It's a good range of movies, all are acclaimed. I haven't seen two of them though but I hear they are really good. :D

The Dav - December 12, 2006 07:07 PM (GMT)
First elimination at 9 folks :D

SuperBRAT - December 12, 2006 10:46 PM (GMT)
So who has been eliminated? If it was for Wonderful Life they were robbed as I believe that is th emost acclaimed and perrenailly popular film of them all really. And the only old classic. :( Troubel is they are all classics in their own way though aren't they? This seems harder than X -Factor.

SB, I agree..

I wonder if it might have been better to have differentiated between modern drama and a classic drama... I mean, drama is such a very broad subject.. But it's easy for me to say that in hindsight.

I don't know.. maybe even differentiate between classic drama and modern drama? Or even drama specfically from a decade? After all, most of the selections were 90s drama.

Just a few thoughts.. I still think that this game is an excellent idea, but I hadn't expected it to be more tricky than the x factor one, and wonder if a little more structure might be advisable for future rounds.. But as a said, just a few thoughts. :)

Petalp, I know what you mean. I think drama is too broad too. It's my fault that we ended up with drama as a category in a way on the movie forum, as I felt that many films did nto fit sci fi, western, horror etc so serena suggested drama. There are so many types of drama from so many decades, plus all films are dramatic to a degree. And If you look at the films above, they could all easily have their own genre. Some fit into several genres, people have called Thelma and Louise a road movie but it's more than that, and comedy - well it is funny but it's a highly serious issue it deals with both in the movie and outisde of it. Feminist also, buddy movie. As it is so groundbreaking for it's time, powerful and contraversial - and just different, calling it drama seems to fall short somewhat. I'm not sure where I would put Pulp Fiction either, it's very diffierent and hard to pigeon hole isn't it? That's why there is always a need for a strange and bizarre category I guess. Leon I though twas a gangster movie until I saw it, it's a bit different form most and mayeb a thriller, I woudl nto be certain how to categroise it exactly. Shawshank I guess is straighforward - prison drama. But if we'd been asked for those I'd have been stuck to name many, Alcatraz, Great Escape and woudl have gone for hard hittign realistic Brit flick Scum.

On how speciific categories are, I think there are pros and cons of narrowing it down or keepign ti open. In the x-factor left it totally open to people to pick songs from any era or category so maybe that made it easier (although risky when you had 2 songs form the same artist) I guess if we get too specific some of us might struggle to come up with a decent movie? It's tricky and I dont; know the answer. :)

Me too, I thought Ob would be Pulp Fiction. Have to say never got into that film, I've tried but fallen to sleep 4 times so gave up! Soem films just do that to me, no matter when I watch them.

Pebs - December 13, 2006 05:00 PM (GMT)
I was going to pick Leon but for some reason didnt - think it was used as an example so didnt do it - but did vote for it :D

I love Pulp Fiction - the stories interwoven, and soooo many great one-liners! I have said somewhere that I am a Tarantino fan so thought that might give it away.

sorry you went out Petal  I have never seen that film but hear its one to watch.

Haven't seen Pulp Fiction or Leon, but Shawshank Redemption is one of my favs, so I voted for it. It's a Wonderful Life was my second choice, though. It's a shame that one got eliminated. Thelma and Louise was OK, I though, but I wouldn't have considered it a "great" movie. Perhaps more of a chick-flick . . .

liam_valid - December 13, 2006 05:44 PM (GMT)
I hadnt seen ANY of those movies  none of them tickled my fancy. I vote T & L coz i like Susan Sarandon

Oh no. Chick flicks ae silly slightly romantic things with Sandra Bullock and the likes. T&L is groundbreaking as it is one of the first female buddy movies (they are usually confined to men) and it actualyl portrayed women rebelling and breakign the law and fighting back, which is rare. it's extremely highly acclaimed for that in the world of media study, and I think it is rare to get all that plus great script, acting direction, scenery and humour. It's also highly entertaining and the music rocks, so it has it all really. My fave movie. And a great British director Ridley Scott. Must say I'm glad that they ended up with actresses who truly gelled and were realsitic. Michelle Pfeffier (terrible choice) and Jodie Foster were the original choices and Scott said ti would not have worked so well with them in it. I also heard Goldie Hawn was considered. They got a good load fo support cast too like Keitel, Tobolowsky, Madsen and Chris MacDonald who's hilarious and of course the film launched Bradd Pitt, and they defintitely gave the ladies something to look at in that movie! roflmao I heard that Geena Davis decided nto to have a body double for the sex scene! Wonder why? roflmao roflmao roflmao

Thanks for the commiserations.. you know, I had a feeling that it probably wouldn't get through.. but Christmas is approaching and It's a Wonderful Life is the best Christmas film by a long shot!! So I thought I'd just risk it and put it forward.

Actually I am pleased that at one other person voted for it, anyway!! :yahoo:

On Monday I shall be going to my local cinema. Upon arrival, I shall be greeted with a glass of wine and a mince pie. And then I shall be treated to a big screen viewing of 'It's a Wonderful Life'. It's shown there at Christmas every year, and once again is completely sold out.. and all that, 60 years on from when it was first released. :ok:

Can't say that this will be the case for many dramas released over the years.. :)

Oh, also good to see a healthy response to the voting in the end.. it was more than x factor on average, wasn't it.. tho admittedly there are more members. Well, now that the game is up and running hopefully the interest will continue to be high, if not moreso..

Well I though tthat with i tbeign Xmas, that was a fantastic choice. I'm sure if you'd had antional poll you'd have won but I dont; think the age group on here appreciate it. Must say I've never seen teh whole thing, I do hope they show it this year so as I can see it all. I think it was top 10 in best movies of all time on something I saw. It's definitely a classic that will survive many films today. I hope you enjoy it at the cinema - it sounds liek a great night, maybe I will come along too, provided that put brandy on the mince pie! :D

Yeah the turn out is dissappointing considering all the new members isn't it? Maybe they prefer music to films. I think at least with music you can watch the vid of the whole song, whereas you cant; watch th emovie. And also peopel have heard more songs than they have seen movies, and hear them over and over again so it's less likely that people won't knwo a song (unless muscially ignorant) than not seen a film.

Oh great! roflmao

Everything I find funny is not supposed to be comedy, and all the comedy films I see that are billed as such make me yawn! roflmao In fact I cant; think of a single comedy classic except Laurel and Hardy roflmao The last film I laughed at was great but nto sure if it counts as comedy! Black comedy maybe ....

Does Titanic ount? that was hilarious! roflmao

A brilliant choice, thought it would've been more popular this time of year. Some excellent Capracorn for the holiday season. I would say, imho, that It's a Wonderful Life is the second best film up there so it's a shame it went out. Althought they are all excellent choices :D
