Title: Is Dementieva a mental goat?
liam_valid - January 17, 2007 06:51 PM (GMT)
I watched a bit of her match last night (damned eurosport kept shoeing the mens matches  ), and i was thinking how remarkable it is that she has been consistantly around the top ten for all this time, despite the fact that she can serve 16 double faults (the equivalent of 4 breaks of serve against her :yikes: )in a single match. Now the fact that this happens has to be down to 2 things:
1. She knows how crap her serve is but has such a great mental approach that she refuses to let it ruin her game
2. The rest of her game is so amazing, she doesnt need to rely on the serve to win points
Any thoughts?

more of 2 less of 1.
if she was a mental goat, she'd do something with that serve. fix it, slow it down, try under-hand - SOMETHING!!. her serve is a disservice to the women's game.

im only asking because ive never really watched her play tbh, and i think she is a bit of an enigma, but it gives me hope because my serve is lousy too, so i might win a match one day

is is really too bad about her serve, because is does take away from the solid, fairly complete game that she has.
and btw, if she was a mental goat, she'd have a slam by now. champions find a way to win.

lol - I think Elena's forehand and movement are outstanding, but apart from that I don't think there's really anything that stands out sometimes you do wonder how she's still in top ten.
She can only go deep into a slam when she's on tip top form.
And yes she is mentally scrappy, a fighter. Not exactly the mental goat though.

Is this a trick question???
With her serve you cannot be serious to even use the words Mental GOAT in the same sentence as Elena!

I agree, especially as she made was it two or three? GS finals in one year, and got bulldozered by th elikes of Myskina (who IMO should have never won a slam). She does do really well despite that serve, but I also feel part of that is the lack of depth in the women's game. She woudl tno be top 10 if there was a stronger field.
I can't work out why she is top 10 tbh.

Having a bad serve does not equate to being weak mentally. When i play, my serve is definately the worse part of my game, but my competetive nature and refusal to give any point away is my strength. Some people just will never have a certain shot work well for them, but it is a testiment to their mental strength that they can still compete despite that :)
