mightyjeditribble - January 8, 2007 11:29 AM (GMT)
Berdych d Smeets 6-2 7-5
Ginepri d Mayer 6-3 6-2
Verdasco d Grosjean 6-4 6-4
Hernych d Seppi 6-4 6-2
Baghdatis d Gulbis 7-6 (3) 6-1
Becker d Volandri 6-3 6-2

Lee v Korolev is still going on; currently Lee 7-6(2) 6-3 Korolev.

The draw for Sydney looks exciting. Nadal has been seeded to face Berdych and then Blake, if they all fulfill their rankings. This might be a good gauge for Nadal's improvements on hardcourts over last year, and his AO chances.

Of course, he has been drawn against in-form Guccione in the first round, while Blake has been drawn against Malisse, who's on a roll. So there's a chance we might not get to see those matches.

From the other part of the draw, we might see Davy, Gasquet, or perhaps Baghdatis emerging. Plenty to look forward to imo.

Interesting results from Sydney:

Ginepri lost to Korolev and Moya beat Verdasco. More worryingly Davydenko withdrew from his match with Mathieu, which probably doesn't bode well for him. He had injury worries last week, so i'm sure playing again this week wasn't his best move. I wonder if Davydenko's heavy season last year is finally catching up with him?

perhaps.

Indeed.

Both Blake and Roddick seem to be going strongly. Who do you reckon will be American #1 at the end of the year? (Or let's say, at the USO?) And has either of them a chance to usurp Rafa's #2 spot sometime this year? (I suppose that's only conceivable if his clay-court season doesn't go as well as last year ...) How about #3?
