Why not? Soem Britsh films manage to capture an atmopsphere and convey a message much better than Hollywood ever could. And on lower budgets too. We can do realism much better than most and tend to get our accents right, unlike certain Hollywood actors. Remeber Robin Hood? Yeah, some Nottingham accent Kevin Costner (or Yorks as they say RH came form there) roflmao

In fact we shoudl have a top 10 worst accents in films ....

Dick Van Dyke - Cockney accent in Mary poppins

Costner - Robin Hood

and Sorry Meryl, but your Danish accent in out of Africa was just plain wierd.

SuperBRAT - December 5, 2006 03:10 PM (GMT)
The best ones are generally those that were aire don Channel 4 way back, many from the 80s.

My Beautiful Laundrette - about a young Asian guy who wants to be an entreprennuer and buys a laundarette and tarts it up OTT. While he is at it, he falls in love with a gay National Frotn memeber (the marvellous Daniel Day Lewis). Contraversial in it's time, and very funny. :D

My Left Foot- fantasitc story of Iish disabled poet Christie Brown. Hard hitting, realistic and inspritaional and Day Lewis is amazing as Christie. Cant; quite remember but someone like Brenda Blethyn is really great in it as the mother. Very moving film. :ok:

Wish You Were Here - Emily Llloyd is excellent as the cheeky rebellious girl growing up in a bleak and prim post war 50s seaside town. In some ways, a miserable movie but it really does some up the post war atmosphere and life in a quiet respectabel British seaside town. Lloyd's character sets out to shock, including gettign pregnant very young, but her irrepresable spirit shines through. I love this film :D The costumes and set are so authentic too.

Merchant Ivory films - collaboration of Ishmail Mercahnt and James Ivory. I assume these are British, if nto they certainyl have that feel. old fashioned and mostly about upper class public schoolboys who are often gay, they really are lavish and well executed. Maurice is a good one. And great actors too like Jeremy Irons.

Scandal- political drama about the hugely famous Profumo affair, centreing on high flying doctor Stephen Ward's role in all this (played to perfection by John Hurt, GREAT actor) and hsi realtionship with whislte blowing prostitute Christine Keeler. Thsi film is far form stuffy and makes the story entertaining and humourous in parts. Captures the spirit of the swinging 60s adn despite hsi misdoings you really feel for Hurt's character at the end when hsi political friends pull rank and desert him. Roland Gift of Fien Young Cannibals fame has a small role and is very cool :D

For me personally there's only one winner in this catergory.

"The Italian Job 1969"

Yes the original, not that pumped up glamorous and buff Marky wahlberg version. The song "The self preservation society",Michael Caine,Mini cars, you just can't any more British than that, well maybe throw in a jam sandwich. :D

Perhaps I'll have to try watching Trainspotting again some day. I started it one time and didn't like it. I don't remember that much, but there seemed to be a lot of drug use.

SuperBRAT - December 9, 2006 01:06 AM (GMT)
on how coudl I forget Trainspotting! Brilliant film, I love the way thos eidiots talked of censoring it, and yet they had never seen it. they claimed it promoted drugs .... yeah right! roflmao Great anti-drugs movie, done realistiically in onyl the way the Brits could do it. And great music, Born Slippy :D

Lock Stock si okay, but I'm nto mad keen on these cokney gangster films, although Snatchwas entertaining. The Long Good Fridaywith Bob Hoskins is much better than the modern more galm ones.

My favourite Brit flick is "The Third Man". Brilliant filmmaking, incredible cinematography, a great musical score, quite simply one of the best films I've ever seen. Welles' "cuckoo clock" remarks are, of course, very famous as is this one ...
"Look down there. Would you really feel any pity if one of those...dots stopped moving, forever? If I offered you 20,000 pounds for every dot that stopped, would you really, old man, tell me to keep my money, or would you...calculate how many dots you could afford to spend; free of income tax, old man, free of income tax?"

