Sharapova is bumped to Lenglen whilst Zvonareva-Safina open on Chatrier?
GS2 - May 26, 2006 04:23 PM (GMT)
Interesting line up!
I suppose they have to space out the big matches.
I wonder how the BBC will cover this - hopefully they will show an even split of mens & womens matches.
Zvonareva v Safina could be good.

I suppose the thinking is that Zvonareva v Safina will be the closer match.

Well I seriously doubt the All-England club would put, say, Clijsters/Henin on Court One in favour of Zvonareva-Safina

No but they've got to give everyone a good match to watch and they have to spread them out across three days instead of two so they probably don't want to load all the big stars onto one court.

Hmm, good point...
As GS2 said, I guess the committee think the all-Russian match will be closer.

And just to see Baltacha crumble
That was only put on because the Centre Court schedule had finished early though, and Court 2 (?) still had a couple of matches to go, I believe...

Do you really think it'll be a good match though GS? Didn't Zvonareva get thrashed by Oprandi 6-0 6-1 recently
Personally, I wouldn't be getting out of bed to see that one :D

FROM ROLAND GARROS - Maria Sharapova re-injured her right ankle in practice on Friday at Roland Garros, went to the doctor and after three hours got the good news – no fracture. The very bad news is that despite requesting a Monday start, she was denied and now is scheduled to face Mashona Washington later on Sunday on Suzanne Lenglen. She’s not happy about it and there’s still a chance that she won’t play. Even if she does, she’s going to have a hard time moving and could have used another day to heal. The tournament is taking a huge risk here by asking one of the tour’s top draws to play hurt, as Washington could counterpunch her out in the first round. But its clear that the French Tennis Federation wants to put on a very good show on its inaugural “First Sunday” of this now 15 day event.

Ooops, not looking good for maria is it
I think Maria could go out here if she's as bad as she says she is........This does not look good at all, especially with Wimbledon just round the corner...
The Dav - May 27, 2006 09:15 PM (GMT)
Maria should just withdraw, if she can't win RG fully fit, she has no chance with an injury, and especially with Wimbledon coming up, she doesn't want to pointlessly damage her ankle...
LDF - May 28, 2006 09:54 AM (GMT)
Safina takes the first set 6-3 against Zvonareva...
welshboy91 - May 28, 2006 12:05 PM (GMT)
Safina becomes the first winner at this years RG beating Zvonareva 6-3 7-5

Congrats to Dinara - a very solid performance :)
I love her backhand...excellent preparation and racquet-head acceleration. It wasn't the cleanest performance (a few too many errors, especially off the forehand), but it was certainly good enough.
LDF - May 28, 2006 05:09 PM (GMT)
Mashona is 5-4 up in the 2nd set against Maria, after losing the first set 6-2...

Good to have you here anyway :D
Hopefully Mashona will win, it's a bit annoying that medical time-outs always occur when you're down though, eh?

She has hit some lovely winners in that set, she is pushing maria wide to her forehand which is exposing maria's backhand wing.
Mashona may not win the match but Maria just doesnt look like a challenger to the big guns at this years RG...

Nope, after the second - the medical timeout actually started whilst Mashona was off court.
teutonicplague - May 28, 2006 05:35 PM (GMT)
Mashona is making maria look very ordinary out here, a reasonably comfortable hold and Mashona is ahead in the match for the first time since the first game...
