Garden State is awesome :ok:
Life of Brian
petalp - January 5, 2007 07:44 PM (GMT)
Nice to see LCA choices being a little less conservative!
Jim Carey.. not my cup of tea, to put it mildly.. Quite liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind though.
Haven't seen Garden State, though I hear it's good. Natalie Portman is meant to be good in it, I think..
And Smokey and the Bandit.. ah, they don't make 'em like they used to!! Makes me think of Cannonball Run and strangely enough the Dukes of Hazzard (the original TV series, not the recent remake)
Ah, Life of Brian.. "He's not the Messiah.. he's a very naughty boy!" roflmao

Have you seen the stoning scene? roflmao "He said Jehova"! roflmao
Pebs - January 5, 2007 11:09 PM (GMT)
ooo, some good choices again - not seen Garden State but seems a popular one.
Know what you mean about Smokey Petal - I have Cannonball Run on dvd and theres a def similiarity - not least having Burt in both! But Jackie Gleason gives Smokey its edge!
SerenaW19 - January 5, 2007 11:44 PM (GMT)
What can I say? Excellent choices by all. Haven't seen Smokey, though several people on here like it so it must be good :D
I would say that although Me, Myself and Irene is LOL funny, and I did enjoy it, Monty Python is also LOL funny and more clever so Im going to go with that :D
Dinky Jo - January 5, 2007 11:52 PM (GMT)
Life of Brian - what a classic. As i'm off to see the Monty Python Musical tomorrow - i'm bound to say that! garden state is a great film, although it's a slightly odd comedy - maybe off-beat comedy is the right phrase! I'm not really a big fan of Jim Carrey in his comedy form - although Truman show was great! And i'm embarrassed to admit that i've never seen Smokey
Pebs - January 6, 2007 12:05 AM (GMT)
I dont think many have Jo.
With Monty Python recently topping the top 100 comedies, it should be the run away winner...
But I like these games for the ones they throw up that I should check out - like Garden State.
I have to say, I loved Me, Myself and Irene (I voted for this one :D ) but Jim Carrey is one of those that you either love or hate so you have to be a fan to appreciate his films!
Lex - January 6, 2007 01:15 AM (GMT)
crikey! what a selection!
Must admit, there is one there that if it is ever on TV, then I shall watch it - total feel factor and can't help feeling that James Bond called a few villans from it (well 'villans...')
:D
The Dav - January 7, 2007 10:05 PM (GMT)
Vote over!
And Bliv is gone roflmao
Sorry, I shouldn't laugh :D Thanks for playing Bliv ;)
Pebs - Smokey
SB - Life Of Brian
RF - Garden State
Group B members, please PM your choices :D
Dinky Jo - January 7, 2007 10:10 PM (GMT)
poor Bliv :(
To all those who voted for Life of Brian (or are Monty Python fans in general) i would sincerely recommend going and seeing the musical SpamAlot in London if you ever get the chance. I saw it last night and i can honestly say i was crying with laughter at some points. They managed to re-create some great Monty Python moments on stage whilst offending pretty much everyone (in the nicest possible way) on the way! I only wish i could have seen the original on Broadway starring Tim Curry (i did see his last performance in London tho), David Hyde-Pierce and Hank Azaria!!!
Pebs - January 7, 2007 10:17 PM (GMT)

Bloody hell i came first in one of these things for a change! :o
Must admit I hardly watch comedy films as I find most of them drag the joke out too long and add a crap story too, I prefer my stand up or 30 min sit coms really. I chose LOB cos George said it would be a good idea (He loves it). I'm not a huge Monty Python fan, some of it is wierd but some of it is also very good and I think some of the scenes in LOB are bloody hilarious, especially the stoning. And it's contraversial and different to the usual Hollywood stuff. Must say I expected some old balck and white stuff to be chosen - Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy, Marx Bros are all great - my fave is silent actor Harold Lloyd.
If I had chosen my favourite it woudl have been Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey but nto sure if people woudl like that ... I love it, especially when they play twister with the Grim Reaper and call the devil Devil Dude! roflmao I also like that Spinal Tap movie, it's just hilarious. :D
Bad luck Bliv, I didn't think you coudl go wrong with Jim Carey - he is so funny, but I think that liek many Holywood comedies, his films can annoy you. I prefer him when he does shorter skethces, and the outakes of his films are fab. He'd be a guest i'd like to invite to a party becasue 'm sure he'd be really funny. :D
I've not seen Gardne State but must do on recommendations, and sorry Pebs but I'm not amused by Smokey but it is a classic movie :)
Russiafan - January 8, 2007 04:13 PM (GMT)
Leon, Garden State.... I think I should choose a film WITHOUT Natalie Portman in next round...just for some variety...

no probs on the Smokey front - I expected to go out - but Smokey was true to me and I love it regardless :)
Russiafan - January 8, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
:) I am indeed a fan
Garden State is hard to describe really as most plot summaries make it sound kinda dull, but I shall do my best...
Andrew Largeman (Zach Braff) shuffled through life in a lithium-induced coma until his mother's death inspired a vacation from the pills to see what might happen. A moderately successful TV actor living in Los Angeles, "Large" hasn't been home to the Garden State in nine years. But even with 3,000 miles between them, he's been unable to escape his domineering father Gideon (Ian Holm)and the silencing effect he's had on his son from afar. Stunned to find himself in his hometown after such a long absence, Large finds old acquaintances around every corner living quite unique lives as gravediggers, fast food knights and the panderers of pyramid schemes. Meanwhile, at home, he does his best to avoid a long-simmering but inevitable confrontation with his father. By a twist of fate, Large meets Sam (Natalie Portman), a girl who is everything he isn't. A blast of color, hope and quirks, Sam becomes a sidekick who refuses to ride in his sidecar. Her warmth and fearlessness give Large the courage to open his heart to the joy and pain of the infinite abyss that is life.
...I copied that from IMDB

Well I heard it was voted funniest movie of all time in some poll, but I wasn't convinced that would help because look what happened to Petalp with Wondeful Life - that movie has been at th top of loads of polls and is universally popular, and the biggest classic of the lot, but it went out. Anyway good for you choosing a film you really like. I won't be chosing any unless I've seen them and like them either. :)

James Stewart plays the lead, and it;s directed by Kapra. I must admit I have yet to see the whole thing, I saw the start once, the middle once and the end (nto necessarily in the right order :D )but it was excellent and it is highly acclaimed because it gets a message accross without being ridiculously cheesy and schmulzy like a lot of Hollywood. James Stewart's character is planning to committ suicide until things change.

Garden State is a really good film, with some really good lead actors. It's kind of a vaguely male version of a chick-flick (if that makes sense.) As in, there's the romantic story and all that kind of stuff, but it's a bit more intelligent than "boy meets girl; some obstacle put in the way of them being together; obstacle removed; they all live happily ever after."
Oh, and my male friends like it 'cos it has natalie portman in a swimming costume....
