Title: Murray's Progress - 3 Sets win over Verdasco
Description: what are his chances now with Chela?

SuperBRAT - January 18, 2007 12:22 PM (GMT)
I was impressed by the scoreline today as I was worried about Verdasco. If he could tighten his game up and play a better shot selection and tactical game he'd surely be a top 10 contender? Great shotmaker and so much pace on the ball. I thought Murray did well to play the big points well, but was a bit concerned about his passiveness in rallies at times. he played some great passing shots though, but they were risky! Still a dream result really, but not his best showing or a pretty match, but I guess like coach Brad Gilbert's book, he foudn a way to win ugly. And save energy with a 3 setter. Well done, but it think Andy has to up the ante next match. Chela is tough and I understand a bit of a grinder who can cope with the heat and five sets. And if he got through that and Nadal was still in, that woudl be very tough - Nadal is looking fit at the moment.

Any thoughts?

I reckon Murray's chances against Chela aren't bad at all. Against Nadal ... we'll have to see.

I think my prognosis for Murray against Chela is that I'm 'cautiously optimistic' - Murray's developed mentally and tactically since their match last year. However, Chela is a dogged competitor, and seems to play well on Rebound Ace. When he gets into a rhythm he has a very low error rate, and like SB says, he thrives in the heat, and in the 5 set matches.

Its a match-up that doesn't suit Murray as much as the more aggressive hit-and-miss style of Fernando Verdasco.

This is a match that Murray won't coast through - he's got to be prepared for a battle here - he can still win in straight sets, but he'll have to play a much tighter game to do that.

We shouldn't get ahead of ourselves and think of Nadal v Murray yet. Besides, who does Nadal have to play next - anyone dangerous?

wawrinka

'cautiously optimistic' is the way to go on this one for sure. murray has improved, chela has played well here and he did beat murray here last year...yeah yeah i know, murray is a different player now. still.
i still think murray should win but i would not be that surprised by chela winning, especially if the match goes the distance.

I'm fairly confident about his match against Chela. The only thing I'm worried about is what time the match will be held and what the heat will be like. If Murray can avoid any physical problems, I think he'll come through.

I really am chuffed for andy that he beat verdasco in straight sets i thought it might had gone to 5 but andy did really well.Chela could be tough but andy is a class above him really but the round of 16 against nadal will be very tough.

nothing wrong with winning ugly - its the winning bit that counts! for Andy, hope I get to see him in action soon, just any tennis would do actually! I soooo hoped the power would be cut at school today so we could be sent home but....

Mind you, got home and discovered the power had been cut here! I cant have made it clear enough when I was wishing!

Oh no, how odd. Have you got digital co sall his matches are on there whatever time of day or night they are. The main coverage is only from 8.30am until close of play though, say 1.30 -2.30pm BST. Murray's match was replayed this morning, despite beign on at 3am - still I'm glad as I tried to stay awake and failed.

I have the technology - but I also have a job :(

cant stay up late for love nor money if I have to get up at 7.00 and am out of the house just after 8, and its all done and dusted by the time I come home.

thats why I was hoping for a powercut today, so I could come home and watch :)

It was not worth staying up for imo. Some of the points were cringe worthy. I got that fed up i put the mint on itv instead!!!

I know you wont; be able to stay home and watch live, but you could record it and watch the best bits later when you get in. I'm doing that now as I've been out all avvy. :)

The Mint, oh no! roflmao Yeah it wasn't that great was it? Best thing about it was the score I think. I did enjoy the odd mad shot here and there though.

There's also a service on eurosport.com which not only lets you watch matches live (if you're up and available at that time), but also makes the matches you missed available to watch.

It's about 4 quid I think --- probably about the price of a pack of VHS tapes?

Of course the danger is --- if you sign up for it, you might end up wasting more of your time than you mean to ... :P
