These seeds are dropping like hot potatoes. I guess it is left with Jelena to restore the order.

LDF - January 21, 2007 08:20 AM (GMT)
Serena
She played very well - she was by far the more aggressive of the pair, hitting much more winners than Jankovic. Her serve, especially in the second set, was at a good standard, and her movement continues to improve.
At 2-1 in the 2nd set she hit 2 spectacular shots; a half-volley backhand winner from behind her and a wonderful angled backhand pass
Jankovic didn't perform to the best of the ability, and she was simply outplayed.
Amelie
So passive! She was brushing up on the back of the ball too much - no clean hitting and Safarova pounced all over the short balls. Credit to Lucie on playing a confident, attacking match, but Amelie was poor today.
I'm not too surprised Svetlana lost to Shahar actually, though I haven't seen the match or the statistics so I can't really comment.
dl04 - January 21, 2007 10:56 AM (GMT)
Amelie, Amelie
In full 'loop' mode  That forehand is abysmal at times, no pace, no real sense of direction, just floating mid-court balls. Serve was patch also. Movement was great, but didnt have the groundstrokes to back it up.
Safarova was almost Lindsay-esque against Momo, doing everything Lindsay used to do against the ineffectual spins of the Frenchwoman. Safarova's groundstrokes hit so flat and so close to the lines, just much more intent from the Czech. Momo's passive play even gave lucie net oppurtunites which just illustrated how dour Mauresmo's play was this morning.
Serena was completely dominat against Jankovic :D :yahoo:
That forehand has sharpened up completelty, much better footwork around the shot and she's finishing her shot a lot better, not reaching for it with the arm too much. just great, more compact swings.
jankovic as you say LDF, just was never allowed to play better, Serena was attacking everything in sight, and what a fearful sight is Serena galloping into the net? Absolutely superb from the twice former champ
dl04 - January 21, 2007 11:12 AM (GMT)
Also Safina out :(
I like Li Na though, such a compact athlete on the tour, has such great sound technique, obviously been well-drilled in the strict tennis lessons in china. Looking at the stats, Li just overwhelming Safina. 8 winners for Safina, and Li with 3 times as much at 24 :o Hardly the stat i was expecting. Li really continuing that Sydney form where she took Kim to the brink.
And Dementieva :( losing to vaidisova in tame circumstances. 7 double faults, only 8 wimnners, just nothing to write home about at all. vaidisova to her credit hitting 27 winners, but where was the fight from Elena?
petalp - January 21, 2007 12:45 PM (GMT)
Oh boy, what happened in the women's section?!! :yikes:
I mean, Serena winning, whilst not what I expected, not entirely unsurprising given Serena's momentum..
But Mauresmo, Dementieva, Kuznetsova and Safina going out??
Well, my predictions were well and truly stuffed!! roflmao

Exactly, she came out firing and went to a 3-0 lead, the match was never really in doubt after that, she was just too agressive and hit to many winners compared to Jankovic.
Also as LDF her serve while it patchy in the 1st set was proficient in the 2nd!
Also as dl said her forehand is so much better, she hardly hit any UEs off it, very steady. I thought her movement was excellent as well, she chased down every ball. Some people clearly judge too much by appearances as Serena is moving to a top ten standard at the moment.
Can't wait for the next match  :yahoo:
  Well done Serena you LEGEND!!!