SuperBRAT - December 13, 2006 12:49 PM (GMT)
When I was a teenager they showed these two films together as a doubel bill

Quodrophenia- classic about mods with great music by the Who and Starring Phil Daniels now Kevin Wicks in Eastenders! :D ) I didin't think much to it as the age of 14, but when I saw it again I relsied that it was not supposed to eb fun but quite a meaningful commentary on youth, fittin gin, isolation, social acceptance and so on. Jilly becomes a mod and thinks it is great hagning out with cool people (Sting plays the Face), doign drugs, dancign all night and gettign into trouble and causing a reaction wherever eh goes - a break form the humdrum boring job and his nagging parents. Then the girl he wants (Leslie Ash) buggers of fwith his mate, the mod scene dies down, so he gets drugged up and goe sdown to Brighton (to 'out of my brain on the 5.15' by the Who) to recapture his glory days. His dreams are shattered when he finds the coolest dude in town, Sting, working as a bell boy and takign orders from people. Disillusioned he drives off towards the cliffs on a great looking scooter that meets a nasty end! Ray Winstome makes a performance as hsi rocker freind and Toyah is also in it.

Scum- bleak and very realsitic drama abotu borstal life. Again starring Phil Daniels who was quite the face of the time, and Ray Winstone as the Daddy! It's a horrible film, but a must see because it is so realsitic and nasty - a real eye opener for all those people who argued abotu getting tough with yout and borstal being a cop out. You have to feel sorry for the kids in there, two of which takes their own lives whilst in there becasue they cant; take any more. I tmade me very angry as those kids were ignored and not supported when they presented problems to the staff. Terrible. :( It was most contraversial becasue there is a scene of buggery from a prison officer, but that stuff wenton and stil goes on sadly. Very depressign and sad, but thought provoking and influential nonetheless. It is violent, but it is nto Hollywood gratuitous style. It's all the kind of stuff that goe son but you'd rather not see. Ray Winstone hittign someon with a load o pool balls brings tears to the eye. If you watch this, you'll feel lucky I tell you.

Both films were out in about 1979 when Sb was far too young to see them but applied loads of make up and went to the cinema! roflmao

Well to be honest I don't think I have watched a brit flick that has stood out to me.........or it could be that I watched one and didn't know it was from Britian.

The best programming out of the UK is definitely Top Gear though.

T he best British film EVER is Shaun of the Dead. Not only is it hilarious throughout, it is scary, real cleverly made, full of horror film references to keep the horror fans happy, and full of excellent performances from the cast. superb

I had this film for Christmas RT. And I love it. Absolute classic, there really is no criticism I can make of it.

And now my eyes have been opened to the wonderful film making of Carol Reed :D

The Third Man is probably my favourite film of all time. Talking of Brit films, anyone seen London to Brighton? Can recommend. And if anyone liked The 39 steps (original Hitchcock version) try and catch the 4 man cast stage version on in London - great fun!

Brassed off is like Billy Elliott, although arguably better.

There\'s a young Ewan Mcgregor, a Tara Fitzgerald who was enjoying a brief success and the great Pete Postlethwaite.

brassed off, is great film- a young Ewan Mcgregor he always looks good, don't think he's a great actor though-ok but not great.
How about 'THE LADYKILLERS' saw it for the first time on a dreary Saturday afternoon about a year ago, and absolutely loved every minute of it, uplifting and sinister- it's all about characters- Alec Guinness at his very best, and that old lady-the film hangs around her dotty performance-they don't make em like it now!

'THE OMEN' saw it when i was young, it scared the s**t out of me. Horror at it best-good verses evil, hide behind the settee as the cast get knocked off one by one. I think horror can afford insights into stuff like the human condition most film genres can't.

THE CRYING GAME never saw the punch line in that coming, it just holds you from beginning to end-sexual politics, politics and love-and death. Didn't think the main character was fantastic but he did enough to pull it off-jay something i think he was called.
