Title: Federer v Roddick
chetanpv - January 24, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
In anticipation of this match, I was making a list of the permutations and combinations needed for Roddick to win this match (this is a follow up of my post on the beep board).
After extensive analysis, there are two critical milestones that Roddick needs to accomplish to win this match:
1.Win the first set: In almost all of their encounters, Federer has blasted Roddick in the first set making him always play from behind (expect the 2004 wimby final). The only three times Andy has won the first set (2003 toronto, 2006 shanghai and 2007 kooyong), he has "almost" gone on to beat Federer. If Roddick wins the first set, 50% of the task is complete.
2. Win the critical tie-break: Once again there has been a decisive TB is almost every match that has been won by Federer turning the match in his favor. There would positively be one tonight as well and Roddick needs to win it.
The final prediction is 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (decisive TB) & 6-4 or 7-5 win to Roddick.
Any other opinions.

Cogent analysis as usual chet. If Roddick were to win, I'd certainly envisage it being something like that. I doubt he could win in 3, and I don't think he has the energy to emerge victorious from a 5 setter - he needs a hell of a lot of adrenaline to worry Fed, last time he pushed him over 5 sets he got exhausted at the end of the third :yikes:
He's come on even more since then too, and if he keeps serving well, chooses to serve volley on lots of the big points and doesn't get tight like he did at the Masters, he can certainly win this. Sadly I don't see him bringing all these 3 together tonight and I reckon Fed'll win in 4

I cant see Roddick winning this match unless he has his best serving day ever and even then i thing fed would probalbly still win it but i suppose if roger is below par for once then roddick could produce a shock.

Yeah, as much as I'd like to see Roddick win one, I predict more like: Roddick gets broken once in the first set, fights his heart out in the second with some chances to take control of the set, but gets edged in a tiebreak, then collapses in the third, having nothing left.
6-4 7-6 6-2 to Federer
*Prove me wrong, Andy.*

This match is going to be very very interesting. I question where Fed's mind is right now. His quarter final made him look under par and not really there. Is his mind already looking at the clay court season and the one tournament he really wants to win this year, the French? Especially with Nadal looking a little bit found out...... I could be wrong, but I think this all of this might work in Roddick's favour. Roddick is primed, on form and Connors has added some much needed stell to his mental attitude.
I see a tough match. I will go against the grain and say Roddick is going to win this. Sorry Fed fans. I hope I am wrong, I really want to see to see him win the Slam this year.

I don't think Roddick need worry about Gonzo just yet Tenez. I know Gonzo's in great form, but if he worries too much about him, he might slip up in his semi-final.
petalp - January 24, 2007 10:46 PM (GMT)
Should be a good match, if their last 2 meetings are anything to go by (the USO and Masters, excl exo).. but Fed should win, possibly in 4, and no doubt the odd tie-break thrown into the mix :)
Go Roger!!! :yahoo: :yahoo:

Sorry wise but I don't think they play for the 3rd spot in slams, do they?
Wise_Analyst - January 24, 2007 11:01 PM (GMT)
Don't think so Tenez; more's the shame for Haas. He could have done with a morale-boosting straight sets victory after losing to Gonzo and watching him battle it out with Roddick in the final.

Feds doesn't look happy out there yet. He hasn't found a great deal of rhythm. This is as much down to Roddick's pressure as anything at the moment...

Last few points (on the Roddick service game) looked like normal service has resumed..... for the time being at least.
Fairly wussy BH into the net by Roddick - it would have been massacred had it limped over - then nice reflexes at the net.
I like Roddick, not least because he is so gracious in victory and defeat, but I want Fed to get this one on his march to the record books.
drakey01 - January 25, 2007 09:20 AM (GMT)
On the stats side, once again Fed is out ace-ing Roddick (6-2), in that last game it was clear how much Roddick struggles with Fed's serve.
Lex - January 25, 2007 09:20 AM (GMT)
Fed seems to have picked his game up a tad. Rod might be on a bit of an uphill struggle here. He's playing really well, but Fed is now just a tad better
barrystar - January 25, 2007 09:21 AM (GMT)
They just showed the stats and Roddick has only got 6/13 at the net. He has got to do something about that - almost two games. If that was to be a key part of his strategy he really is in trouble.
