Title: Aus Open daily awards!
MrInvisible - January 17, 2007 09:48 PM (GMT)
How's about this for an idea folks...hows about at the end of each day, people 'vote' (in the loosest sense, I want people to contribute their thoughts rather than doing a poll on this) for the following types of category?
Performance of the day:
Hero of the day:
Villain of the day:
Dunce of the day:
Masochist of the day: (I'm referring to players needlessly making things difficult for themselves in unnecessarily long matches)
Rally/shot of the day:
Quote of the day:
I'll have a go at kicking things off in a minute.
ObL!v!0N - January 17, 2007 09:53 PM (GMT)
Performance of the day: Monfils
Hero of the day: Dunno
Villain of the day: Stepanek (for all different reasons)
Dunce of the day: Safin
Masochist of the day: Safin
Rally/shot of the day: Dunno, I didn't see any matches
Quote of the day: Dunno
MrInvisible - January 17, 2007 09:56 PM (GMT)
Performance of the day: Djokovic, by looks of the score
Hero of the day: Udomchoke, for that slightly unexpected win against Ferrero, Arthurs for keeping the home crowd happy, albeit against a lesser known player.
Villain of the day: Monfils, for putting out crowd favourite and shining light of last year Baghdatis, and for 'gamesmanship' over injury time-outs.
Dunce of the day: Ferrero, by looks of score - looks like he did a choke job in 1st set against UdomCHOKE.
Masochist of the day: Safin, of course - this award was invented for him. What chance Nalbandian to win this award tomorrow? He's another slow starter, who loves winning in 5 sets.
Comeback of the day (similar to above): Hows about Stephanek, coming back from 2 sets down to beat countryman Dlouhy?
Rally/shot of the day:
Quote of the day:
SuperBRAT - January 17, 2007 11:52 PM (GMT)
Miraculous recovery from injury award: Gael Monfils roflmao
SuperBRAT - January 17, 2007 11:55 PM (GMT)
I can;t comment on much cos I only got to see the freeview digital service of Monfils and baghi and MoMo v Puotcova or whatever her name was. Djoko seems to be coasting alogn nicely, and I hope I get to see some of his matches.
Yesterday though whitewash of the day - Murray, excellent. :D
SerenaW19 - January 17, 2007 11:58 PM (GMT)

liam_valid - January 18, 2007 01:26 AM (GMT)
Performance of the day: Dementieva to get a bagel, although she served 16 DFs
Hero of the day: Udomchoke to put misery guts JC out
Villain of the day: Monfils
Dunce of the day: Safin needs to pull himself together against Roddick
Masochist of the day: Safin

Misery guts JC! roflmao
Yeah poor old Udomchoke isn't getting much of a mention for that.
MrInvisible - January 18, 2007 05:23 PM (GMT)
Apart from a couple of small-medium shocks on the womens' side, it seems a really uneventful day today, so I reckon there'd be fewer awards up for grabs...
Performance of the day: Judging purely by scorelines, how about Davydenko, who has been quietly getting on with the job with a straightforward victory - Blake also seems to be hitting form at right time. On the womens' side, Hingis looks to be in good shape.
Villain of the day: Tocic, for beating home favourite, and 24th seed Stosur.
Masochist of the day: No obvious selections. Grosjean v Rochus seemed to be an even 5 setter between two evenly matched opponents, but Hewitt and Nadal made slightly heavy work of their opponents.
Dunce of the day: Groenefeld - she lost VERY badly to Harkleroad, who hasn't really done much of note so far. Also, Mirza, touted by some on here as a good bet for 4th round/quarters.
liam_valid - January 18, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
Performance of the day: Blake. I went for a burger when it started, and he had won betime i had eaten it :o
Hero of the day: Sharapova for putting her previous performance behind her and winning easily
Villain of the day: Grosjean  Ollie is always a delight to watch
Dunce of the day: Verdasco. Would have won his match against Murray, had he kept his UE count down
Masochist of the day: Murray was playing to force errors from Verdasco, when he was getting easy chances for winners himself. He should have won much easier given Verdascos 49 UEs
Rally/shot of the day: Murray made a sliced passing shot from way behind the base line on the run
Quote of the day: 'They cant all be classics' about Murray
SuperBRAT - January 18, 2007 06:13 PM (GMT)
Shot of the day: Kohlscreiber played a fantastic backhand volley, in fact there was a stage when some of his hitting was Federeresque.
And Murray's passing shot the Liam mentioned above.
vivahate - January 18, 2007 06:22 PM (GMT)
Hero of the day: the retractable roof. first heat then rain. didn't matter on laver or vodafone. the tennis played on...
liam_valid - January 19, 2007 01:36 PM (GMT)
Performance of the day: Roddick by all accounts (i never saw the match)
Hero of the day: Serena looked down and out, then set herself on fire to give her fans a real treat
Villain of the day: Petrova  Anyone else notice when Serena gave her post match interview she asked the crowd to give Petrova a hand, and the camera switched to Petrova storming off in a huff
Dunce of the day: All the top players i saw won easily enough
Masochist of the day: see above
Rally/shot of the day: Petrova was 5-1,15-0, and served THREE aces on the bounce to win the first set. You don't often see that in the WTA
Quote of the day: I am playing with Severine, we have a special relationship' Momo
mightyjeditribble - January 19, 2007 02:05 PM (GMT)
Performance of the day: Roddick.
Hero of the day: Serena.
Villain of the day: Petrova.
Dunce of the day: Stepanek loses a two-set lead against Ferrer, getting bagelled in the third :yikes:
Masochist of the day: Djokovic losing the third set to Udomchoke.
Rally/shot of the day: Hm, tough one. There was a really good rallye between Safin and Roddick at the net, I think in the fourth; that might be it. Probably some good rallies in the Fed match as well, but didn't get to see that.
Quote of the day: 'You've got a bear.' (Federer is joined by a giant Federbear beanie babie during his on-court interview.)

