Title: Winning a slam without dropping a set

MrInvisible - January 25, 2007 10:23 AM (GMT)
When was the last time a male player won a slam without dropping a set? I'm sure Federer hasn't done this yet, and this is a stat I'm really intrigued about. Any statisticians know the answer to this one?

Yes, Borg at French Open in 1980. The previous time was Borg at French Open in 1978. The time before, Borg at Wimbledon 1976

Quite greedy of Borg keeping all those sets like that.

what, fed don't own all the records by now :o

It would be funny if Fed got that record at the AO first before Wimb though he has hardly dropped ANY sets at WImbledon compared to Sampras/Borg.

Yes, Borg in '80 RG was the last time. It's quite a rare feat and it's amazing that Borg was able to accomplish it at both RG and Wimbledon. I doubt Fed will ever match that. He might do it at Wimbledon some day, but I'd be surprised to see him make it through seven rounds at the French w/o dropping a set.

I make it 5 sets lost in the last 4 years at Wimbledon, compared to 84 won.

Probably came closest last year when he didn't drop a set till the third set of the final (and that on a tiebreak)

Actually Fed is lucky he didn't drop two sets, as Rafa could've won the second as well.

I think in terms of dominance of sets won/lost at Wimbledon so far Federer hasn't really been anymore dominant than Borg we'll have to wait and see if he can win it in straights this year :D

Actually, Borg lost far more sets at Wimbledon than Federer (with the glorious exception of 1976 when he didn't lose any.) 3 of Borg's finals went to 5 sets and there were matches against Amaya, Amrtiraj, Edmonson, Gerualitis (and others possibly) that also went the distance. Federer so far has dropped one set each to Fish, Hewitt, Roddick, Kiefer and Nadal in the last four years

So how many sets has Borg lost then, it would be fair to compare how many Borg lost in his first four Wimbledons, it can't have been much more than 7/8 maybe?
