Title: Highest ranked young gun 2007?

MrInvisible - December 5, 2006 11:13 AM (GMT)
Discounting Nadal, who has already proven himself, which of the following players will be ranked highest at end of 2007?

Tenez - December 5, 2006 01:27 PM (GMT)
Shoot I clicked on Murray instead of Gasquet by mistake.

I have the feeling Gasquet, bar injuries, will do something big next year.

vivahate - December 5, 2006 03:32 PM (GMT)
djokovic and gasquet are both capable of something special in 07.

Dr_Sincere - December 5, 2006 06:44 PM (GMT)
Richard Gasquet will win Wimbledon and/or the US Open.

I'd like to say my main man Baghdatis, but he has big points to defend next season,Aussie finalist,Wimbledon semi, and he's 12th on the computer,so he may lose ground in the first six months.

I voted for Gasquet, because with a clean run and a little bit more experience than Murray,I think maybe he could do it.Monfils has gone walkabout, and Berdych is kind of simmering, not hot enough all the time.

Trouble with Baghdatis is that he has a lot of points to defend, and doesn't perform well on all surfaces. VERDICT: will slip a bit in rankings, but still inside top 20.

Berdych is like Safin or Gonzalez - can be virtually unplayable when on form, but is still very inconsistent. He's very talented, but the mentality isn't always right. VERDICT: May climb one or two places, due to a slightly improved consistency.

Djokovic looked v good on all surfaces this year, and picked up a couple of titles. Few points to defend early in season, and providing he avoids injury he looks a good bet for Shanghai next year. VERDICT: Will be ranked just inside top 8.

Gasquet's form was all over the place at start of the year, but he performed well from summer onwards. V few points to defend at start of year, and should surely get better luck in the Wimbledon draw. VERDICT: As long as remains injury free, will be ranked in top 5-6, and looks capable of making a slam final.

Monfils has had injury problems and inconsistency. Doesn't appear to have achieved too much since Roland Garros, and has fallen alarmingly in the rankings. However, whilst there are several flaws in his game, he does well on clay, moves exceptionally well and has a good gritty attitude. I've got a feeling he'll be one of those players on the fringes of being seeded for slams. VERDICT: Will recover in the rankings, finishing in top 20-30.

Murray has done fantastically since teaming up with Gilbert. Surely he can improve on last year's Aus Open showing. I'm not convinced with him on clay, but he seems to enjoy grass, and is fantastic on US hardcourts. I think he can improve his consistency, but there will still be some wild fluctuations in form. VERDICT: Will sneak just inside the top 10.

Others to watch:

Del Potro - long championed by Vamos Argentina (anyone remember him :) ) - the young Argentinian climbed up the rankings last year without the need of frequent wild-cards. Will still be having to play qualifiers here and there, but his ranking is continuing to climb high enough for him to secure a few direct entries. Not seen him play yet, but apparently he's v talented, but not a great mover. VERDICT: Will continue big rise up the rankings, ranked in top 50-60 by end of year, and will beat some solid claycourters (eg. Ferrer, Callieri) during the claycourt season.

Ancic - bit older than the other younger players. Mario was unlucky to miss out on Shanghai. Much improved in mental toughness, and consistency, he does well on clay as well as grass and carpet. VERDICT: Providing he remains injury free, will make the cut for Shanghai - outside chance of a Wimbledon victory.

Cilic should make some good progress, Donald Young might do a bit better than previously at ATP level. Not sure about Robin Vik, as he's has some heavy losses of late.

I predict Djokovic, seemingly the most polished of all the current youngsters on the tour. Movement is sublime, technically superb on that double-hander and just abundance of confidence in his game. Already shown how competent he is on all surfaces, ie quarter at RG and rnd 16 at Wimby. I can see him becoming a much more aggressive player next year as well, especially with his uber-accurate serve rapidly improving.

I think novak will be top 8 next year for sure :D

Very good comments here MrI.

I think he propbably won't do as well in the AO but will easily make it up eslwhere. So I think He will stay around the N. 10.

True on form he is really good. My concern is that though he can inject a pace not many can handle, he in turn cannot handle pace too well. He is good if he can be deadly if he is the first to inject the power but if someone like Fed, Djoko, Gasquet or Gonzo can handle his pace then he is the more likely to collapse as he likes/needs to take his time to trigger and shoot.

I am afraid so.

Yes I fancy him doing something great this year. Confidence, confidence...that is what it is all about and I think we have only seen the tip of the iceberg with this guy.

Not sure. A talent no doubt but wasting too much energy aroud the court which he will somehow pay with injury money.

I now can see this. It took me a while to acknowledge his talent but he has some clearly. But as discussed earlier with Brakkus, what about his moving?