Actually, thinking about it, there was a really scorching foprehand return by Safin, around the net. I think it was called out, but a challenge showed it was in. I think that one gets my vote.
MrInvisible - January 20, 2007 02:34 PM (GMT)
Performance of the day: Got to be Nadal
Hero of the day: Nalbandian and Grosjean, for giving the crowd their money's worth
Villain of the day: Gonzalez for putting out Hewitt, and Schnyder for putting out Molik
Dunce of the day: Ginepri, squandered excellent opportunities to take 2nd set.
Masochist of the day: Nalbandian, for only waking up when facing match points - great comeback though!
Rally/shot of the day: Couple of nice exchanges, with net play, etc, following Murray dropshots against Chela
Quote of the day:
liam_valid - January 20, 2007 05:14 PM (GMT)
i only watched the Murray match (and the end of the Hewitt match) so cant really comment, but i would say villain of the day was Gonzo for kicking off with umpire because he never heard an overrule on a point. He kept going on about it and making gestures, but obviously we all heard it so it was the umpires fault Gonzo wasnt listening. Quote of the day was whoever was commentating on the Murray match "when he played Verdasco, he was so far behind the baseline when returning, he had to get a taxi back up the court"
SerenaW19 - January 20, 2007 05:55 PM (GMT)
Performance of the day: Serena in parts, although perhaps Roddick overall
Hero of the day: Serena :D
Villain of the day: none really; although probably Serena for Nadia
Dunce of the day: Sain maybe
Masochist of the day: see above
Rally/shot of the day: One of Serena's return winners from behind the baseline or cross court backhand that painted the lines
Quote of the day: That Amelie one
This is for the day before which I forgot to do and I missed all play yesterday.
vivahate - January 20, 2007 06:50 PM (GMT)
clearly the shot of yesterday was nadal's on match point v. wawrinka.
ObL!v!0N - January 20, 2007 08:27 PM (GMT)
Performance of the day: Murray
Heroine of the day: Hingis
Villain of the day: Stepanek, for being in da crowd
Dunce of the day: FatJohn (Gros = Fat in French, Jean = John in French)
Masochist of the day: FatJohn
Rally/shot of the day: The one that won Nadal the match
Quote of the day: The one Hingis said about tennis being before Stepanek, thanks for finally saying that :ok:
MrInvisible - January 23, 2007 01:10 PM (GMT)
For yesterday's play...
Performance of the day: Roddick - ruthless in demolishing his countryman and close friend, Mardy Fish
Heroine of the day: Serena - she's really bringing a spark to that lower half of draw
Villain of the day: Federer, for playing sloppy, yet still beating Robredo comfortably.
Dunce of the day: BBC digital service, for providing us with only 1, less than exciting match (see Superbrat's thread)
Masochist of the day: Serena, 2 points from losing, still goes on to win, is her name on the trophy?
Rally/shot of the day: Some of Federer's backhands against Robredo - along with Nadal's volleys, Federer's backhand is really the most improved shot around at the moment
Quote of the day:
SuperBRAT - January 23, 2007 05:41 PM (GMT)

I like your choice for dunce of the day :D Masochist of the day is ME, cos I sat through that whole Fed/Rob match despite being bored rigid and Fed's performance being awful.
RafaRoastLamb - January 23, 2007 05:49 PM (GMT)
Dunce of the entire tournament - The Canadian Sports Network - for NOT showing the Nadal-Murray match at all (not even highlights) and repeating CrappyPova's match instead. It should be renamed the ice hockey/American football/basketball/baseball channel instead. Idiots!
SuperBRAT - January 25, 2007 04:35 PM (GMT)
No doubt who todays performance goes to - Federer!   He deserves best shot too, but for which one? There were so many. Great to see the genius at work, even if there wa sno match you can't watch that and say it was boring becasue Federer was just superb.

TSN is a joke
liam_valid - January 25, 2007 05:04 PM (GMT)
Sharapova is hero of the day  She started the ovation for Kim when she went off and then said some really nice things about her in her interview.
Quote of the day was Serena "Vaidisova kept saving those match points, she reminded me of me"
