Title: Murray Off to a Flying Start!
Description: Murray beats Martin 6-0 6-0 6-1

SuperBRAT - January 16, 2007 12:29 PM (GMT)
Amazing start and exactly what I predicted so I'm well chuffed :D

Murray could not have asked for a better start than that, and apparently it equals to biggest ever whitewash at the AO in the Open Era. Well done Andy.

Tennis_Mad_Andy - January 16, 2007 12:45 PM (GMT)
Murray absolutely demolished him by the looks of it! Absolutely great win, he could go far in this tournament!

SuperBRAT - January 16, 2007 12:48 PM (GMT)
Let's hope so Andy, I am worried abotu the possibility of Verdasco in round two because as I recall him blastign winners all over the court against Nadal at Queens and he beat Nalby at Wimbers too. Mathieu is a very good player too. I dont; knwo what he's like on hard but he was great at the FO.

Pebs - January 16, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
now thats the kind of start you want!

well done to Murray  we watch with interest...

SuperBRAT - January 16, 2007 06:33 PM (GMT)
I see the Murray supporters are out in force today ;)

Well I find it funny that whenever the much maligned Murray does well, there are loads of viewers of the thread and very little congratulations. Very unsporting IMO. Maybe they dare not post as there was quite a crowd who believed Murray was a flash in the pan a year ago, and now they woudl have to eat their words. Well I like Murray and I am technically British so I will get behind my fellow Brits as always, why woudlnt; people?

Pebs - January 16, 2007 07:18 PM (GMT)
is he much maligned? not these days surely?

I am not such a fan, but certainly dont begrudge him doing well, especially as a fellow Brit. I dont do the support thing just cause of nationality as you know, but I certainly dont subscribe to the 'must slag him off' thing either.

I like his attitude on court, can see it taking him further than Henman - much as it pains me! - but you need that extra bite to take you that final step. Hes certainly no flash in the pan and I hope he does well. :)

Yes, he's got really massive forehands, maybe one of the speediest...I remember him was using it for his underarm serve...And it worked pretty well B)

Murraynator - January 16, 2007 07:24 PM (GMT)
andy showing what he is made of again well done fella he can beat anyone in any draw. :D

I'm not the biggest Murray fan in the world, but i am really impressed by this result. the boy did good :yahoo:

I never thought he was a flash in the pan, but i did think he was hideously over-hyped, which i thought could have been to his detriment. Also, I was never really a fan of his attitude (hence why he's been christened grumpy by my brother and I) but i've read a few interviews with him recently, and he does seem to be maturing somewhat and learning to control his temper a little, so i'm slowly warming to him.

I've always thought Murray was put on the defensive somewhat after the treatment the British press gave Henman, and I think that could be why he never came off very well in interviews.

....still never liked his on court behaviour much mind you

Well I've heard snide comments made Pebs, and he doesnt; seem too popular tennis or personality wise. I quite like him he's got something about him that if channeled right could be rather amazing. :) You don;t have to support every player from your country, but as we have so few I can't help but get behind them, especially when we have some real talent at last. My faves of all time aren't Brits mind, but I'm obviously a big fan of Tim cos I like the voleying and touch.

liam_valid - January 16, 2007 07:43 PM (GMT)
has anyone ever served a triple bagel in a GS match?

ObL!v!0N - January 16, 2007 07:48 PM (GMT)
wow, murray were wicked today, and he didn't even really have to do much today, just his opponent played real crap today, but hopefully the muzza can keep up da good form :D

I think it said on the BBC that the record for biggest whitewash in a slam was FO, so I am assuming that was a triple bagel - I'll have a look, I think they said Brugera?

Yep, last time it happened was in 1993 at RG; Bruguera destroyed Champion

ObL!v!0N - January 16, 2007 07:54 PM (GMT)
it said in the london newspaper that some guy beat thierry champion 6-0 6-0 6-0 in the 1993 french open

liam_valid - January 16, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
Bruguera was awesome  Is he on the seniors tour nowadays?

WOW.
Very impressive stuff my Murray!

chetanpv - January 16, 2007 08:41 PM (GMT)
I dont know how much of a fight Murray can give Nadal if they meet in the 4th round. Rafa turns every match into a slugfest and we all know how great Murray's fitness is. Andy has to close this out in 3 sets if he wants to have a chance.

I think you're underestimating Murray's fitness. He's obviously been working hard and his confidence level is at an all-time high. If he can cruise like this to the fourth round then he could easily play against Nadal and beat him and still be fresh. But then I could be delusional...

Yeah, he won. ;)

Nice practice match for him in R1 I guess.. but as has already been mentioned, rounds 2 and 3 will be increasingly tough, methinks..

Now where was I.. :coffee:

Yes it was.

Murray could have become the first person in the open era to record a triple bagel at the Australian Open, and I think only the sixth person to do it in a slam in the OE.

His fitness is definitely better. He should not be expected to be Nadal, BUT who will the pressure be on? Murray would have nothing to lose and no pressure. Anyway that's thinking too far ahead, let's see what happens next. I am worried about R2. Anyway we can't assume Rafa will be in the tournie then himself. Alledgedly he's not on form and is getting over injury, so they say. Depends how true that is as to what his chances are. If they do meet it would be an excellent experience for Andy though, win or lose. He needs to play Nadal this year, the sooner the better I think.

Whatever people think of his performance, exactly how many times does a player win by such a whitewash in a GS? Not very often, even against lesser opponents. Look at some of the scorelines even the mighty have had against players ranked much lower than them and reserve judgement I say. Even Fed would be delighted to dish out 2 bagels and a breadstick.

Alison2006 - January 17, 2007 12:24 AM (GMT)
Nice win for Murray and easy B) Someone said it's a practice match, yep a bit like Fed's next match with Bjork

Anyway well done to Andy..

BBC as usual with their pro murray bs.
Dunno why they call it an international version

liam_valid - January 18, 2007 12:55 AM (GMT)
Why is it bs? He just equalled the AO record for the biggest thrashing, it's not like he stumbled into the second round and is now playing anyone better than himself

Ace - January 18, 2007 01:00 AM (GMT)
It is.
Yea he beat a guy badly.
But an article about how he is ready to handle pressure as the top story in tennis is total bs.
Lets see him beat Nadal and then I can understand this type of article

Well he beat Fed last year, a better scalp than beating Nadal. He beat Safin straights at Kooyong and opened up his campaign here with 2 bagels and a breadstick!!! What has anyone else done thats better than that to get the headline

Ace - January 18, 2007 01:07 AM (GMT)
Yea he beat Fed......cuz Fed isnt a robot thats why.
You can't expect the dude to play so many matches and still be playing anywhere near his best.Fed was tired.

I think posting news on the best match of the day would be way more appropriate.

again, if you dont think winning a GS match 6-0 6-0 6-1 is worthy of a headline, then you tell me what is

Ace - January 18, 2007 01:14 AM (GMT)
Of course it is worthy.
Was the article about Murray's victory?

liam_valid - January 18, 2007 01:18 AM (GMT)
Its about moving on from that victory into the tournament. The BBC normally put stuff like that as the headline once play has been finished for a while. Seeing as its the British Broadcasting Corporation you can't blame them really.
