Title: Beckham headed to USA

Nick Havoc - January 11, 2007 04:57 PM (GMT)
I saw it reported that David Beckham would not being renewing his contract with Real Madrid and instead be joining the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS. Is this big news on the UK/Europe side of the pond or a yawner? I must say, the reported money he'll be getting . . .

I don't really care much for Becks anymore.
He will probably fit in well there.

It could be good if David could advertise the game there and get the people into the game at last. .....Doubt he will though.

it's pretty big as a girls only or mixed game out there. Unfortunately, for the US they would have to introduce more breaks to allow for advertising. American Football games are planned around advertising schedules...

all hail the great God of Wall Street

Beckham may be past it, but it says something about the England team, that they still need him in the team. I disagree with his dropping, Lampard is the one who needs to go

I think Beckham has made the right decision. The argument on 909 did my head in. He is more intelligent than people take him for. In my opinion he is striving for self actualisation.

He has already competed for a decade in two of the world's biggest clubs. He may not be a true GREAT of football (like Pele etc.) but he was pretty big at his zenith (halfway line goa, treblel etc.). He is far past that now but he needs another challenge. He is enterprising. What is harder than trying to generate soccer interest in America (dominated by baseball etc.). He may not succeed but he will atleast try with good intentions.

Yes the money is stupid but so is all supersportstar money and I know I would take a lucrative deal like that. He isn't saying he's completely doing it for US soccer - it is partly for the money. He has HUGE marketing ability and is a sensible business venture. He is atleast in the top 5 of world marketing figures. Even the negative debate will centre even more interest in him. He is a phenomenon.

He is one of the few true SUPERSTARS of England and IMO we should have played him on England side. He has acheived alot already.

Beckham will make more in 1 second than 1.1 billion people make in an entire day ($1) That's not a kick in the arse off 20% of the people on the planet. Or to put it another way, in the time it's taken to compose this post, Beckham will earn more than I have so far this year.

Really - how much money do you need? I can't even think of many activities where you could spend money at the same rate as he'll be "earning" it.

The fact he claims not to be doing it for the money is perhaps the most offensive thing about it. Truly the world has gone utterly and obscenely mad.

Great Post Andy1073 :ok: I fully agree with you (for once)

I think Becks will be good for MLS. It's not as if he's far past his prime - he can still move, set up shots and there's few, if any, who are better from spot kicks.
I love to see him and want a number of other Euro stars come to the US to help bolster MLS.

As for the money, the $250M over 5 years is not a guaranteed salary. The potential salary portion is "only" $10/year and even that is not all guaranteed due to the salary cap in MLS - much of it is performance-bonus based, which is typical in US sport contracts. The rest is from marketing and profit sharing, which mean a number of positive things have to happen for MLS & the LA Galaxy for him to make the max.

Just read that Real Madrid coach Capello has said that Beckham won't play for them again, so he may be heading to LA as early as April.

timmadigan - January 13, 2007 04:38 PM (GMT)
The Real coach is an idiot. His team looks lackluster and weak out there right now. They can't afford to ignore players he doesn't personally like. If this keeps up, they probably won't qualify for the Champions League next year.

OFFS...Just because Lampard didn't perform well at the WC...Barring the tournament in Germany, he has been the most consistant English player over the last 2 years. It is time we stop criticizing him, he's doing OK right now.
