Title: Jo Durie
liam_valid - January 16, 2007 07:18 PM (GMT)
When i realised she had won the Medibank International in 1983, i took a look at her profile and never realised she was so successful. A semi final appearance at RG and USO and 1/4s at wimbledon and over a million dollars in prize money :o I always like Jo but thought she was just an 80s version of Keothavong, im happy to be proved wrong. Go Jo :yahoo:

Yes, she could give many of the top players in the world a run for their money in her day.
I think that it took Martina Navratilova to beat her in the SW19 quarter final..?
And I'm sure that she won the odd slam doubles title too, something which doesn't look very likely from the current crop of UK players. :(

yeah i think she got wimby mixed with Bates, and another. I started to get into tennis around '86 so i never wirnessed her in her hey day. I love her commentating though. When she speaks, i always imagine she is smiling :) lovely lady

She wasn;t bad, and was the last British woman to win a GS title with Bates at Wimby in MD. I tell you what was bad, she made a record - it was awful and i dont; think it is very well known thankfully. :D

SB, are you sure about this? I've checked my sources (sounds mysterious) and have found nothing about this little event!
I'm intrigued if it does exist.. Will it be better than Kraftwerk's tribute to Becker, 'Boom Boom Boris', I wonder? roflmao

Seriously, I was watching TV one day with my mum and there was a video. Jo was sat on the grass playing a guitar and singing very badly. I have no idea what the song was or if it ever got released, I do recall my mum saying she should stick to tennis though. roflmao

Yes - she's the only player ever to have played Graf more than once, and have a positive H2H against her.
Admittedly her wins came when Graf was very young, and she was an experienced pro, but still....
Nick Cica - January 18, 2007 07:05 PM (GMT)
She beat Graf in 1988 (Graf's annus mirabilis) 6-1, 6-1??? I honestly don't remember that and I was a huge Steffi fan at the time.

It's a mistake in the head to head, probably wrong year.
Steffi won Miami that year in straight sets beating Chris Evert in the final :)

Graf beat Durie 6-1, 6-1 in the last 16 in Miami that year.
Durie's record (music-wise, if the term can be used) was called Wimbledon Lawns and was diabolical. Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, I can't remember a video. The song was recorded around the time she was No4 in the rankings (83/84ish?). I can remember Jo being hooked up to a lot of machines in a photoshoot, testing fitness, bp, etc. Her ranking began to drop straight afterwards. And there endeth today's bit of nostalgia from the old guy ;)

Hey thanks Roysie, i was beginning to wonder whether SB was drunk when she saw Jo singing but she right all along!!! I haven't heard from Eurosport though
liam_valid - January 25, 2007 02:14 AM (GMT)
heres some more Durie facts:
Her head to head against evert was 0-8, all of them straight sets wins (one of them in US Open semi finals)
Her head to head against Navratilova was 0-13 one of them was 1/4 finals at Australian Open, where Jo Was a set and a break up but lost in 3
She led Jausovec in the French Open semi by a set (after beating Austin in the 1/4s) but lost in 3
Mandlikova beat her at SW19 1984 in the 1/4 finals 6-1 6-4
Her highest world ranking was 5 in 1983
She won wimbledon and australian open mixed titles with bates

That just shows the difference between the way Evert & Nav dominated the game and the fact that no-one really dominates today. I think it was an even mix of their ability and the lack of decent opposition. The only real threat to Evert & Nav was Mandlikova who was mentally brittle and inconsistent. Most opponents were beaten before the first point. I did love the Evert / Nav rivalry but have to admit today's game is preferable due to there being a higher number of legitimate contenders.
Back to Jo's record - no wonder you've had no replies. Probably trying to sweep the offending object under a huge carpet in case it brings the game into disrepute roflmao
Jo Durie - lovely woman, quite a handy player - except against the top 2, competent commentator - CRAP singer!!

Nope Steffi only lost three times that year twice to Gabriela Sabatini and once to Pam Shriver in the YECs. Not at all to Jo Durie though.
