foregone conclusion.
Logically, it should be an absolutely tremendous match by two exciting players. But most of us expect a drubbing.

Hi Barry..thanks for the update about this match...I am definitely interested on it but I had the pleasure to see Gonzo against Hewitt and the way in which he was able to destroy Hewitt simply was a clear signal for the rest of the tournament: I really hope he will arrive at the final fit and fully confident.
I like his Tennis and his fighting spirit :) and I am sure FED would have to face a difficult match this time.
It is always great to have a competitive final..So why not a 5 sets final for a change
PS: now he is up 2 sets and he broke Haas already in the third.. :yikes: :yikes:
Andy1073 - January 26, 2007 10:10 AM (GMT)
Gonzo 6-1 6-3 4-0 and giving Haas the hiding of his life.
If Gonzalez brings this game to the final then it could be interesting...might give Federer something to think about.
Andy1073 - January 26, 2007 10:15 AM (GMT)
Correction - 6-1 6-3 4-1
and now 6-1 6-3 5-1

I agree with that. We see Fed doll out a thrashing to Roddick and believe that we are seeing the real thing. Gonzalez's thrashing of Haas (assuming that is how it ends) seems of less weight because you then look at their H2H with Fed to see that the last time either of them beat him was Haas at the Aus Open 2002.
Gonzalez improved during 2006, yet still lost out to Fed heavily, but seems to have improved further into 2007.
Here's hoping that he really has narrowed the gap (with apologies to Roddick's copyright on that phrase :P ).

chetanpv you will just never stop...Man why do you want so hard FED losing???
Was Mirka Vavrinec your fiance??? roflmao roflmao
Or it is just this (boring at the end) question of GOAT and the fact that by winning the AO he will be ven closer to Pete's numbers??

A sensational match! Gonzo took Haas apart in the same way as Fed took Roddick apart. Fed will have a fight on his hands on Sunday!
Big Al - January 26, 2007 10:43 AM (GMT)
What a performance from Gonzo , but its overshadowed by Federers yesterday. But looks like it should be a tough enough match for Roger. Im sure he would want a challenge , and from the fans point of view about time we had a 5 set classic.
(Roger winning of course B) )

Yep, he also took Hewitt and Nadal apart. A brilliant performance in its own right .
But Fed to win
Gav - January 26, 2007 12:03 PM (GMT)
Wow, Gonzalez looks the part to perhaps step up and challenge Federer for hard courts throughout the season maybe? I guess we will find out on Sunday.
chetanpv - January 26, 2007 12:08 PM (GMT)
TV.
I dont have anything against Fed. Gonzo had some 40 winners and 3 or 4 UE, stats better than Federer. If he can keep this up in the finals, anything can happen.
The Murray Nadal match was the best of the tournament. Hope the final is better than that.

Can somebody pass the salt please. I feel the need for a pinch of it with the above statement...

Sometimes Andy I just cannot believe that he is the same Chet who was able to post:

| Sampras's records will never be broken. As long as the human race doesn't suffer extinction or till the sun becomes a red giant and engulf this planet. |
And which behaviour you described so well in this magnificent sentence:

I guess than, like for the heroes of his favourite movie, i.e. Matrix, chetanpv has been reloaded at least in this board..But be carefull, outside he continues to behave so to fulfil the main assumptions which lead you to write your famous sentence. roflmao roflmao
It is just too funny (or sad) at the end :D : When this guy will decide finally to grow up
