Title: Hewitt knocked out by superb Gonzalez

That's the end of the tournament for the Australian. I saw the end of the match, and Hewitt wasn't playing badly. Gonzo is going to be a real test for Blake, that much is certain.

I'm happy for him. He was doing really well at the end of last year, and it looks like his good form continues. I'd like to see Gonzo make the top 8 and the YEC this year; he only narrowly missed out in 2006, after all.

Agreed! :ok:

I saw the final set too. I love watching Gonzo play! He used to be "crash! bang! wallop!" which whilst being thoroughly entertaining, meant that he wasn't putting his skills to use in terms of being a good matchplayer.

But now he seems a lot more canny, picking the best moment to pull the trigger on those  forehands, and with a solid backhand. He's putting the slice to good use, rather than topspinning most things as he used to do. Come credit to his coach Larry Sefanki there.

An now, he certainly is well within the group of players who are likely to battle it out for top 5 status in 2007. Good for him!!

I recall him being interviewed during Wimbledon in 2005, where it was clear that he is a great guy. Of course he is a big hero in Chile ever since he won Olympic gold with Nicholas Massu..

And whilst James Blake was superb against Moya and Kuznetsov, he was below par against Ginepri today, and a little fortunate to win in 3 decidedly average sets. James will need to raise his game if he is to do well against Gonzo, that's for sure.

I feel really bad for hewitt he is a real fighter and you could really see how much that loss hurt him i just hope he can have a good year despite that result.COME ON ROCKY. :D

Oh, I'm really pleased for Gonzo. he had such a good end of last year, and I was really disappointed that he didn't make the end-of-year cup. I didn't see the match, but i'm glad he's playing well! :D

*dances through this thread too*

no offence, but a Hewitt loss always makes me boogie :yahoo:

(unless its all down to injury - dont wish any player that)

lleyton has to be disappointed. and he certainly can't be relishing a looming clay court season. he needs to find some new rhythm or this could be a really bad year.

Hewitt losing is  time.
He's not that popular it seems...

SerenaW19 - January 20, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
He's more popular on this board than Nasty Nalbandian at least :D

No offence but I share with pleasure the "No more Hewitt" dance with Pebs...

Thanks Gonzo   : Moreover I like a lot your Tennis so...

I did not see the match but I hope really Gonzo can stay as much as he wants in the AO . Well might be not: Blake should move at least a step further  ...

Anyway, I am sure it will be a great match between the two..

why is Hewitt so disliked anyway? I think he's alright

SerenaW19 - January 20, 2007 10:41 PM (GMT)
He's better than some thats for sure

I think a lot of people don't like him for in his heyday when his agressive comon, was a bit too much for most people. And that tends to hang on even today.

I expect if he did a Hingis and "retired" for three years and then came back he would be more appreciated

I've just read that Gonzo made just 2 unforced errors in total in the first 2 sets of his match against Hewitt! Wow!!

Yelena - January 21, 2007 06:36 AM (GMT)
Hewitt disappointed me with his play. He makes too many unforced errors. :yikes:

RafaRoastLamb - January 22, 2007 12:40 AM (GMT)
Go Gonzo!!!! Love him, love him, love him. Did I say I loved him??!!

He won't beat FedEx though... Not yet, anyway.

So do I. I often hear that it's the fist pumps and stuff they dont; like, saying it is macho and agressive BUt the same people seem to liek Nadal and hsi fist pumping with that groin thrusting is repulisve to me! roflmao

I can understand people disliking players for no good reason, or mayeb a good one, but failing to acknowledge their marvellous tennis talent is not really on, and celbrating their down falls is nasty. In this case, hewit played a very good match, his opponent was tough and played a great match too. He'll be back, he's made fo stern stuff. :ok:
