I don't get the thread? (is it a joke?)
Do you honestly not know Brakkus?

They are Venus (left) and Serena (right) Williams. THe famous WIlliams sisters who have lotsa GS (see sig) and infamously hit the ball hard and dominated at one period.

They remain a huge force whenever they deicde to play tennis.

Because they are famous for it?

Our American cousins do have a habit which truly annoys me of using the words "infamous" and "notorious" to both mean "well known" or "famous."

On this side of the Atlantic, "notorious" means "known for some clearly negative reason" (Jack the Ripper was a "notorious" serial killer, whereas Federer has a famous forehand, rather than an infamous one.). "Infamous" means pretty much the same as "notorious" with the subtle distinction that the "negative" aspect is more vague and perhaps not so unanimously accepted.

In the end, meaning is determined by usage so I'm not going to write letters to the Times about it. But the habit of creating synonyms at the expense of concision is a shame I think.

Sorry I am English but was still unaware of this.

I think all of the WTA feel that way when Venus is on form :D roflmao

Mary doesnt exactly plop the ball over the net does she? roflmao

liam_valid - December 16, 2006 10:23 PM (GMT)
There was one shot at wimby last year, where Mary hit the ball so hard, Venus never even saw it, let alone tried to reach it, and you could see Mary holding her wrist in pain after the impact :o Mary is more 'infamous' for her dramatics rather than her forehand though :D And i still remember the days where she was nicknamed 'moonball Mary' :o

Venus did plenty to her as well, god that was such winners-galore that day :D mary had nothing to be ashamed of that day

'moonball Mary', i'm sure Conchi martinez was irate when she heard that roflmao

liam_valid - December 16, 2006 10:36 PM (GMT)
i remember she used to hit these huge moonballs when she was on the defensive, then when she built her muscles up she dropped that strategy and went for the whack and cross your fingers approach!!!

The moonball always put her in danger, because if it was too short, players like Lindsay and Graf would just thump it away. mary's game really intensified in the mid 90's though :)

liam_valid - December 16, 2006 10:42 PM (GMT)
I believe if she never had so many problems in her life, both physical and personal, she would have taken the mantel that Lindsay, then the Williams took on by bringing the game to a the new 'power' level, unfortunately, she was just too inconsistant to be remebered as anything other than a player who won a couple of slams

Sorry I am English but was still unaware of this.

And I am American and have never really known anyone to use "infamous" interchangeably with "famous." Infamous always contains that negative connotation, in my experience.

(So don't blame the Americans. :P )

Serena is ok looking but flaming heck you cant compare her to tara bank or hitting campbell. Tyra is too yummy and cambell is evil but my, the woman is HOT.
