Title: Could Fish make a splash??

Nick Havoc - January 11, 2007 03:09 PM (GMT)
Mardy Fish is now into the semis at Auckland. He's back into the Top 50, after being way off the radar screen at this time last year (ranked somewhere around 300  ).

What do you think his chances are for making a good showing at the AO?

Dark_Necrofear - January 11, 2007 03:13 PM (GMT)
He has been reeling himself in for some time now.But with Murphys Law ever about he could get a great result in Auckland then draw Federer or any tough seed first Round Like Gasquet at Wimbledon and then BOOF....Its all over!

Nick Havoc - January 11, 2007 03:15 PM (GMT)
True. Maybe he'll have a little luck with his draw or have a nice early upset. He seemed to have dispatched Ancic pretty routinely.

Wise_Analyst - January 11, 2007 03:18 PM (GMT)
If he gets a good draw he might slither to the 3rd / 4th round but otherwise he'll be like a Fish out of water and will probably get battered.

:2quiet:

He might do well from the back of the court, but is naturally reluctant to come anywhere near a net. :D

Maybe he'll battle from behind to win a tough match. Then we could have a healine like, Fish Comes Back Up When the Chips are Down.

Nice one, Andy.

Auckland’s a small pond, though Ancic is a pretty big fish and it’s good to see Mardy prawn again when it looked like we might be picking over the bones of his career.

But it’s all cod philosophy at this stage – we won’t know if he’s skating on thin ice or can mussel in on the serious action next week. Probably worth a squid to reach the second week…

Sorry folks!

Ljubo in the first round . . . So the draw was not too kind to him, but I could see him possibly getting past Ivan. And looking at the rest of the draw, if he did get past that first round match, a trip as far as the QF could be doable.

Dark_Necrofear - January 12, 2007 07:20 AM (GMT)
As I predicted as tough seed in his opener. It might be BOOF for him afterall!

MrInvisible - January 12, 2007 10:09 AM (GMT)
For me, Fish is definitely looking one of the most dangerous floaters out there, and looks capable of battering Ljubicic.

Seriously, this is one tough draw for Ljubicic - this 1st round match has 5 setter written all over it, and I don't see many service breaks.

Also, it is great to see Fish back - I always rated him as one of the better American players and thought it was a shame he slumped so much in form after Athens, and then was out for so long with injury.

I believe he's actually a s&v player so he's quite comfortable at the net. If you make him play at the back of the court, he starts floundering around like a fish out of water.

He is also one of only five players to have won a set off Federer at Wimbledon in the past four championships, the others being Roddick, Hewitt, Kiefer and Nadal.

Well well well...Sardine Mardy has 2 sets to 1 lead over the bald Croat!

Looks like his form is solid and seems to be returning!Ooops,he has just broken in the 4th!

My,my,my....

Dinky Jo - January 15, 2007 08:51 AM (GMT)
Ljubicic lost!!! :yikes:

Dark_Necrofear - January 15, 2007 09:03 AM (GMT)
And the sardine just BOOFED the cue ball!

Nick Havoc - January 17, 2007 07:45 PM (GMT)
A few interesting comments from Wayne Arthurs, Mardy's next opponent. (I looked for an interview of Mardy on the site, but it didn't look like they had grilled Fish. )

QUOTE
Q. You came to the net 89 times in that match.

No way (smiling).

Q. How big a part of your game is serve and volley? Is it a shame it's kind of phasing out?

It's what I do. I've serve‑volleyed the whole of my career. It is a bit of a shame that serve‑and‑volley tennis is going out of the game a little bit. That's due to the fact that the players have got faster. The returning of players has got much, much better. When I was growing up, I don't remember going out and practicing returning, whereas you see guys out on the practice court these days, they're returning all the time. They're getting their coaches to serve to them halfcourt and returning a lot. The speed of the courts also over the last five, ten years have slowed down. More balls are coming back.

Q. There's a 7% improvement in your first serve from this game to your last. What do you attribute that to?

Probably not overserving. Maybe I overserved a little bit because I knew I was a little bit sick in the first match, trying to probably go for a little bit more. I think my rhythm was a lot better today than it was in the first round. And obviously attributed to the, I don't know, 60, 70%, something like that.

Q. Mardy Fish said that you're good mates.

No, I hate the guy (laughter).

Q. Will that help or hinder you?

No, I've known Mardy for a long, long time. I played him when he first came on the tour, when he got a wildcard in Newport. I think that's the only time we played. I beat him pretty easily there, but that was a long time before he actually got any good. Yeah, I've played doubles against him. I played a lot of the tours in the U.S. where he is. Once you get on a court, it's all battle.

Q. What do you have to do well against a guy like that?

Serve well again. He's a good returner. Obviously coped with Ivan Ljubicic's serve very well. I'll think about it a bit more the next day or so. He may be watching this. I don't want to give too much away to him (smiling).

Nick Havoc - January 19, 2007 01:31 PM (GMT)
Well, Mardy's into the 4th round. Shame that it had to be the way it was, though, with Wayne Arthurs pulling out injured. I thought Fish v. Arthurs might prove to be a good match.
